One way of telling which of these diets is best is to look at the health of people promoting their own diet. A few years ago when Dr. John McDougall was 67 years of age he fainted in his bedroom on the way to the bathroom. In the process he fractured two of his lower vertebrae, his hip and ended with a spiral fracture of his upper leg bone. This speaks of terrible bone health. In fact I've never heard of a spiral fracture of a leg bone unless in a motorcycle accident or falling down a long flight of stairs. You can read about this event in Dr. McDougall's own words in the May 2016 issue of his newsletter still available on his web site. This tells me that forty years of following his own low protein, starch based diet with only B12 supplemented isn't a good diet for the long term. Stay with Joel Fuhrman's approach.

The way Iook at it is Dr. Fuhrman and Dr. McDougall are both right. I believe that if u want to put on pounds as an athlete or just maintain weight, the higher starches are the way to go. If you wanna lose weight eat more nutritarian. I eat the same foods they both prescribe just vary the ratios depending on my needs.

I’ve been listening to and reading Dt Fuhrman since the 1990’s. And yes, the science does alter certain aspects of diet, as he says. He, my husband and I are all older long term vegans. We have seen young ones jump on the Vegan bandwagon totally ignoring health and science. It doesn’t matter whether or not you agree, have never seen a vegan patient come in with dementia, etc. Where is your unbiased science? Biases appeal to the industries and the desires of the masses, not the actual facts. As for fish and Omega 3’s vs algae or flax oil, and fish oil, one needs to consider the scientific risk factors of today’s polluted fish, and the rancidity of flax oil. There are some individuals that Dr Fuhrman does suggest a fish oil for Omega 3’s and brain health. It all depends on the individual needs. As he said, one size doesn’t fit all. He is a brilliant and well qualified speaker, teacher and doctor. Other whole food plant based doctors can benefit some of you also. But they will never tell you to omit the Greens, onion, mushroom, beans and legumes. They may disagree on the nuts and seeds. But, they don’t oppose each other. Only certain pompous individuals and idol worshippers make it a big issue. Why don’t these plant based doctors fight each other over the nuts and seeds? Because even Dr Fuhrman as well as others suggest a maximum amount of nuts and seeds to 1-2 ounces. They all omit the oils and animal. He is not alone in educating the masses. Look up videos of Dr Dean Ornish, Dr Esseltyn, T Colin Campbell, Dr Greger, Dr Alan Goldhammer,, Dr McDougall, Neal Barnard Michael Kalpper, Pamela Popper, Doug Lisle and many more.

Most foods are healthier and more nutritious when consumed raw. There are some exceptions, though: legumes and their derivatives, some fruits and vegetables such as artichokes and aubergines/eggplants (those are fruits), starchy tubers, cereals (unless they've been sprouted), mushrooms, and of course, seafood, fish or any other animal-derived food (except for breast milk and honey).

The problem isn't veganism. The fact is when most people stop eating meat they continue eating the way they were without the meat. So someone can be vegan and still be eating mostly bread, pasta, rice, processed foods instead of mostly veggies and different fruits. So to be a healthy Vegan one must continuously educate oneself about nutrients and add chia, flaxseed, plantbased protein powders and lots of micro and phyto nutrients.

I like his "nutritarian" approach, but I do not agree that vegans are expecting everybody to fit into the same mold. I am a vegan myself. "Vegan" is just a word and also a very broad term that is used to explain a person who chooses not to consume animal products for various reasons. There are a billion different ways to eat a "vegan" diet and everybody's understanding of nutrition is different. That is not all vegans' faults that others aren't educating themselves or are just ignorant to proper nutrition. He is making it seem like all vegans are deficient and uneducated. Like I said, "vegan" is just a word and there are a billion different ways to live a vegan lifestyle. And I don't think that cutting animal products out is something to steer people away from. It has been proven over and over how animal products are detrimental to human health. I don't think that he should be steering people away from a vegan lifestyle.

