I think this is a bad way to formulate a question. 1) It highly depends on how you USE an engine. All of them have features of great visual fidelity, but the art is in composing them together. 2) Performance. You can have beautiful games that don't run very smoothly because of poor optimization. 3) Memory usage. Yeah Nanite may look very good, but memory usage is quite high - too high for average consumer platforms. Plus, the part where you show "dynamic area lights" for CryEngine - that technology has been mainstream since 2016, so that's barely news. Also, the area lights cast no shadows. There's also the factor that certain engines have been customized/built for certain types of games. For instance, EA's Frostbite is apparently very bad for developing RPG games, while it excels at other things.

Basically, all these engines produce very good looking content. The question remains: how does it run? Is it stable? Flexible? How well does it scale? Also, adaptibility for smaller developers largely depends on support. I tried my hand at UE5 and that engine has great potential for someone willing to invest enough time to actually make something great (in contrast to my small hobby attempts ;) ); it also has a huge amount of resources for anyone seeking help in any aspect. Cryengine's SVOGI software ray tracing is 10x lighter to run than UE5 lumen, it even works on nintendo switch(although with very small number of rays), and looks just as good, it also does per-pixel reflections/self-reflections and even reflections of reflections(lumen can't do that)...

CryEngine5 > UE5 > Decima > Frostbite CryEngine is the king of rendering. They had SVOGI years before UE5's equivalent Lumen. And nobody can touch their outdoor scenes with a 10ft pole. UE5 is a big step up from the plastic-y looking UE4 though. I don't know much about Decima but it looks nice here, not CE5 or UE5 nice, but better than Frostbite. Frostbite has aged, it's not bad looking by any means, but it's not the graphical powerhouse of the FPS world it once was. I would even say that the MW2 engine (which is still based on the RTCW/Quake3 engine at its core mind you, because John Carmack is a genius and some of his code from 1999 is essentially impossible to improve) has basically caught up with Frostbite at this point.

You can say that Epic did a great marketing job. So many people praising the engine and tech demos that don't translate to any actual videogame, without having the slightest idea that there are many other tools that can give similar results. The biggest advantage of Unreal is not its visuals, but that studios can take a ready-to-use tool and not waste so many years and tens (or hundreds) of millions creating their own tools from scratch. But that doesnt mean that there are no companies that want to or have already made that investment of resources. And who have achieved equally spectacular results, or even better.

Rage and Unreal are the top ones but there is one in particular that has been hidden and apparently the genre has not exploited it well. If I'm talking about Forza Tech Engine, you can't give an opinion now until the first Fable gameplay comes out and see what happens. It performs so well in another genre more loved by the gaming community, but if it looks as realistic as in the small portions of gameplay like the one in which a fireball is thrown, I can say that it will surpass Unreal and Rage, but well, those We will leave conclusions for when something else is shown.

i think all engines can be the best or worst depending on how you as dev using it. it is also a matter of genre, the time theme in what your game plays and also audio(sfx), seeing cool stuff is one thing, hearing it is another level of experience, your game is literally nothing without a good sfx design. as example, would you say a rocket launcher is cool without a impactful sound on launch and impact area? i think its great, both vfx and sfx need to meet each other on a perfect thin line to give the user the best experience with the product. another example is...music, simple background music enhances the gameplay of games alot more than just the vfx. as big example dmc games. this games without music are literally nothing.

There is no "best" engine. Most consumers only judge the visuals on the surface. A lot of devs have a complete different view on what makes a game engine good or "best". Just because consumers drool over some visuals does not make an engine great or "best".

That's not how you compare engines, you can make good looking demos with almost any engines. And if you are an Indy dev you are probably not going to make the equivalent of Frostbite games... What matters is the engine's out of the box technical abilities and tools. The coherence and flexibility of those tools. The community and documentation. How familiar you are with the engine and it's language(s). The price to use the engine (and royalties later). The platform(s) you want to develop your app for. Your project's needs.

