We were in the process of working towards an AAC device for my son in therapy and then our insurance changed and made therapy too expensive to continue. Plus it only allows 30 sessions. So we had to discontinue therapy and the AAC isn’t an option anymore. He’s in the pre-k program at our local public school, and they push back even at the thought of a device. The word “crutch” was used and I know it will be a fight. So I’m flying solo. Is there a way I can access an app on my own? If so, which ones? He has an iPad already, but would you success getting a separate iPad specially for communication? Thank you!

Hi Meredith 💕 regarding speech therapy, one thing you could try is getting parent coaching so that you can implement best practices at home. In regards to the school pushing back on your son having access to an AAC … you can definitely advocate for that to change! Don’t wait any longer! Every child deserves access to communication ❤️ my son is 4 years old and too many times I was told “he’s not ready for aac, let’s use PECS” well … I didn’t give up as I knew AAC was something I had to try for my son and I got it for him even when everyone was saying no. I got him an iPad, got him Proloquo2go, found a neurodiverse affirming SLP and he has made so much progress! He’s able to tell me how he feels, when he’s hungry, and is now counting and doing the abcs on his device 🥹

Hi! So sorry about your experience. AAC does not hinder communication. We have an entire video about getting started with AAC. kzitem.infoLs6dY9kcUeo?si=aWYjKN9MF5RP8vfb as for apps, big fan of AVAZ! and some people will say that having a separate iPad for communication is best practice but if you have one for now while you are getting started, that is okay too!

What app do you suggest starting with for those who know nothing about aac to use with their toddler / preschooler?

Is it wrong for me to push for an AAC device(hi tech) when the speech therapist insist on using PECS first. I feel like he has no interest on PECS but he is always eager to use his iPad. What are your thoughts?

I’m not Jessie .. but would love to share my experience. My son was introduced to PECS at 2.5 years old and all it did was give him very limited options to communicate. That PECS book had about 30 of his favorite things and that was it. The therapist would add a few more pictures here and there but nothing like giving him an AAC. I made the decision to get him the iPad, the app and start him on it after following accounts like Jessie’s and learning that AAC was the way to go …and … he has made so much progress in 9 months. He navigates his AAC like a pro, is able to tell me how he feels, when he is hungry and when he is thirsty 🥹 this would have never happened if I would have listened to SLPs that said no to him getting an AAC.

We don't recommend PECS as it focuses on compliance more than language acquisition. Go with your gut! Tell the speech therapist you want to trial a high tech system. And feel free to send her our video on AAC myths. kzitem.infoLs6dY9kcUeo?si=aWYjKN9MF5RP8vfb
