Not enough of a difference to justify the price difference in my opinion though. I did think the Rode sounded a LITTLE better, but it wasn't by much. Hi Ren. I totally agree, the Rode sounds great, but you can't beat the Boya for price. If you shop about you can find some amazing prices on the Boya. Although I've never used TomTop before, they seem to have the best price on the Boya, when I last checked it was less than £20 for us lot in the UK and is probably the cheapest in all other currencies, heres a link geni.us/BoyaBYMM1 Cheers, Dave.

Great test, I found the difference quite noticeable on headphones. The Boya had much more background rumble/noise and lacked high end. The Rode was much clearer highs, it lacked a bit in the low end and was a bit bright but I think clarity is more important. Edit: I ended up going for the Boya, the Rode is clearer for voice only but I also wanted to record live music and the Rode filters out all the bass.

Hi. Yes, using headphones makes it easier to hear the difference that may miss on small speakers etc. I totally agree with your description, I prefer to the brighter sound as it helps with dialogue. Thank you for the comment. Cheers, Dave.

@DavidHarry

Hi. Glad you like the video. Depending on what you plug any mic into, camcorder, phone, external recorder etc. The thing that will mostly make the difference so as to hear the characteristics of different mics, is the quality of the input of the device you're plugging the mic into. A mic input has to preamp, gain, maybe send power and usually has an analogue to digital converter. Depending on the quality of these components, you will get better or worse sound. Also, many devices such as phones, will use compression to manage the level of the signal coming in from a mic, this can also have a negative effect on the mic and voice being recorded. With so many variations, it can sometimes appear that there's not much difference between different mics on certain recording devices, as they level out the sound of anything coming in. This is why sometimes, people may use higher quality microphone recording components, so that they can capture better audio quality. Out of interest, did you hear much of a difference between the two mics in this test? I'm working on a video at the moment that modifies a cheap hand held microphone body so that you can put a Rode or Boya in it so you can go hand held with them. I'm also doing a video that replaces the mic capsule/element of the Boya with a better one that's omni directional and very good for doing interview stuff with. If you check back over the next few weeks I should have some more videos going up that use these two mics. Cheers, Dave.
@martyxke
6 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave. Thanks for the reply. I preferred the sound of the Rode, ever so slightly, if I'm honest, but I was listening with some sennheiser headphones on, so I could perceive the subtle differences more acutely than through my laptop speakers. Inputting into my Sony A6300, both my mics deliver about the same quality, but then the pre amps in the camera aren't up to much. I also have a Tascam 60d, but it's way too cumbersome to use for "run and gun" situations; but after what you said, I think I will try recording both mic's simultaneously into that, just to see the difference a better recorder makes. I did notice however, the A6300 peaks a lot with the Boya, even with the level turned way down, which was why I also bought the Rode, ( thinking it wouldn't be as sensitive) Unfortunately they both peak around the same level on the Sony, so I ended up modifying the Boya, splitting its mono output into a dual mono, with one feed having attenuation ( plenty of room inside the boya's body for the resistors) to give me a low level back up, should the normal feed peak. I now use the Boya more than the Rode because of this mod, as I have the option to use either channel, or combine them and normalize to get the level I need. I think your idea of a better capsule would be worth looking into though, but improved audio is something I'm only just scratching the surface of, and theres so much to learn! What would be an interesting video, is a better capsule, AND duel mono, with attenuation on one of the channels.
@DavidHarry
6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Is it Marty? That's interesting about the attenuation you've done I done the same with my Yi 4K+ with it's USB/mic cable. It's a great camera for picture but terrible for audio. How did you do the attenuation for your Boya? Was it and L-Pad? What kind of resistors and values did you use? How did you get into the back of the Boya? I can't seem to sort that one out, the back doesn't seem to screw off. Have you got any examples of your attenuation? The Boya has a bit of an issue. Its body isn't quite right for a cardioid capsule. If you look at how it mounts into the front the design and aluminium ring block that holds the capsule almost covers the entire rear of the capsule and its rear vents/ports, which impede the way a cardiod works. Check out these clips. These are a couple of my unpublished videos, they're preliminary tests that I do before doing a proper public video. These are part of my tests with the Boya and a Primo 172 capsule. It's an omni capsule and while not best for certain situations that require the focueds pickup of a cardiod, the sound is way better than any cardioid Micro mic. I also use a modified mic body so I can go hand held with the Rode Micro and Boya. In one video I'm also on a wireless system. Go to about 11:30 in the first video and this is where the examples of the Primo/Boya start. The second video is a further enhancement test. kzitem.info/news/bejne/tGh3zXupnmRifY4 kzitem.info/news/bejne/qYOjymmjpXNklYo Cheers, Dave.

