@@mv9370 You may have missed this, but the entire thing takes place in the confessional dial, which had been explained as a tool for the timelords to give their last confession before being uploaded into the matrix (to find peace). You aren’t supposed to remember the events, but Rassilion turned it into a torture chamber and 12 ends up remembering everything right when he gets at the final door and is one confession away from freedom. I’m sure timelord memory can account for billions of years (they can literally live forever considering the high council can grant more regenerations). It also isn’t expanded upon whether the Doctor remembered EVERYTHING or just his death and that he’s been doing that for so long. Really, I think thats fine. A story like heaven sent can bog itself up getting caught up in the details. We know enough for the story and it works.

I suspect a lot of the people who don't like Twelve dropped out part way through season 8 while the show was (by design) still nailing the character down. That season is about exploring this new incarnation of the Doctor and both he and his companion trying to work out who he is now. And he's pretty unlikeable at times during this period. I can see a number of fans being turned off and quitting the show when he callously abandoned a companion in "Kill the Moon", for example.

I get the disappointment of Gallifrey not being as big a deal in that episode as it could've been, but it gave Clara an infinitely superior ending. @gryotharian

As much as we didn't want Clara to die, I don't think her ending after hell bent was superior, it kinda just showed Moffat has a problem killing characters, ironically, since what i've seen the fans hate him for is being to eager to kill characters. but between reviving Clara 2 episodes after a dramatic and final feeling death, and the thing they pulled with Bill in The Doctor Falls, he really can't give a companion a solid ending. That being said, I still do really enjoy his run. Not quite as much as RTD, but pretty close.

@@gryotharian Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, Moffat had his faults and I totally get why a lot of people prefer FTR, I just never felt that that the "reckless" thing ever really suited Clara, so having that be such a big part of her demise, coupled with what I feel are some pretty serious plot holes, irked me to say the least. The other factor for me is that HB seems to be the real ending he had planned all along, so it seems like a stupid decision to me to kill her off in a fake ending only to bring her back right at the end for the real one. They shouldn't have bothered with FTR and just done the HB version. I totally get where you're coming from, though. Also it's nice to see someone else who actually likes Davies AND Moffat, rather than picking one and throwing rocks at anyone who likes the other :)

I love Capaldi but I think his episodes had very bad writing for the most part. Any leeway I'd given Moffat about how he was handling the character was well and truly used up by this point. The one episode I did like was the ice warrior on Mars one. You say the problem with it is that the doctor doesn't do anything, but that is actually why I liked it a lot. The conflict is not resolved by magic space man from out of nowhere, but by the characters who were living the conflict. This rare feat really typifies the weakness of the recent tranche of episodes. The problem is that the Doctor's character is far too constrained to be the focal point of the series. Doctor Who is at its best when the stories aren't really about him, but about the characters and locations and stories he discovered. I've got no problem with one-off Doctor focused episodes, but most of the recent tranche neglected everything else. One dimensional, disposable, interchangeable side characters mulling about in frayed plots with only the tired call of "oh my, look at the doctor, isn't he interesting?" to pass the time. There are two ways out of this: to keep it character focused but actually develop the character - the problem is that the show is incapable of injecting lasting consequences into the doctor's character, so the radical steps needed to get the show out of the moffat fug would never be taken; or, to let the doctor be a character in the story, rather than the story itself - but the problem with that is that you need a writer/show runner who can produce numerous interesting characters and put them in numerous interesting stories. Though there were moments I was hopeful in Capaldi's era, Moffat failed to deliver on either one of these. Chibnall's first episode has a few of the same hang ups (the banter is arguably clumsier, while the exposition dumps are just as agonizing, but perhaps it's forgivable for the plot to be a bit throw-away in an intro episode) but the fact there is a _group_ of companions all of whom seem to have potential to develop is my ray of sunshine right now.

