I’m still using my Oppo JLTi modded BDP-105AU blu-ray player for streaming, it’s networked and connects to my Drobo 5N music server. What cannot connect directly to the Oppo, can connect vi 4K Apple TV. It stills sounds better than most external dac’s and sounds great from directly attached Hard Drives or networked drive. My preference for critical listening is always CD or Vinyl. Thanks for your KZitem videos I always find them interesting and informative.

I own the ARIES G2.1, I bought it last year before the price increase which I feel has been a bit too substantial across the range. However, I have nothing but fantastic things to say about the streamer, and it’s app. The build is superb and I love the look, connectivity is excellent and I use wifi with no drop outs. The app is so good and I love using it everyday, it’s integration with Qobuz and Tidal is seamless. Auralic build both their hardware and software which is why everything works so well and their updates iron out any bugs quickly (only one which was a Qobuz change and impacted all streaming apps). The Aries is the way to go with this range because as you say, the ability to choose the dac is all important.

Terry - thanks so much for this review. I can truly appreciate the simplicity/hard-wired integration that we might enjoy with an “all-in-one” box - especially one that offers a UI that realistically allows leaving Roon behind. I would love to see a future review of a similar “A-series” product from Aurender as a point of comparison.

This is a solid review. I've really come to love my Altair G1. I have it set up as a music server mostly, but also listen to internet radio and from time to time use the Airplay feature. Recently, though, after listening to my SACD transport and comparing the same songs played from each, I've wondered if an upgrade to one of Auralic's more premium models would balance my experiences out more. In either case, I've found the Altair to be a phenomenal solution for all of those separately functions components. Along with the Lightning software, the Altair adds convenience not matched by many.

Thanks for this, always a pleasure, sounds like an excellent component. Nothing is even remotely close to using roon, its the easiest best most informative way to access your own and streaming service music from a fantastic interface, but it is nice to see some apps being made that at least tidy up the look and provide the basic functionality for free. No android version is a killer for many, and like many other similar apps, you wander at its continued support and development, will it be ok in a decade? Nice for this box that its also roon compliant, can you switch it on and off and control the volume in Roon like you can with an Atom I wander? Since moving to roon and a Naim Atom, weve enjoyed played and discovered more music than at any time in our liftetimes hifi journey. Since this complete shift in how I see and access music, I now realise that accessing and exploring music is as important to the journey, maybe more important, than making a component upgrade, certainly in terms of 'musical happiness per pound'. Id like to see your thoughts on Roon use, the myriad discovery options and wealth of metadata and the digital sound processing options it offers. I appreciate its not a usual Terry review, but its why I would be so interested to see it... Keep bringing us more of these great reviews, really appreciate your posts.

Though I really like analog sound and sources, I am definitely the modern audiophile who goes for convenience and the minimalist look. A good set of stand mount speakers that has the ability to disappear, a sub and a all-in one (Blue-sound) box is the optimal setup for me. I love that clean look. Streaming is the thing for me. I don’t want my room filled with separates and loads of cd’s and lp’s anymore. I don’t want to stand up and change physical disk or record, but just enjoy from my listening position for hours in row. Even I prefer the warmth of analog sound, digital is good enough for me. I will settle for the occasional Chesky kind of recordings that give kind an analog sensation even if you stream them. In these moderntimes me it is not worth it for me to have the mess of having physical media, the cost collecting it and the effort to play it.

That is exactly how I feel! I had a bluesound before and was very enjoyable. But you know, as a crazy “audiophile”, I wanted the same convinience of the bluesound with better sound. That is exactly what I found with the Auralic Altair G1. Also their Lightning ds OS is very good. (Like the blueOS)

@@miguelcabrera6101 You know Miquel, you can always get better sound, whatever you buy. There are very good all in one (only add speakers) solutions these days. Point is I don’t want all this separates anymore to fill up my space. I don’t think it makes my room look better and that is also important into a space I live. Secondly I don’t want to focus on gear that much. I want to buy something I like and use that for years to come. I want to buy a clean looking, simple solution and then focus on the music. After all that’s what being a audiophile is really about. So many audiophiles get lost in chasing gear and better sound and forget just simply enjoying music. Yeah, I follow development in the audio industry, but I won’t let them catch me into that always needing better sound addiction and just want to be satisfied with a system that sounds good to me. For me it is clear that someone that focuses on music only on a simple system has more of an audiophile character then someone who is always listening clinical to sound quality and keeps, never satisfied, chasing for better gear.