Meal before dinner: 2-3 peanut butter and banana sandwiches with 4-5 clementines, French toast bagel with daiya cream cheese and some soy milk. Or sometimes I won't have the peanut butter sandwich and I'll have a hummus sandwich with spinach and tomatoes instead. It's not just WHAT we eat, but how much and when. Eating fewer calories and incorporating fasting periods is very healthful. Anyone who disputes this doesn't understand the science. Dr. Fuhrman doesn't say eat as much as you want as long as its certain foods, he also emphasizes calorie restriction. Yes, it is hard for our flesh to do that. It requires self discipline, but eventually our appetites adjust and we are much healthier for it. I've done all the plant based diets over the last 30 years-nutritarian, all raw, Mcdougall, eat-whatever-as-long-as-its-vegan, and have found that eating LESS and incorporating fasting (ie, don't eat 16 hours out of 24), periodic detoxing (enemas) and incorporating the SPIRITUAL (we have a body, mind AND spirit) is all important. When I did mcdougall's approach, THEN I was really hungry and craved animal protein after a few weeks. Not everyone does well on that!

McDougal and Fuhrman seem to agree more than disagree. The main difference is the type and amount of carbs one should eat. McDougal uses "every group of people have starch based...." Seems like Fuhrman just wants to make the carb component as nutrient dense as possible. Beans over rice. Trouble is, Fuhrmans diet lacks a solid base for regular meals. One needs to eat giant portions of GBOMBS to get a decent overall calorie level. Both guys sell things to make money so they benefit by having differences, but it seems to me that a middle ground (GBOMBS plus starches) makes the most sense.

*scott wells:* _"One needs to eat giant portions of GBOMBS to get a decent overall calorie level."_ - BS. Beans (i.e., legumes), nuts and seeds are very calorie-dense (certainly more than grains). On the other hand, Dr. Fuhrman doesn't advocate to eat ONLY those foods, but rather to eat all of them (and eat raw onions and raw greens) on a daily basis. Then, if you wish you can supplement them with other foods such as other fruits, other vegetables, tubers, or even whole grains.

You can add herbs of course, or raw coconut nectar/maple syrup/stevia to sweeten the marinade. You can add raw garlic and raw veggies like broc and they will taste cooked the following day. I also watched in a video that you can soak the onions in ice water for a few minutes (10 or so) to remove the strong flavor.

The reason that there are so many varied opinions on what an optimal diet should be is because there is much truth in them all. The simple message should be that it matters very little the ratio of macronutrients one consumes. If you are eating whole foods, you will do fine. Whether its avocados with mostly fat content, whole grains with mostly carbohydrates, beans with a higher protein content but still with plenty of carbohydrates, or fruits and vegetables which are mostly carbohydrates, the ratio does not matter. Nuts and seeds are mostly fat (over 60%) but still have a lot of protein and carbohydrates also. What matters is that these foods are packed with micronutrients which is the biggest problem for most people. They are micro because you need very little of them to allow your body to function well. Take care of the micros and the macros take care of themselves. That is why people can thrive regardless of which of these respected doctors they choose to follow. Every individual has different requirements and needs to figure out what works best for them. Just eat whole foods...nature has taken care of everything for you. They have built in defences that allow them to survive and thrive in exactly the ratios required, the hard work has already been done, all we have to do is take advantage of it and not corrupt it with excessive processing. One must realize that removing any one component from a complete whole food can alter the final product dramatically. Remove one nut or bolt from a piece of equipment and it may cease to function. It is there for a reason. Conversely, put in one additive that does not belong and you could end up with the same result. Aside from ethical/environmental/moral concerns, most people can handle a small amount of meat in their diets and, in fact, it is almost an essential requirement for their optimal health. Like everything in life, one needs to stay within both the upper and lower thresholds or negative consequences are the end result.

Rebekah Harmon you would still require several pounds of greens to equal the calories in one potato. Unless you cover the greens in oil. Not to mention 10 lbs of potatoes costs like $2, to get those calories from greens would be way more. Not to mention beans, rice, barley, corn, or oats all way cheaper than greens. Vegetables for flavor, starch for energy. Without one another both fail.

You don't have to pretend to be poor to feel good about yourself, collectivist asshole. Anyone with Internet access has the means to get nutrient-dense foods (grains or potatoes aren't among them). Westerners spend tons of money in unnecessary stuff such as beer, wine, soft drinks, deserts, clothing, footwear, oversized housing, exotic foods, restaurants, bars, holiday resorts, luxury and sports cars, dishwashers, garden lawns, swimming pools, smartphones, central heating, AC and electricity bills, etc. On the other hand, Americans spend on average lower percentage of their income in food (~6-7%) than any other population in the world.

