@aidanz2006 You have a point to a degree but there are a few reasons why photogs want a true walk around lens, vs a super zoom PS: 1. Most true super zooms are about the same size as a rebel DSLR. 2. When photographers dont want to bring their DSLRs, they typically bring something even smaller, like their iPhone / Smartphone. 3. Many photogs like the walk-around lens because they are already very familiar with the camera, and therefore its easier to operate than having to learn 2 cameras.

@7irz Thank you for the comment, and I understand where you are coming from. It would actually make a good video. All lenses are standard based on the lens construction itself, not the size of the sensor it will work on. Thanks again!

@MyWuffi Exactly- thats the whole point. While you prefer to have a slightly wider aperture, I prefer to have the wider focal length range of 18-270 because I am usually shooting outdoors with a "Walk Around." 24-120 isnt wide or long enough for me.

Michael, Thanks for the review. I already own and love my Canon 18-200mm lens and have been using it now for over 2 years. It's just the absolute best walk around lens and what makes it great is the image stabilization which makes the lens more like a F2 or F2.8 lens at all focal lengths. As a former newspaper photographer who use to lug around those heavy L lenses I am very happy with the quality and lens sharpness. When I set the sharpness on my camer all the up I get even sharper photos.

Good video. I just bought the Canon 18-200mm and really like it. I've used an EOS 630 for years and finally made the switch to DSLR. It took me a while, but I've moved to the dark side. I'm a bit overwhelmed with the options on my EOS 60D. Great video. I appreciate the real world take on quality equipment for the amateur photographer. I'm looking forward to more videos.

@IndysRider Hard to find a "true" low light zoom. Closest thing I could recommend to that would be a 24-70 2.8 or a 70-200 2.8. The 18-270 is great outdoors, not so much in low light.

Michael, first off, thank you for your videos! My photography has improved and I understand so much more about the how and why things work how they do. I currently have a 30D & 40D with the 50mm 1.8, Canon 18-55 and Sigma 18-200 lenses. I am looking for a really good low light zoom lens to use at weddings. I have a friend with a Tamron 18-270 that works well, and a friend with a canon 17-85 that has incredible clarity. I can't decide and I want to spend wisely!

I'm tired of carrying wide-angle lenses of medium focal length, different zooms, converters I have this lens for about 2 years and is terrific. I compare mi Canon70-200 f/4 L + 1,4x converter (270mm) with photos taken with my Tamron 18-270mm , at same aperture and speed and I almost didn't notice big difference. It is very light and extremely versatile. For long trips is the lens I carry anyway. :)

@raidtariq There is a good chance nothing was wrong with the lens at all. Shooting at night means that the camera will have a hard time focusing with ANY lens, if you are using all AF indicators, it will make focusing even more difficult because you are turning focus control over to the camera. It would be better to test the focusing abilities of the lens during the day, with one focus square.

@MichaelTheMentor what you said is defiantly right but why Canon 18-200mm gives you 100% focusing when you shooting at night and indoor with professional external flash like (Speedlite)? The Tamron doesn't give you 10% out focus, it gives you 90% out focus which means you can not use this lens at night. If you go to Tamron site you will see they gave this lens name (All-in-One) and with this issue I don't think so it is achieve it. The PZD really the worst lens I had when shooting at night.

@MarcS4R I have a nice mix of Canon L lenses on non-L EF & EF-S lenses to go with my 50D & 7D. Yes, the L lenses give you better performance, but the higher price is not always proportional to lens quality. It really comes down to your own needs, and how important small details are to you. Many standard EF lenses have Image Quality that approach & arguably equal L lens results. Often L lens owners' opinions are colored by the excessive cost of the Ls, rather than their technical merits.

I bought the Tamron 18-270 VC PZD to replace my Tamron 18-250 (Non IS/VC version). The 18-250 is so much better that I've probably shot less than 100 images with the 18-270 (I've shot about 4,000 images with the 18-250). The 18-250 is so much sharper with better contrast. The worst thing, though, is the bokeh... especially on specular highlights. They look like little donuts - a bit like a mirror lens - and they are rough! Nothing creamy about this bokeh! I've sent the lens back to Tamron for checking and they say it's within spec so I don't have a dud copy. Tamron have just brought out the 16-300. I'm going to have a look at it but I'm going to be very careful, shooting lots of test shots before splashing out the cash. I know it's a superzoom, with all its compromises but this one (the 18-270) is too much of a compromise!

If you want versatility and compactness why not just buy a super-zoom camera or even a high-end compact instead? What's the point of buying and carrying around a big bulky camera that has the option to change lenses if you aren't going to use more than one lens? Imo, lenses such as these defeat the objective of buying a DSLR in the first place.

I disagree. Some of these "walk-around" lenses go down to f6.3 when fully zoomed out. (wide open !!!). This means ... in low light the cam gets in serious trouble when focusing. Only the cross sensor elements will work. Sometimes even only the center sensor is light sensitive enough to work. Everything beyond f5.6 (sometimes even f4) is pretty useless in low light conditions.

@MyWuffi How you define low light ? Well, if you gona take pictures inside your closet better you use a flash, don't know how and why are you using a full zoom "IN" at night, you need a tripod maybe, just be careful on middle of streets, whatch for the cars. That argument of the max aperture don't make me mutch sense, you have lot of setings to play with, ISO, shuter speed etc. I got good photos using f8 or even f11, no problem with that f6.3 For sports or shows use a primary 10 times expensive.

@MichaelTheMentor 18-135 and 18-200 personally. 18-270 is bound to have issues due to its huge focus range, and I expect color fringing from both lenses. I must admit that both Sigma and Tamron has above decent lenses but the 18-200 is just not one of them, and despite that it is very impressive that the 18-270 already is, it just doesnt do its job well. Honestly, if money is no option, an L series perhaps the 24-105 or the 24-70 is a better choice. Otherwise 15-85 would be my second option.

@MyWuffi Sorry 10-24 is not suficient in cities you will lose all the details you could capture from old buildings or even new, like windows, street lamps, details of monuments, people at their balconies, millions of things a good eye could detect. That is a good lens but only for wide angle shots and landscapes or maybe some indor shoots.