@@miguelcabrera6101 You know Miquel, you can be a true audiophile just owning a Bluetooth speaker if that is the most you can afford. It’s like with reading books. I have the Altair G1. It has some really nice features, like speaker placement compensation, which is really useful in my situation. Bugs are being fixed quickly and the ceo is communicative and helpful most of the time. I really enjoy the Altair, but the omission of atleast one digital output is slightly annoying. I really can not follow the pricing. So the Altair does everything that Aries does + has a dac and is bing sold for the same price. One has to be careful with managing power. Not all ssds work because of wimpy power supply. Also connecting external cdrom is only supported if it is powered by some other means. All issues can be worked around, but are slightly annoying. I personally haven’t used Aries and don‘t know if the power limitations exist there, but I assume, not because of the much bigger Ps. There are upgrade possibilities from Hoerwege in Germany, so maybe some fun can be had. From my perspective the only products that make sense are the Altair G1 if integrated amp or separates are used, so the volume on the dac is set to 100%. Altair G2.1 for nice active speakers. In this case both devices will handle streaming and local music and things. If roon is used Vega G1 or G2.1 accordingly. Also something to note is that the Orfeo Class A thingys are only available on the balanced outputs. Long story short. G1 is really good. G2.1 can be better, BUT in my case it’s not. I don‘t use the volume control and use unbalanced connection to my amp. So no G2.1 for me. Vega G1 uses the previous Tesla platform, so it is not a real upgrade. Vega G2.1 will force me to use roon and still is not a real big step. So the Auralic range is slightly confusing and illogical. All this being said, it is so much more usefull than Lumin and Naim Streamers that is not even funny. If they bring Altair G1 Naim edition with din …. I am getting it, if they also beef up the PS. And MQA is not supported (afaik), but who cares anywayz. Also it is normal to have some screen buzzing because of the pwm of the backlight, which is slightly annoying if the unit is used on a desk as a dac. This can also be worked around (Level1 and Level7 are silent, but to dimm or extremely bright). I can talk more on owning the Altair and how, why and what I would do differently to elevate it from really good to truly awesome. But hey … I guess nobody cares.
@PursuitPerfectSystem

Interesting comments, SSD dont draw any power so that's a strange one and I didnt notice any buzzing I had the screen set to dim 6. Needing external power for CD rom ripping makes sense as you need 12v and 5v and you can only get 5v over the USB bus but I thought if you bought an external cd rom it would have to be a self powered unit anyway. Looking at the Aries internal its dual LPSU which is different to the Altair as well. I am still learning the products for sure.

@@PursuitPerfectSystem There are discussions over in the forums about supported ssds. During initialization more power is used which causes the process to fail. So this is a official statement from Auralic. The SSDs they recommend all work, and I had no issues after consulting the forum. But if you just get a random 4Tb ssd, there are chanses its not going to work. Most external cd drives are powered by the usb port, my apple super drive also is :). Maybe I am unlucky with my screen, but it is a common quirk and even the CEO says is normal and not a problem that can be warranted. And don‘t even let me started on the network transfer speeds (5MB/s - 15MB/s), because of the wimpy arm cpu (also Info directly from Auralic). But even with all this issues the unit is very useful. More useful and user friendly and even sounds better than the competition. I habe compared the Lumin d2 and Naim nd5xs2. The Lumin App looks so out of date to me … it is not even funny.

I have a Pontus II DAC that I love. Currently streaming thru a Marantz SACD 30n Streamer/Disc-Player/Transport, which allows me to bypass the very decent Burr/Brown internal DAC with Streaming and CD data (but not SACD data 🙁), and output that data via S/pdif to my Pontus II. ..but I just pre-ordered a Mercury Streamer from Pi2Design that has super-quiet streaming and offers I2S output to my Pontus II's I2S input. It all gets so complicated, but this will be the next cost-effective improvement step for my all-digital system..

Hey Bob. I've thought of doing the exact same thing as your doing....but I own this Altair G1 and damn is it good. @@mikehuntington4440 so you prefer the sound of the Altair chip-based DAC over the R2R sound. Interesting. Our systems and preferences are all so varied I wonder how that plays into it? I love the Pontus II sound over the Burr/Brown chip DAC in my Marantz SACD 30n (which is decent), as it is more spatial, wider soundstage, more depth. My set-up delivers a LOT of bass…so I do not find that lacking in any way. I am going with the new set-up for a cleaner, quieter streaming source, plus I2S is touted as a much better way to connect my digital source to my DAC than S/PDIF…(I got a really short high-end hdmi cable), and this was not too expensive, so curiosity got me! 🙂

@@bobb.9917 Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on the depth and sound stage that the Denafrips Aries 2 had over the Auralic. It was much deeper and the DAC tended to highlight reverberation more. Very nice sound. I didn't find the bass lacking on the R2R, it just sounded a little sloppy and uncontrolled compared to the Auralic. And to be honest, I didn't notice until I got the Auralic. Same thing goes with the transparency.... As soon as you hooked up the Auralic, you'd instantly notice quieter backgrounds and more transparency. I'm sure your Pontus sounds better than than the Aries 2, but the question is how much better. For me, like I said... I'm not sure if it would be worth it, because most likely certain aspects of the sound would improve, and other ones would get worse. So it would really just be a change in sound. Know what I mean?

