The Panasonic 3MOS range of camcorders are the best for filming sports. Full 1080p at 60fps. Extremely good in low light conditions and crisp colors because of the 3MOS chip sensor configuration. Models HDC-SDT750, HDC-TM900K, HC-X920. Getting harder to find as they are discontinued and in high demand. Only camcorders by any manufacturer available with three sensor chips. If you want three sensors you normally have to purchase larger camera at minimum cost of $3000. These sold for around $1000 and you can now find them used for between $500-$700. All three models are mostly identical internally and shoot the exact same quality of footage. I own both the HDC-SDT750 & HDC-TM900K. Most of the training footage on my channel was filmed with one of these two cameras. If you can find one, you won't be disappointed.

The ONLY issue I see with those Panasonic’s is not image quality BUT image stabilization….if those camcorders came with like an equivalent to Sony’s BOSS stabilization system then I would have bought a Panasonic camcorder BUT the Sony FDR-AX53 was the east choice for me because all my Dragracing videos require me to shoot handheld & not on a tripod.

What percentage of full speed do you usually use if you’re going for a slow-mo effect from a 60fps camera?
@BeyondTheGame_E
5 жыл бұрын
If you’re filming in 60fps, your editing sequence or timeline should be in 30fps (NTSC standard). That way you can slow your footage down by 50% and not lose any quality. If you film in 120fps then you can slow it down to 25%, and so on.

I record a lot of kids sports and looking for a recommendation for a camcorder in the $1k to $5k range. I currently shoot with a Canon M50 with different lenses and it does a great job. We also use it to vlog, so it's a great multi-purpose camera. However, I need something with a faster and smoother zoom that doesn't require changing lenses during the game. I would mainly use the camera for outdoor sports. Someone mentioned the Canon XF405, just looking for other options. Would love to see a video about sports cameras for intermediate videographers. I just looked it up and it says that the zoom is digital. So I wouldn't recommend it if you plan to zoom a lot to get good close up shots. A digital zoom is the equivalent of scaling up your footage in post. The more you zoom, the more image quality you lose.
@BeyondTheGame_E
3 жыл бұрын
@ No worries man, I'm happy to help. I don't know anything about the cricket online platform you mentioned but I can tell you this. Anyone who says that you can leave a camera on a tripod for an entire game, send them footage and they will do all the zooms and slowmos and everything else is lying to you. They can edit your video but it will look horrendous if it wasn't filmed with the edit in mind. Also, optical zoom is ALWAYS better than digital zoom. Optical zoom is a lens and digital zoom is an effect. That being said, many camcorders have a great optical zooms, so a camcorder could still be your best option. But at the end of the day, if you want a great result, someone is going to have to be on that camera the entire game using it to get the best footage possible at all times. Otherwise everything you do after that won't make up for the lack of good footage.

It’s all about using the right lens. This is why typically people who record entire games do it with a camcorder. Zooming is much easier and smoother. With a DSLR you entirely rely on the smoothness of the zoom ring on your lens. Typically the cheaper lens won’t have the smoothest rings but some do. I tried a Tamron 16-300mm that was quite smooth and affordable.

If the park or stadium has proper lights, a camcorder will be fine. The only inconvenient when filming night games will be if you try to film crowd in the stands or people on the sidelines. One MAJOR downside with a camcorder when recording soccer is the position of the screen. For some reason it's always a good portion up the body of the camera near the front. What if you're close to the field (you usually will be) and have to aim directly right or left? That makes it a total b-word to see the screen.

@BeyondTheGame_E
2 жыл бұрын
Yes you're right, every time you play with the zoom of your lens on a gimbal, the gimbal will get unbalanced. This is why gimbals are great to film the crowd from up close with a prime lens (no zoom) or the pre-game stuff but not so much to film actual game action. You should get a monopod or tripod for that if you want more stability.

@BeyondTheGame_E

It really depends on your budget. But keep in mind that with cricket you'll need to be able to zoom quite far if you are filming from the boundaries. So if you want to use a mirrorless or DSLR camera, you'll need to buy a telephoto lens as well.