All these experts, startch lovers, ”nutritarians”, health oriented high fat and health oriented low fat vegans alike will refer to science. There is a lot of biases at differents stages in scientific research. And a lot of cherry picking. Health is a complicated matter. What convinced me a lot is really fine results for people over a long period of time. As far as I can see both Furman, McDougal, True North and Barnard have those. And so do nutritionists that recommend plenty of healthy fats. Let’s say we are convinced that a plant strong eating style is a really good idea. And that processed foods and oils are probably not great. I personally see that people are different. And that being dogmatic in either direction is not smart. You have to tweak your diet your way. Tbh I agree with Dr Furman that some people may need some animal products. People who eat keto or even carnivore do have their science and their good results as well, actually. To which I choose to say ”ok lets see over time” plus ”I feel to be vegan actually”. And I will also see over time. Should I feel bad I will experiment. Hoping that if the ”i need salmon urgently” 😉😅should hit me one day, by then fake meat has already taken over the shelfs in my supermarket. Why not? I find Dr Furman super inspiring and I cannot believe it will hurt to check out for ourselves how much food we need and how much healthy fats make us do our best. Pushing low fat to young people may not be such a good idea. And selling the idea that starches is a nono may not either, I would say. But IS he really saying that??

I totally agree with the comments regarding finding the middle ground between Fuhrman and McDougall, as just two examples of many promoters of whole food, plant-based diets. I first got started experimenting with diet back in 1978 as a 19 year old with high cholesterol, diabetes (by the now-antiquated definition) and high blood pressure, even though I was very lean and running 5 miles a day. I cured all of it in about 2 weeks by following the vegan "reversal" version of the Pritikin Diet. It worked wonders but my triglycerides were always pushing 150 mg/dl (or higher with even the slightest amount of alcohol) and my fasting glucose was always pushing 100 mg/dl. Total cholesterol was always very low though, typically in the 110-130 mg/dl range. Then, it was McDougall in the early 80s and Ornish in 1990 and Esselstyn and Campbell after that. I even experimented with keto and paleo along the way, both of which were a metabolic disaster. But, all along, I had been devouring the research myself and constantly experimenting on myself and taking my own measurements. My body became a built-in case control study! So, after some 41 years now of experimenting on myself and reading all of the same studies that these gurus have read - and have generated themselves - I have come to the following conclusions: Whole foods, plant-based is best but super low fat and super high fat diets - of ANY kind - do not produce optimal results. I personally obtain the best measured results (from A1C to hs-CRP to APO-B to non-HDC-C to glucose to triglycerides to CHOL/HDL ratio, etc) by eating a very wide range of whole plant foods including nuts and seeds and other high fat plant foods as long as you do the high fat stuff in moderation and you don't gain weight and get fat! Now, my blood glucose and triglycerides are always below 100 mg/dl and my HDL in higher (30s-40s instead of 20s) and my non-HDL-C is lower (

Hey John! Agree with this, raw vegan 801010's the way to go in life. Do you consume raw oats or do you not eat any grains at all? Do you eat sprouts? Why/why not? Thanks!

The caloric restriction science pretty much discards the nutritarian philosophy. That is we now know that protein restriction is very important. It also means the philosophy of super nutrition is highly questionable, more is not better. By eating basic starchy staples plus basic vegetables and some fruit, you get plenty of nutrients and not too much. It meets the caloric and protein needs without going over. If you start to focus diet around beans, nuts, seeds, you can easily start getting into the fairly high protein range and hence nullify the benefits. In general you want high carb low protein low fat which is the standard formula learned from the caloric restriction studies, without the need for much calorie restriction.

In Dr. Fuhrman's latest book, "The End of Heart Disease," the average protein intake of his sample meal plans was about 60 to 75 grams of protein each day. That's not a lot. The USDA, for example, recommends that the average 150-pound man should consume about 56 grams of protein per day. However, Dr. Fuhrman's meal plans did not disclose whether these 60 to 75 protein grams were complete, meaning that all the essential amino acids were present. I think Dr. Fuhrman spends a little too much time worrying about the glycemic-index profile of foods, which would be of greater concern for patients who are overweight, diabetic, or insulin resistant. If one is concerned about the amount of starch they eat, do a blood test. If one's triglyceride level is too high, then exercise more and eat less fat, especially saturated fat, and foods that have a lot of cholesterol. Also, eat less starchy/processed food, like white bread, potatoes, white pasta, white rice, anything deep-fried, as well as food that is highly processed, such as snack foods, junk foods, deserts, and so forth. What I'm saying is common sense. The problem I have with Dr. Fuhrman's approach is that his meal plans contain about 30 percent of calories from fat. If a person has cardiovascular disease, eating this much fat, even if it's from nuts or seeds, is a problem, according to Dr. Dean Ornish and Dr. Esselstyn, two people who have dedicated their entire careers helping patients with heart disease. To effect the reversal of atherosclerosis, these two doctors, based upon their respective experience and research and not based upon ego or predetermined bias, recommend strongly that dietary fat be reduced to only ten percent of calories consumed.