Hi Dave, I got the idea off the internet, but instead of making a lead that was attenuated, I decided to house it all within the body of the mic. The values from my research were 1800ohms and 220 ohms, but I didn't have a 220 lying around, so I just stuck in the nearest one I could find, not sure what it's value was. The back of the Boya unscrews, but in the end I just soldered the resistors at the capsule end, and ran an extra feed down the mic body. Originally the stereo terminals are soldered together, to give the same feed to each channel, but I just split them, and ran the attenuated feed onto one pole, and the normal feed to the other. I tried to attach a pic for you, but it's a while since I used photobucket, and none of the links I pasted in worked :(. Marty

Been looking at these two mics. Only really need one for a few situations. I have others I use as my main. So there is to me a slight difference in sound. And the bracket on the boya is cheap. That said the boya comes with all the cables I will ever need. With rose I will have to buy more. Therefore is it worth me spending double on the rode, all in? For me I don’t get double the value or performance so will be happy with the boya. Great way to test and a great video. Keep it up, I am a new subscriber. Awesome 👏

Dam you being so helpful in providing a link. 😆 Was going to get Boya for around £22 but if your link is working I will get the comica I think for the same price. Hi Dave. Last year, I began making some videos for fun, and liked it. Bought some gear to help it. One of the purchases I made, apparently, was the Boya MM1 microphone. And, compared to the internal stereo mic on my Sony Xperia XZ Premium, it produces just an incredibly high level of background hiss! I haven't noticed any hiss on this video. Great test. You can really hear the lower frequency response of the Boya vs Rode. If the Boya had a high pass switch option, I'd like that better. But it doesn't I don't think. So Rode would be better utility wise to keep low end rumble out.

I am looking for a small shotgun mic to replace my Rode Mic Me. The Mic Me grips the side of my Android and I really do not like the ongoing struggle with that grip thing forcing the side of the phone. So, now I tried to put it on a grip rig like the Beast Grip Pro and now I can't find an affordable cold shoe mount! Not only that, the short cables (1 foot) found on Amazon do not allow for listening to the audio while recording (with app). I am sorry I ever bought the Mic Me - it was designed to go on the side of the phone and not a grip rig - so, I guess I have to try another solution. I will go over to your comica review. Conclusion : for indoor Audio , better voice clarity, Boya is the one, Outdoors: windy day, filming road vehicles, trains, Rode is the one, but Rode isn't good in close up human voice, high on the treble

Rode's dead cat is definitely better, but the more bass on the side of the Boya makes speech to sound much more natural. I'm glad, that I didn't waste double the money on a slightly bigger wind muff :D

David, you have done an amazing pro test. Truly objective. The Boya definitely has some bottom end that the Rode does not. because it was shot outdoors, I am wondering if the slight buffeting on the Boya might be an issue with its windsock. I kept hoping that the low wind would die down totally. How would you feel about doing the same test inside? Also - silly question, I suppose, but what cameras are you using and did you shoot 1080 P because stuff also looks good, too. You have two angles, so thought I would ask. Nice work - congrats from Nova Scotia, Canada. Bruce