@@mikehuntington4440 Mike, one thing I am learning in this "sound game" is that it’s complicated. All the components enter into it. Like how black is the background from the amplifier. The streaming source and output chosen from it : USB, S/PDIF, I2S…"possibly" the cables and what I noticed yesterday, the recording. Not to mention the room and someone's personal sound preferences/listening experience. Number one…I have to stay open-minded and have fun. Priority! 🙂 I would love to experience The Altair. So yesterday I streamed Iggy Pop "Brick by Brick" Track: Candy 44/16 Chain: Marantz, data out via 75ohm co-axial cable S/DIF to Pontus II, to balanced XLR to Schiit Freya+ (in tube mode w/NOS tubes) to balanced XLR to my McIntosh MC-152, #10 copper lamp cord 🙃 to DynAudio Contour 20s. It sounded like crap. Thin…compressed…bad recording would be my take (no expert)…and I think that my chain (specifically the tubes in my Freya+ and The Pontus II), was making this poor track sound even worse by opening it up and accentuating/amplifying its faults. I switched the Freya to SS mode (no tubes), and cut the Pontus out of the equation and used the Burr/Brown chip DAC in my Marantz streamer (less revealing) and the song sounded waaaaaaaaaay better! (Based on that experience alone my tubes and Pontus suck…right? LOL!) OK… then I put on Billie Eilish, "Happier Than Ever" Track: Billie Bossa Nova. Streamed at 44/24 This track was higher rez, but the quality of the recording is heads and tails above the Iggy Pop trac. Better balanced, fuller, way less compression, deeper bass…"to me"…just an incredible recording…not the song…THE RECORDING. Although I love the essence of the song, too. I fed that to my preferred chain above with the tubes and the Pontus and it sounded waaaaaaaaaaay better than the chain with chip DAC with the tubes turned off. WAAAAAY BETTER/SUBLIME! This recording had more quality information/data for my tubes and Pontus to "reveal". The soundstage depth and width was off the charts. NO COMPARISON in the two experiences. Huge difference in sound and enjoyment. It made me want a quality recording of the Iggy Pop/Kate McPherson session to exploit with my gear. Perhaps the actual disc would sound better, but many times, alas it does not. Just bad original recording tech? Not sure. NOW…that is just my experience yesterday afternoon, and I dare say…if someone else was sitting in my seat, they may have heard/experienced something totally different, right? This pursuit is complicated and has MANY variables and nuances….and many times there is no right or wrong, just preference.

Excuse my ignorance and simplicity but if you are using Tidal connect on these streamers is the streamer receiving the music via the connected internet cable or through the air. I know you use the phone or iPad as the controller but not sure how “connect” works. I’m using Apple Music on Airplay at the moment though I can connect the iPad directly to the amp via USB for best quality but not real convenient because I’m no longer in arms reach of the iPad. I watched a few KZitem videos but can’t find one that explains this “connect” properly.

I think air play works the same as chrome cast so it means the internet signal carries the audio straight to the device and not through the phone or tablet, so yes very similar to Tidal connect which is probably why the technology exists across all the platforms

You can connect this device to your network with wi-fi or Ethernet. Either way, with Tidal Connect (or with Tidal and the other available services in Auralic's own app) the music is going from your router straight to the streamer, the iPad or phone is only a remote. This streamer, like most others, also has AirPlay and Bluetooth, but then the music is going through your iPad/phone.

@@angrygirl7083 hmm, i have streamed from an ipad/Spotify (connect) via usb into arcam irdac, not bad, but massively improved if apples usb cable was replaced with an AudioQuest forest, even more so with AQ Coffee, again with insertion of an AQ Jitterbug, which somehow kept remaining harshness in treble to acceptable levels; replacement with a real streamer bridge (Project stream box ultra s2, and suitable cables and lin power supply) again took it all to another level. Even with compressed mp3 files. But i agree: BT with at least aptX is actually not bad at all, so much so that I see a wide gap and the need for distinction between BT w/o aptX (which is okish, but never a love affair) and BT with aptX or better (which brings air and important subtleties into the music, ie all the things we came here to watch Terry‘s videos :) )

While I enjoyed the review, I didn’t enjoy the clickbaity title of this video: „Best streaming DAC?“ Because it isn‘t even within Auralics product line let alone compared to a Linn Klimax DSM f.i.; so the answer is a clear no and you know it.

Take that one on the chin it is click bait yes. Here is the truth, titles are hard to think of becuse your torn between the boring facts and wanting something interesting. After a week like I had last week ny brain capacity was low yesterday so it was a bit of a cheap play but sometimes its the best you got. Sorry no harm intended

It's appropriate you appeared on Darko's channel, since you're both a couple of first class five star prats.
