For me texture is also a big deal. I did have problem with carrots for all my life but I've also always known that it depends on how it's cooked. I don't like them raw or cooked on their own but I like them grated and fried with other veggies or as a salad with lemon juice. And that's what I remind myself to whenever I think I don't like something. Food can change so much during processing so it seems quite close-minded to not try something over and over again. Also I envy you Danes, if I buy like meat (which is my favourite) it always comes in plastic...

When I switched to plant-based eating (~6 months ago), it was a TOTAL ADVENTURE in recipe browsing, grocery shopping, and cooking. I had renewed enthusiasm for food... there were absolutely no barriers or food aversions at all... and my partner loves all the new food and the interesting flavours... maybe I am just lucky? I live in the Canadian wilderness where fishing, hunting, and ranching are very established practices... there are no Vegan restaurants or specialty stores near me (200km round trip to real stores), so I just made veganism happen in my kitchen on my own. It’s all about being open-minded and thinking positively. PS - I am not fond of wholewheat pasta either... the texture is quite dense compared to regular pasta. Great video, love the encouragement! Thank-you Gittemary and have a Merry Christmas.

Is "plant based" the same as being vegan?
@marycharlebois6627
4 жыл бұрын
@@f.1055 Sorry about that... I tossed around the terms “plant based” and “vegan” in my comment above but (in my limited knowledge) they do have different meanings. “Plant-based” refers to eating foods that do not contain any animal products in them, this term refers to one’s food intake/dietary choices. The term “vegan” refers to a lifestyle decision to avoid the use of, and the consumption of animal products in every facet of life. A vegan would therefore avoid things such as wool, leather, silk, honey, etc because these items, as well as products made from these items come from animals. I’ve just entered into this world 6 months ago and am a relative newb here. That being said, there may be more experienced vegans out there who could contribute more info here on this topic.
@Gittemary

I could definitely do a better job as using the these terms correctly lol. Yeah “plantbased” only referes to food, while “vegan” referes to all avoidance of animal products and exploitation eg buying wool or leather. I do however use second hand/thrifted leather and wool to avoid waste ✌🏼🌿 Hope it clears it up a little bit

I am currently vegetarian. Going into this, I didn't really like beans or tofu that much. I have been gradually incorporating them into my meals and now I don't think they are so bad. The mock meats have helped a lot espeically the morning star chickn nuggets and the boca "beef" crumbles. I think as I get more comfrotable with this things I can be more plant based.

Great tips as usual! Love your videos! I am curious about your opinion on the sustainability of fishing on the individual level (not the fishing industry)? For example, I live in Wisconsin in the US and my dad and I love to go fishing. We take his canoe (non-motor vehicle), follow the quota guidance from the DNR, and my dad cleans the fish himself, which can sometimes provide us 2 or even 3 full meals (without any plastic packaging!). I totally under that the fishing industry has numerous environmental and sustainability issues, but I can’t help but think that fishing on the individual level isn’t so bad. As long as you follow the quota guidance, don’t use a motor vehicle on the water, and are generally mindful of the lake environment. I also understand that many people chose to be vegan for ethical reasons. My question is purely regarding the environmental aspect. Would be interested to hear others’ thoughts.

This was surprisingly inspirational. I'm not vegan, but I have lactose intolerance so I do use a lot of plant based milks and stuff like that and try to eat a lot of vegetarian meals (I guess that only leaves eggs??). However, I'm also a very picky eater and I found that that is generally regarded as "me just being difficult" since I'm no longer a child. My goal for 2020 however is to try to learn how to eat mushrooms, and this video felt like an extra boost to do just that :)

Would like to be a vegetarian BUT I am allergic to soy products and as a diabetic, pastas, taters, and other high carb pastas and veggies are no-gos for me. @@Gittemary I can have a VERY small amount of beans like 2-3 Tablespoons per meal. I normally put a whole can of butter beans into my white chicken chili or hamburger soup. Which is another reason I want to find the Beyond Meat Ground meat so I can try the hamburger soup with that instead of beef.

Luckily, we don't have to be vegan from zero to hero. If you feel like you never could be one, just start by eating meat every other day, instead of every single day. That already is such a big step. Eventually, you might be able to go completely vegan. But still, it's not something you have to do in any case.

If I include a food I don't like in a dish of foods I do like, it's contaminated and I can't eat the bits I would have liked. If it happens too often, a food I did like can become a food I don't like long term. Also, I think baking is one of the weakest points in vegan food still and is hard to get right - it is way safer to try the substitues in like, cereal or tea for milks or on a vegan burger for cheeses and spreads. Vegan rice pudding is one exception, though probably doesn't count as baking.

Just kicking in my 6 months of brief experience here... I found the sweets thing to be easy. If you are already a home baker then there are just a few little substitutes (eggs, butter, etc.) that you can easily make. I bought a little “Vegan Treats” cookbook and I have not looked back... at all. And... my partner is the KIng of Snacks and he is enjoying my vegan baking and snacks a lot, so I must be doing something right.