Hi Bruce. Thanks for the great comment. Yes, the Boya has got more in the low frequency response, although this can be very problematic for a mic that's designed for video work if it doesn't have a bass cut filter, which the Boya doesn't. That interference on the Boya in certain positions was a mixture of RFI and as you've guessed, low frequency rumble. The Boya's shock mount isn't very good at decoupling the mic body and capsule, the Rode's Lyre shock mount is very good as it flexes a lot more and also has rubber at the point of contact which helps more with dampening/decoupling. Again, the Rode's deadcat is better than the Boya's. It's more transparent and seems to not rub as much. There are going to be good uses for the Boya but it being susceptible to RFI and not being very good at acoustic isolation with its stiff shock mount, you're gonna have to be very careful with it. The Rode is much better designed from the ground up as far as RFI, wind and vibration resistance are concerned. It is not as good at low frequencies compared to the Boya but this also helps with rumble etc. The Rode may seem a bit more brighter sounding in the upper mid frequencies but I like this about that mic as it helps with picking out dialogue against other sounds, that and its cardioid pick up pattern. I've found a great use for the Boya. Replacing its cardioid with a Primo EM172 omni capsule, turns it into an amazing omni electret mic. Here's some links to some of my preliminary mic tests you may find interesting. I basically do a bunch of tests before deciding to do a proper review video, I upload these to my test channel as unpublished videos to share with some friends to get feedback. This is one of the tests with Boya and the Primo EM172 capsule: kzitem.info/news/bejne/qYOjymmjpXNklYo This is the Boya with the EM172 inside a cheaper plastic version of my hand held modification, this is indoors: kzitem.info/news/bejne/xaKsq4tpmHyemYY This is the Boya's capsule inside a cheap hand held body, as I don't like wasting parts when I do modifications: kzitem.info/news/bejne/z2ugp2h9raOqi5g This is very long test that I did for my KZitem friend, Ian Craig, it's basically a bunch of stuff that's ended up being useful for other videos, there maybe another explanation in there about my hand held modification that works with the Boya, Rode and Comica: kzitem.info/news/bejne/tGh3zXupnmRifY4 As for the filming. I use a Sony FDR-AX100 as my main camera. I shoot in 4K/UHD then edit in 1080 which allows me to apply zooms, pans and reframe in post if I need it. If I get time when shooting I'll use a synced B-Cam which is either a phone or my Yi 4K+ action camera. The Yi has very bad audio issues but its picture is excellent and can shoot beyond 4K in a 4:3 aspect ratio. I was initially very disappointed with the Yi as it is better than the GoPro 5 & 6 for picture, I've had both, but terrible for audio. After resigning myself to its audio issues, It's now an excellent budget B-Cam or great A-Cam when recording audio on something else. I've also done a lens modification to the Yi, so I now have two focus marks, one for wide shooting and one for vlog type closeups. Although the Yi is a great action camera I mostly use the it in 2.7K, medium field of view with lens distortion correction applied in camera, as I don't do action stuff, more traditional drama/interview type shooting. Here's a macro video that I done with the Yi after the lens mod. The resolution of this camera is absolutely amazing. If you read the descriptions it'll tell you how I went about shooting: kzitem.info/news/bejne/uH6gzaOYr2KppoY Cheers, Dave.

Thanks for the video. It seems that the Boya has more low end, but picks up more ambient noise. Rode is thinner sounding but a little more noise rejecting. Do you guys agree with that? I wish Rode had that low end that boys have, since I intend to record some guitar videos with it...

Hi, Joseph. Thanks for your kind comment. I personally prefer the Rode to all the other similar small video mics. It's a solid build, it's wind filter works very well and it also has the best shockmount out of all the similar mics. Some people don't like it because it's a bit bass light with its tone. I personally prefer this as it helps to reduce rumble etc. and also helps to keep dialogue clear. If you're into video mics, call back in about a week or so. I've been testing the Neewer NW-410 with a Saramonic SmartRig, the combination is absolutely amazing and clearly the best video mic combination for anyone on a budget. In fact, on casual listening it's easily mistaken for my Sennheiser ME64 mic, which costs about 6 times more. The NW-410 comes in a pair, each with three capsules, an omni, a cardioid and a super cardioid. The price is only £50 for the lot. The Saramonic Smartrig is about £25. If you equate one NW-410 to £25, then paired with a Smartrig you're looking at about £50. The combination trashes every video mic in this price range and easily competes with ones that cost hundreds of pounds. Let me know if you're interested and I'll give you a link to one of my personal test videos of the NW-410 with the SmartRig. It's one of the many tests I do before I do a proper published KZitem video. Cheers, Dave.