@Danial Hamza u clearly dont know how important an engine is. Sure u can do everything on every single engine. But the automation on unreal makes it way bettere for devs. what would take months of light building and lod handling would be done instantly with lumen and nanite. Graphics do matter, and the components like story u mentioned weren't even related to game engines which is stupid as hell. Also the AI is one of the better ones around in plague tale requim

Most notably would be operation harshdoorstop made by the youtuber bluedrake. @Danial Hamza also mate witcher 4 whose predecessor was the best game of the last decade by far has shifted to unreal. That's enough to show unreal is good enough. Even ubisoft used to use unreal but stopped cause they didn't want to pay licensing fees. Ubisoft ceo explicitly mentioned that. There's also a reason why the best graphically looking android games are built on unreal. Pubg mobile , cod mobile, genshin impact, warzone mobile, mortal Kombat, Apex mobile and so many more. U clearly have no experience in game dev and just blabbering bullshit

One thing I wanted to add separately in addition to my other comment is remember, we are talking about next gen stuff here. People that complain about optimization don't really see the bigger picture. Do people bitch that their PS3 can't play newer PS5 games? I remember a time when I couldn't play Team Fortress 2 with my graphics card...but I didn't bitch at Valve for making Source an engine that doesn't optimize *enough* for me. I had to upgrade, and yes, it was time. These types of KZitem videos are showing off bleeding edge graphics and tech. It should be *expected* your PC should be relatively new. Unreal has dozens of optimization tools. It's up to the devs, not the engine at this point. If you're frame rate sucks on these bleeding edge super high fidelity games, do what all of us have done for decades, upgrade! Duh. ;)

No other engine has had any recent updates that even remotely compare to unreal. So it's sort of an unfair war at this point between engines. Unreal is the dominant AAA quality 3D game engine. It has everything you need to make games and plenty more. Unity is the best for 2D/Mobile games and small team projects like indie games. If you're already a good programmer it's just fast and easy to do it on Unity vs visual scripting. I have a teacher who worked with Frostbite and has nothing but terrible things to say about it. I think the same applies to any engine EA has made. I feel partial to CryEngine because they have a good level editor tool, and overall I think the engine still has great potential. However CryEngine needs an update to really compete with Unreal and more training videos online. The only two engines you'll see in most schools are Unity and Unreal. They're free, they have plenty of use in the industry, have tons of free tutorials online and overall prepare people for any proprietary engine you might see in the future. I wouldn't use anything else besides them unless you're experienced and want to try something different or there's a tool you want to use in another engine.

I agree with you. You have unity, unreal and the rest of them. unreal is fully featured game engine but it is resource intensive. Unity is more light weight and better suited for general 3D stuff like visualisation, medical simulation, mobile, AR, VR, etc. I would not bother learning any other engine aside Unity or Unreal.

The thing is, games do not have to look super realistic to look amazing. For that, just look out the window. Some games would need to have a very good game design to make it interesting for me to play. If it is made as a real-world simulator for hunting games, exploration, war re-enactments, or flight simulators, it would be amazing. It will get to the point where they can't look any more real. I prefer good game art, each with its unique style to create the right mood to capture my attention. Even if there is some fantasy element in the UE5 game , they will all just look the same and become utterly boring.

I'm telling you. Ya'll are sleeping on REngine. We haven't seen any of these UE5 full games as of yet which I would say, tech wise will be better. Capcom has quietly developed a monster (Pun intended) with their REngine. It can seamlessly do both 1st & 3rd person @higher framerates + high resolutions, and if you played RE7 in VR. Yeah, it does that as well. REmake2, REmake3, RE7, RE8 were all gorgeous games to look at that ran great. I never had any crashes or major bugs going thru all these games. If you have a Series X, PS5, or PC. I'm betting this REmake4 is gonna be sick. Capcom knows the significance of this game. I don't see them screwing it up. If you haven't played any of those games I mentioned that are already out and have either of the new consoles/PC, go play them now. We're also getting DLC for RE8 on the 28th of this month. New modes and a new campaign. They're also including a 3rd person mode for the entire original campaign. For me, FP was better but I understand long time fans prefer 3rd. I get it and please don't beat me up about it but there was no way I was missing that game because of it. Great scary shooter to play it that way. Fun and challenging. Take a look at the this REngine. I'm telling you, it's the best engine out right now imo until we start getting some UE5 full games.

Even for single player games, for now we are getting many cross-gen titles, so those engines aren't being used at it's full potential. @@-_wanderer That wasn't a problem back in the day. Remember year 2007, the first Crysis? It was a game that could be played only on the highest-end PCs at any decent FPS. It brought unseen-before graphics quality so it motivated people to buy new hardware. Today? Everything must run on dirt-cheap consoles or it won't sell. No wonder developers aren't spending their money on more advanced techniques. Consoles put a cage on game capabilities and "gamers" applaud the approach.
