My brother has limited dexterity in his left hand as a result of being in a car accident nearly 13 years ago and shattering his elbow about 6 years ago. My first thought when I saw this feature added was that this would be awesome if he took the time to figure out new layouts that could help him have an easier way to play his games. I'd take him being able to better his enjoyment of games over folders and themes any day.

Remapping is a huge deal for accessibility, and it also eases the use of third party or custom controllers, which are also huge for accessibility. For a few people out there, these features can make the difference between being able to play and having to pass on it. PC gamers have pretty much always had these sorts of options, and while that's great, it also means PC might be the only option to people with certain needs. That means just not getting to play exclusive titles like Zelda. It's really encouraging to see Nintendo step up and show some flexibility.

Dude, that R button is my source of grief. I had my Switch since Christmas, and always took good care, but like, 3 times... 3 lame little drops of the right joy-con, and that R button was gone in 2 months. Let me tell ya: that little annoying, soldered straight on the joy-con motherboard button, gave me some experience dealing with busted board copper tracks that I thought I had... If I had designed that crap I would have put that button on a separate flex board like the left joy con has. A few "pro" tips for whoever wanna venture into replacing the button instead of the joy-con or whole board: 1 - the button is identical to the 3DS and 2DS ones (dunno the New ones, but old 2DS/3DS yes); 2 - don't flood in flux the new button when soldering it back. You'll screw the internals of it and never be able to clean it without possibly ultrasonic bath; 3 - there are 2 test points on the board that lead to the button contacts. So completely ripped off tracks on the board aren't the end of your journey, you can find about them on-line.

There is the inherit problem of the game not showing the right button prompt, so you have to remember which button is which. A great use of remapping is for the wired classic controllers from the minis using ether the 8bitdo GBros adapter or wifi dongle (plus wiimote). In Megaman Legacy Collection, rewind is L and minus is save-states and now with a limited button NES controller, rewind can be select and screenshot (on the adapter) can be save-state. Additionally, in the Mana collection, ZL is save-state and with a SNES controller, that can simply be L. If you already own these classic wired controllers and don't want to buy the online-membership only versions, this is a big win. Being someone who's had more P.C.s more often than consoles (not for a dislike of consoles, just that I didn't get my first one until I bought it myself) this makes all the sense in the world. Half of routing non-Steam games through Steam is to be able to use the Steam Input API so that you can remap controls even if the game doesn't natively support this (as well as being able to rig up some macros and such. Button remapping on the Switch with a Switch controller that supports macros could make for some really smooth control schemes (although not being able to switch stick and D-Buttons/D-Pad does kind of nerf the range of things that you can do).

The camera inside the house goes crazy but i can live with that -NES, SNES and 2D games: by using the left "d-pad" but remapping the left stick to the right, the game doesnt receive random "up" inputs from the drifty stick and i can play normally. I hope this is useful for other people

What I do for BOTW is using both joy cons and enabling de SL/SR buttons, so on my right joy con my SR is A and my SL is B (which makes a lot of sense: upper button to accept lower, button to cancel), so now I can run with the SL and jump and turn around the camera and everything else at the same freakin time. Enabling the S buttons opens so much possibilities.

For remapping controllers I find it very useful to look up a picture of the original controller you're trying to mimic.

Nobody knew we needed??? I've been crying about this since day one playing breathe of the wild. Now if only they would give us the option to swap directional buttons with joysticks and also invert joystick axis. Can you do a video on all controllers that are compatible with the button mapping feature?

Sony and Microsoft have this feature for ages, so I was really annoyed when the Switch didn't have it from the start, because it always helped me when developers insisted on a certain control scheme. I am glad that it is finally here, but there are a few things I would like them to add on top: 1. Stop telling me that my controller is using a modified control scheme. In know! It would be really nice having an option to just deactivate that message. The small icon on the bottom left should be indicator enough. 2. We have already the option to save multiple control layouts, so why can't we access them more easily over the quick menu? You know, the small menu that comes up when you hold the home button. 3. It would be really nice if we could also map buttons to the control stick and vice versa. I believe Sony is doing this already, and it would make this feature complete.

As someone with a disability it has always been an issue to play games like Mario Kart or Zelda since both use the L button to shoot items and targeting enemies, I got used to just pressing the trigger with my left knee but I often ended losing races or dying to enemies because I didn't react quickly enough. This feature allows me to remap Mario Kart like it Double Dash were you use either X or Y to throw items and targeting on Breath of the Wild to the back triggers which is way more comfortable, most people take it for granted but for people like me with disabilities this feature is a game changer.

Dont forget you can use sl and sr on the side of the joycons as a sort of paddle button. This adds four new buttons. However the top ones are a little wierd to use.

For Splatoon, I remapped: LS 👉 Y (recenter camera) RS 👉 B (Jump) L 👉 LZ (Squid) LZ 👉 RZ (for when I'm using the paintbrush) Now I never have to take my thumbs off of the sticks, unless I'm checking the map or launching to a teammate

I'd expect it to work fine with most wired controllers as they should be seen as Pro Controllers anyway. I know the 8Bitdo Wireless USB Adapter works, tested with a PS4 controller, which is seen by the Switch as a wired Pro Controller. Anyway I've been loving this feature in Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition where I've remapped a lot of controls where pretty much the only time I have to remove my thumbs off the sticks during combat is for selecting chain attack, using an art on a specific party member or pressing B. My mapping is like so - L & R -> D-Pad Left & Right LS & RS -> L & R - & Capture -> LS & RS ZL -> ZR ZR - > A A -> ZL Not sure how I will use the feature in other games yet aside from Mario Maker where I plan to put X/Y on one of the shoulder buttons, possibly R.

The biggest plus about this was for players who switch between the Switch and the xbox/ps4. Literally, the handiest configuration is swapping the a/b and x/y buttons. Especially when you use the Mayflash adapter, using an Xbox controller, it doesn't look so wacky.

PSA: there is no need to button mash while crafting in AC. Two presses of the A button activates fast crafting. It tells you so in the game at some points as a tip. Pressing A twice after you start crafting is exactly the same as mashing the whole time.

I use button remapping in Mario World on SNES, it has a weird controller scheme. Now it’s just like the other SMB games, in which B is run and A is jump.

Weird, I found the SMW scheme a million times more comfortable than B to run and A to jump. Only problem is the spin jump. Maybe it's because I played a lot of Mario World growing up

@@stevenmartinez2530 Super Mario World really is the odd one out. Every 2D Mario game to come since has XY/AB switching options, and the games before it only had A and B buttons. So SMW is the only game that forces that button layout on the players.

This could be useful for certain challenge runs that ban certain inputs! …Granted, since A and B have to be mapped, challenges which restrict those buttons wouldn’t be affected, but still.

My favorite remapping has been for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe where I made it control like most racing games do instead of being forced to play it like it's still Super Mario Kart. I changed the A for acceleration to ZR , change drifting (which was ZR) to ZL and moved item usage (ZL) to Y, since it's pretty accesible and it's kind of a common button for shooting in some games. I gotta say, muscle memory screwed me a couple times as I was adapting to the change in my first tries but now it feels amazing to play Mario Kart like this. Also, menus are just as accesible as ever since A and B aren't changed.