Can anyone help me out quick? I dont know if Beyond the Game TV will see this - first off great video! .... I was kind of hoping you would mention some specific under $1000 recommended cameras but unfortunately not. I am currently filming my sons youth football with a Nikon D3200 that is a few years old. It does fine, but I have to manually focus the entire game as the auto focus is just terrible and when it does work and follow the play properly - ALL I hear when editing footage is the camera trying to focus every 3 seconds - it's very frustrating. So I have been researching to upgrade. I was originally going to go with another Nikon so my lens' remain useable - but after a lot of reading - I'm seeing multiple reports that Nikon is not the best choice for AF during video. Do you have a camera under $1000 you would recommend? I am not a beginner with SLRS but no where near professional (obviously based off my current camera lol). But I am very indecisive and I can't decide if I absolutely NEED 4k, if I want to try one of the few mirrorless cameras under 1k. I have been going back and forth between the Canon M50, Canon Rebel T7i and Rebel SL3 but I just am having trouble picking. This is our 5th year filming the video for the games, we make little highlight reels of each game and then at the end of the season provide each player with a disk of their highlights for the season - but I would really like to upgrade and improve from the focus sound my Nikon makes. Thank you for your time

Hi Briana, thanks for reaching out. First of all, you are right in saying that Nikon don't have a great reputation when it comes to auto-focus. So if you go the Canon route, I hear great things about the M50 as an entry level camera. The Sony A6400 could also be a great solution for you. It just depends on your expectations really... Personally I don't think that anyone needs 4K unless they are producing TV content. I have a camera that does great 1080p high-quality footage and that's much better than low-quality 4K even if I stretch my footage to 4K size. By the way, you should go to our Facebook group and ask the question there. Lots of members are in a similar situation and would probably be able to help you more than I can.

Hey E I see that you are using a Canon EOS C???, those cameras are a bit out of my budget range but I am looking for a close alternative. I was wondering what full sensor mirrorless camera you would recommend from the $2000-$3000 range that will produce cinematic film like you produce from the Cannon EOS C.... I shoot footage for Pickleball, which is like Mini Tennis.. Been looking at the Panasonic Lumix S1, Sony A7Riii, and waiting on the newly announced Canon Eos R6.... Love to hear your thoughts, Thanks!

Hey Kyle, I use a C100 MkII but unfortunately it’s not a full frame sensor. I’ve never really used them myself but the Panasonic GH4 & GH5 as well as the Sony A7S & A7R series seem the way to go when it comes to cinematic mirrorless cameras. As you mentioned, Canon supposedly have great new mirrorless cameras coming out soon but no one knows when and with accessories will probably be outside your price range.

@@BeyondTheGame_E E do you believe the C100 still holds good value in shooting sports considering it does not have 4k and and only shoots up to 1080p 60fps? Do you shoot with other cameras for 120fps for slow motion? I have been considering the C100 mkii... Thanks!

Kyle Selinko it depends what your end goal is. For me, the work I do for clients ends up on Jumbotrons, HD/SD screens and on their websites. Either way, it’s never 4K. So I don’t have any demand for 4K footage other than my own aspirations of filming in better quality. Same goes for 120fps. Would I like to have it? Yes. Would my clients notice or care? Not at all. So yes I do have a GoPro that can technically do 4K and 120fps, even though the quality is much worst than my C100, but I rarely use it. I try to only buy equipment that will help me with my client work. When it comes to my own KZitem content, I just work with what I got.

gruv3n f2 is definitely good. The 135mm length could be good enough for close ups if you’re close to the action but probably not if you’re at the top/back of the stands. In saying that, it all depends on what you’re trying to accomplish. If you want to film the whole game and not miss a thing while still getting a variety of wide and close shots, you’re better to use a zoom lens.

Great videos! I just subscribed. I want to film my son's basketball games and started to research what camera to buy. That is how I found your channel. From what I gathered in your other videos, a DSLR is my best choice. Seeing that that is the type of camera that would be best under low light and also after watching your video on the best lens to get, what would be your recommended "starter pack" DSLR camera on a budget? Let's say under U$400 (both for camera and lens). AM I asking to much for such a low budget?. Thanks in advance
@BeyondTheGame_E
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mauricio, I think you could find a decent starter pack under $400 if there’s a sale on but it will come with limitations. Your lens will probably not have a great zoom range and the camera will most likely not be that great in low light conditions. But if you know what specs to look for, who knows, you might find one that works! Good luck
