Some excellent recommendations there, nice jumping off points. I'd add in Mortal Gods and To The Strongest for Ancients - easy rules that aren't as historically in depth so are good for people coming into this side of the hobby. TTS in particular is cheap to pick up as well which helps massively. Also had quite a lot of fun with One Hour Wargames by Neil Thomas. Includes several different periods in one book.

I am a massive fan of bolt action (owning all 5 major nations).... I kinda bounced off Flames of war it's a good game but the scale doesn't do it for me. Blackpowder is fun (but a big investment unless your going with 1:72 scale airfix kits like I did because ironically the scale for that doesn't bother me) as is 'the men who would be king' by ospray... Historicals are honestly on it the best to get into as the many of the models can be picked up in 1:72 scale for very cheap.... Love the paper craft suggestion at the end. Nice

Yeah - one of the massive benefits of Historicals is being able to snap up a lot of models for pretty darn cheap!

I would add Blood & Plunder, Blood & Steel (upcoming), and Clash of Spears to your list.

I would wholeheartedly agree on those three too - I might have to do another video looking at more options!

Nice one, Ben. I'm a huge fan of Bolt Action but it's tough to find anyone to play with because my gaming group are all into Fantasy and SciFi stuff (mostly GW).

Ah that's always the kicker! Bolt Action is awesome fun though. I played a while back and I think the rules are excellently done and it's really easy for a new Historical wargamer to get into them. Hopefully some folks will pull their finger out and play some games with you!

Thanks for watching - yeah, I would really recommend SAGA. Solid system that allows for cool battles with a bit of a heroic edge to them.

I started with Sails of Glory and Lion Rampant, the latter of which can be quite inexpensive to get into. You can get an entire retinue in the Perry Miniatures plastic Hundred Years War English box.

I do historical wargames, having started with a strong interest in history, which led to a LOT of reading and a working knowledge and understanding of history. All of that led to a cum laude Master of Arts degree in military history. I find fantasy games to be dull and boring. --Bob Bailey in Maine

That's cool that it all came together like that. There is a massive amount of depth that you can dive into when it comes to historical wargaming that's for sure. Once you get the bug, you're sucked in!

@@BecauseOfDragons I would be happy if videos like yours got more ppl to step away from the table and look around and see there is more to gaming than handfuls of dice and crushing metagaming. There seems to be some interest locally in Raise the Black (B&P) but then again you would have to be a cold hearted bastard to not at least be curious if someone offered you the chance to play pirates, particularly Blackbeard.

I know a lot of folks who love Blood & Plunder - it does seem a neat game. I was very interested in the Fire On The Frontier expansion. I am eager to maybe give Blood & Valour a go as I think World War I is fascinating

@@BecauseOfDragons Or Blood and Steel, Māori wars, or American-Mexican, or what-if like Zulu vs Māori. I do agree WW1 is such an under (and mis) represented period. Likely cause most people have the trench warfare stuck in their heads but that was only a small part even in Western Europe which was a (geographically) small part of the conflict. With Blood and Valor moving into the Russian Civil War there seems to be quite a bit of interest there. And anything that gets someone to pick up a book and read is a good thing (I include myself here).

Have to say, I think Saga is looking pretty shabby now, and it was always basically about logistics - piling up points to do things that would be utterly impossible in ANY period. For ‘dark age’ or Early Medieval skirmishing I would recommend Blood Eagle, or the adaptation of Baron’s War, or even the old but wonderful set of rules in Don Featherstone’s Skirmish Wargaming book.