Hey, thanks for all that info! I would definitely be interested in listening to one of the tests you have done on that combination of equipment, as what you have said sounds very promising! I think I actually just found the video and watched it! I was wondering, as I would be recording the majority of my videos indoors with reasonably minimal background noise, rather than outdoors in an open environment, would your recommendation still stay the same? If not, what setup would you recommend for use with a smartphone that comes under a similar price point? Thanks! Dropped a subscription by the way as well :)
@DavidHarry

Hi Joseph. Here's that link to the test with the Neewer NW-410, this is with the super cardioid capsule kzitem.info/news/bejne/qYGs2qiMrKtjaYY In one of the takes when I'm on the ME64 I think I show the 410 with the Smartrig. I think the 410 and the Smartrig are an absolute killer combination for the money and easily match or beat microphones costing way more. Bear in mind that the combo realistically costs about £50 and the Sennheiser is about £350. While the Sennhesier has a more open high end and is better for noise, sensitivity and dynamic range, on first listen you'd never guess this against the 410/SmartRig, especially after the dialogue has been limited (processed) in post. I've not posted any new public videos for about a month now, as I've been doing loads of testing with some new kit. I'm going to skip this month as far as public videos on this channel are concerned and then upload a video every day in August. You may be interested in some of the videos for August as I'm doing a few about the Z Cam E1 mini MFT camera. These videos will include a fair few about mics as well. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Joseph. I'm not sure if you've found the video I was talking about but the previous reply had the link in it. As for indoor stuff, I'd totally recommend the same setup, here's an unboxing video where I used the 410/super cardioid/SmartRig combo kzitem.info/news/bejne/k2en3Wd_koN9qXo The dialogue here wasn't even processed, just gained to 0db. Remeber, you've also got the option of a cardioid and omni capsule for the 410. As for noise. It's unlikely that you'd hear any on the 410 as whatever minimal self noise there is would likely be masked by ambient location noise. Even in the unboxing video, you'd be hard pushed to hear any self noise and the room was fairly quiet. It also sounds brilliant on a phone. Cheers, Dave.

Hello David,thanks for the video . I used the trs/trrs 3.5 mm adaptor for boya and connected it to the rode videomicro but the mic is not working on both my laptop and Samsung s9 plus. The reason I got this adaptor was due to the unavailability of the rode mic sc7 trs/trrs adaptor in souq ( an e-commerce company in Dubai that is bought by Amazon) . Is it the adaptor problem or is it just a mic problem ? Thanks
@DavidHarry
6 жыл бұрын
Hi. Have you tried the mic in something else to see if it works? Also, the TRS/TRRS cable has to be connected one way, the three band, TRS, has to go to the mic, the four band, TRRS has to go to the phone. Some computers do not use TRRS, they're the ones that have two sockets, mic & headphone. There's also a potential problem with the S9 and external mics, see my video about this potential problem. I use TRS/TRRS cables from one manufacturer with another one, as long as the cable isn't damaged they will work. Hope this helps. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Jonathan. I'm glad you like my accent :) I'm from Liverpool, locally the accent is known as Scouse. Here's some information as to the history of my accent en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scouse I'm also glad you liked the test as it was the fairest way of doing it and was probably good for showing and the plus and minus points of both mics. The Boya is affordable for anyone on a tight budget and will be better than most on boards mics. But I agree with you, I prefer the Rode. Although the Rode is a bit more expensive, this is probably reflected in its deadcat, which I also use on any other mic that it'll fit on, including my Sennheiser ME64. The Rode's shock mount is also better and is a Lyre type by Rycote, again, I use this on other mics. I also prefer the less bass response of the Rode, it helps to keep dialogue a bit brrrrighter :) and separated from other sounds that may be around. Cheers, Dave.

Hi Andrew. Sorry for the late reply. There's not enough between them as far as output is concerned that'll make too much difference to drive a low input device. Although the Rode has less self noise and sits in an edit easier and quicker. The MM1 is a bit lumpy sounding, too much low mid and not enough high mid. On balance out of all these small cardioid video type mics, I'd go for the Rode and it also has the best deadcat and shockmount of them all as well. It's a bit toppy but I find that helps with most voice types anyway. The Comica VM10 is also worth a look, it's a bit more weighted in the lower end compared to the Rode but not as reduced in the upper mid like the MM1. Call back soon, I'm doing another camera mic test with about 8 mics. Cheers, Dave.
