I’ve never heard one of your “rants” that don’t have reasons, and in my mind justifiable ones.

I've made several rotary phase converters, how they work is by using start capacitors to start a 3 phase idler motor, once the motor is spinning the start capacitors are disconnected ideally with a voltage sense relay. Once the motor is spinning under single phase it generates the third leg but, the three legs are not perfectly balanced, for balance you add run capacitors to get the third leg about 10% off of proper phase angle separation. If done right you will have no problem running just about any of it properly sized, the more motors you are running at the same time makes the power cleaner. VFDs are awesome for single machines but if you set them up the should be controlled by the start stop and safety switches on the machine your using.

The welder should have a rotary phase converter if it has a motor I would use the VFD. You have a lot of control with motor speed with a VFD. The HVAC industry has been using VFD’s for 30 years.

Well Mr. E you have awakened me once more kinda like you did circa 2011. I work in environmental industry which on a daily basis dealt with 2hp grinders. when you mentioned your static phase converter I was ignorant to it's process. So I looked it up and there it was looked just like the inner workings of the grinders I'd been servicing for years...watching your videos produced to this day make my world complete. Thanks Chuck E 2009

Sure hope this is a sign of more excellent content coming. This is definitely interesting information, especially with the comment about the rare equipment being cheaper.

Yes. There's an industrial reseller an hr from me. Welders a 1/4 of the price of an equivalent single phase one. Miller CP-300 for $500-600. Millermatic in the 250-300 amp range will cost you around $2k used...in my area, anyways.

America Rotary makes good quality 3 phase converters. A lot of youtube machinist use them to run there 3 phase equipment.

As far as welding machines go 600 amp machine only thing you're going to be doing with that is submerged Arc or gouge if it's a cvcc the old-timers that came out of spray arc shops running piece-rate companies like Krause plow case international John Deere something like that they had to have six hundred amp power sources because they were using almost all of it 045 or 052 wire coming out at between 450 to 600 inches a minute I welded more John Deere rockers for Krause plow than most people living you can pick up a good 350 amp machine for a couple of hundred bucks whether rather it's a Miller or Lincoln or a Hobart I actually prefer the old 600-amp Lindy sitting on a quad cart with a boom feeder freaking dangerous

I don’t think phase converters are a “one size fits all” type of product, a vfd may not take a big instant hit like a welder wants, but it can ramp a motor up to speed very efficiently.. so take a look at your particular needs then match it to the best option, each option is best in its own situations..

We have one that will make 6 of yours is set up at our fertilizer blending area will not work if it is not running 3 phase power where there is only single phase.

As manufacturing left America, US citizens lost all exposure to industrial equipment. They honestly don't know the difference between solid "old iron" and imported crap.

Need to upgrade ye olde garage electrical before I can get a phase converter. Only have a 20 amp breaker for the whole garage.

VFDs not proven? They have been used for decades in HVAC applications and lots of others. They also give you a much wider range of speeds, which is often an issue for lathes, in particular. The rotary works OK, but they are massive, usually expensive, and horribly inefficient. You can coble them together if you have motors sitting around, I guess.

If it has capacitors it has an electronic board, so it has electronics.