Gardening is fun! The act of gardening is the healthiest part of growing your own food or plants or flowers! I was a care giver for twenty years and all the healthy people I have met over eighty years old, who could still get up and down from the floor easy and were on very little or no medication were all gardeners. So learn how to garden and keep doing it! Even if is just flowers and not food!

Detoxing & Maintaining Are Two Phases That I Believe Need To Be Balanced & Fats & Proteins Do Have A Place. A Key Factor I Wish Was Mentioned Is The State of Most Men & Women & Mucoid Plaque. We Really Need To Clear The GI Tract To Create Optimal Digestion, Absorption, Utilization & Elimination Before We Can Talk About Deficiencies :) Just My humble Two Cents.

Wow John You are so epic tackling all these subjects so widely turned to a blind eye in the fruitarian community... Would love to see more talk about teeth issues as those seem wiiiidely spread out on a fruit diet(if not a raw diet even)... Would love to see more talk about potentials of nutrients like K2 and fat soluble vitamins that seems to be crucial for dental health, and for many does not seem to be adequate on a vegan regimen, maybe because of conversion rates or whatever....

There are some great points in this video. I get along with any one who loves to garden! It would be interesting to hear his opinion on the acidifying nature of proteins (which he seems to endorse) So if his recommended foods (seeds, nuts and beans high in protein) are infact protective, I would like to hear his success stories with patients and not just referring to "overwhelming evidence"... evidence or studies can be contrived or incomplete depending on a multitude of factors. Are there any real case studies of reversing diseases and cancer to exemplify the protective aspects of this diet?

Thanks for this video. What's interesting to me is that doctors have always said diet and exercise diet and exercise diet and exercise and it's extremely true but it's all in the details for each individual's biome and genetics are so different that each individual requires specific types of nutrient and exercise regimens. I see where the title of this video makes sense but truly I didn't hear any mentioning of starches and for me I've found starches to be quite detrimental especially potatoes.where they literally make my intestines explode. I wish everyone lives long and prosperous lives and find the proper diet that helps them achieve it. Again thank you for this video it sounds like it's coming from the 💓 and backed up with adequate research and study.

Do Dr. Gregger and Dr. Fuhrman disagree on anything significant? I would really like to know this
@DavidJohnson-qs9mk

Not as far as I can tell. Note that Fuhrman now says fat should be between a minimum of 15% of calories and a max of 30% (from nuts/seeds, avocados, none from oil), depending on one's BMI and level of activity. In fact, he opts for more calories from nuts/seeds and somewhat less from starchy carbs. I am not sure Greger would agree on either the minimum or maximum, but it's not clear that's signficiant either. McDougall and Campbell, of course, would disagree with this recommendation on fat intake.

potatoes are night shade that contain "LECTINS" ,Rice also contain lectins and spike your blood sugar .If you have a hard time losing weight stay away from potatoes and white rice ..eat a lectin free diet and stay away from tropical fruit ,wheat ,bread that spike your insulin high . If you have good pancreas that process sugar 100% and you're slim then you are one of the few that you can eat all the shit that spikes up your insulin . About fish oils ? fish oils and salmon fish are polyunsaturated toxic fats . All fish becomes unhealthy after two hours being caught .And Fish oils become "RANCID" and toxic after being steamed out of the fish , by the time the fish oils are processed and put in capsules and shipped to a warehouse the fish oil is sickly rancid and toxic for the human body to consumed ! don't take anything made in a bottle or can . All toxic and made to make ""billions of dollars"" for the vitamin supplement companies . Every one wants instant gratification in a bottle ! Don't be lazy eat healthy real organic food . plant a garden .

Hepatia yes that's my take on it too. Plant based means that you eat a vegan diet, but it ends there. It's just a diet. Veganism however is NOT just a diet. It's a lifestyle choice that includes a refusal to use animal derived 'products' in all walks of life as far as is practically possible. Clothing, make up, cleaning products, toiletries etc.
