"Upspeak" has been noticeable here in the UK for at least the last decade, probably longer. It's been attributed to a generation that grew up watching Australian soaps, and of course "upspeak" is natural amongst Australians and New Zealanders. As for "vocal fry", I first noticed it on my frequent train journeys from Cambridge as far back as 2011; all of them were young females from college or university. It's almost as if they were trying to outdo each other as to who could sound the most like a crow with laryngitis. Very annoying.

It's more natural for a man's voice to sound like that. And it is *way* more likely to happen. But when a women uses that tone of voice, they have to *try* to use no fluctuation in their voice. Men usually don't change their tone of voice as much as women do. For men it's natural! Just listen! And their voice is way deeper to begin with. A women would usually be put in TENOR if they had a deeper voice. If a man had gotten put in TENOR, they would have a higher pitched voice compared to otger men.

The crazy thing is vocal fry is one of the most damaging things you can do to your vocal cords. Now women are doing this on purpose and when they are in their 60's will sound like chronic crack smokers. The fact is that 'fry' is inherent in the current American accent in both males and females - no value judgement implied. Compare this with British speakers. However, listening to old American films, I am not sure this was always so. 'Fry' is becoming very common in the UK however. It is not difficult to be conscious about one's speach and adjust it. For instance, any person of alleged importance starting a sentence with 'so' turns me off immediately.

Vocal fry is obnoxious. Sorry. It just is. It's like nails on a blackboard. It's like someone wants to deliberately annoy you. I'm sure that's not true, but it's extremely grating. It takes me half an hour to recover after hearing someone speak for any length of time with vocal fry. In women, it's usually associated with a high-pitched, nasal voice. The entire combination makes me want to rip my hair out. The other extremely annoying thing that young women do nowadays, along with the vocal fry, is to speak with a nasally quacking sound. They do not project their voice and they form their words in the back of their mouth, and sounds like "a" come out sounding like a duck. Nearly all the women commentators and newsanchors on tv seem to talk like that now. Drives me up a wall, and I sometimes have to shut them off because it is so irritating. Funny stuff! Add some *uptalk* to your gig. That's when a speaker's inflection ends a statement sentence more like it's a question. Example: "Last Saturday, we went to the mall? And we literally saw Mike at Victoria's Secret?" It was sooooo telling...uh-mah-gawd." Per that dialogue, you may notice I loathe incorrect usage of the word "literally". Thankfully, this kind of idiocy is comedy gold or, at least, silver (plated). ;) Do you want fries with that?