I find Series 8 to be a mixed bag with no idea what they want the Doctor to be from episode to episode, whereas series 10 is a nicely self contained collection of fun adventures with a criminally underrated companion, and finally, finally, finally, a definitive characterization for the twelfth Doctor, exemplified by his simple yet effective motto, "Do it because it's kind." Season 8 also had the disadvantage of relying heavily on the completely chemistry-less relationship of Clara and Danny Pink. Conceptually it could've worked, but did anyone genuinely buy for a second that those two were deeply in love? P.S. It wasn't that the writers had no idea who they wanted the Doctor to be *The new Doctor* had no idea who he was yet. Twelve struggled with that question for the whole of season 8 and it wasn't until the season finale that he finally came to terms with his new persona and realised _"I'm not a good man! I'm not a bad man! I'm not a hero! I'm not a President! And no, I'm not an officer! You know who I am? I am an idiot with a box and a screwdriver, passing through, helping out. What I loved about Bill was that after classic who we finally got that purely inquisitive companion again and the Doctor was in a teacher role (I wish that had been expanded on). Nardole was just an amazing foil to that and showed us the other side of 12 in series 10. Missy being part of the TARDIS crew (for like 10 seconds) was just a straight up wet dream for me. I wanted the show to continue in that direction from series 10 (and at least 1 more series of bill, nardole, and missy with 12). I definitely preferred them to 2.5 series of Clara being the ONLY companion. 12’s character hit its peak for me at the end of hell bent when he got in the TARDIS, got his sonic, and moved on from clara (not the best episode, but the beginning of the Doctor at his peak). The following series 9 specials and series 10 was just my favorite who era.

I almost teared up when you said "the subscribe to official Doctor Who" thingy.. Also in defense of "Smile"- the doctor couldn't know if reset button would fix the problem and the killing spree will not resurface again in the future. He saw the effect of one robot death on another, they showed their anger and confusion just like any other species when "one of them" died. Only then he was sure he could just erase all the memory of "keep humans happy" regime and let them be like a new species, in other words "a reset button". I know this is my excuse and the episode could've explained it better.

For me series 8 was drivel since it felt apparent they had no clue how they wanted to characterise Capaldi's doctor. Capaldi improved as in season 9 etc. but honestly series 8 was one of the worst seasons of New Who for me.

I grew up watching 11 as a kid and saw him as my favourite doctor, but then papa Capaldi came along and swept me off my feet. It was so sad to see him go and I really wish him and Moffat had stayed just a little longer. For me it's: 1: Under the lake/Before the flood 2: World enough and time/The Doctor falls 3: Face the raven 4: Heaven sent 5: The husbands of River Song

Capaldi was the Doctor who got me through High School. I miss him very much. But seeing Jodie in action, I know she's perfect for the role. And as for Twice Upon a Time, I think Capaldi was good, but it was a bit of a severe missed opportunity.

Capaldi is my favourite Doctor of the modern era, sure some of the stories had issues but Capaldi somehow manages to make even the weakest episodes of his era watchable. And when Capaldi's era was at its best it gave me some of my absolute favourite moments of the show. The quality of the episodes from his era may have been a mixed bag (though I really liked most of Series 9, despite Hell Bent), but Capaldi himself was consistently brilliant and I'd have loved to have seen him stay for another season or two.

I have watched this video far too many times. But God, I miss Capaldi. Just watched Twice Upon A Time for the fourth or so time, and I cried even more than I had the previous three times. The moment Clara's voice and theme are heard, boom. Blubbering. I miss Capaldi. I miss Clara. I miss Nardole. And even Bill. This was for sure my favorite run of the show, and I'll be rewatching it for years to come.

In my opinion, the seasons of Peter Capaldi’s Doctor got better each time, with 8 being not very good and 10 being really great and 9 somewhere in the middle. I think this is probably because I really enjoyed the storylines in 10, and I didn’t care so much about the (admittedly lacking) character development. I guess that’s just how the series connected with me personally

I think Capaldi was possibly the best actor to portray the character. As much as my favourite is Eleven, I think Capaldi was the best at his job... acting. Now, there’s never been a bad performance put to the Doctor, even Colin Baker has some stand-out moments where the script actually allowed him to act.

Peter Capaldi was escellent as the Doctor. I think that when 'youngsters' go back in times to come to revisit his stories, having gained their own sense of time passing and experiences that come with it, they'll see he really developed the character of our so-loved champion. Flatline was a personal favourite, alond with his final three in which the Master/Missy also expresses how life can change you and for the better. Jon Pertwee was my Doctor, but Matt Smith and Capaldi under Moffat gave us a real depth that a kids show often can only dream about.

It's a shame we went from one of the greatest doctors to the most terrible and flat doctor to ever have existed. People could say that we're probably just overreacting after a great doctor but Jodie's whole run so far has been figuring out who she is. AND IT HASN'T EVEN ENDED. SHE'S STILL FIGURING THAT OUT. And Chibnall decided that the best route is to end the show altogether? Just find the right doctor. It could have been a woman after all. It just needed to be the right one.

I need 12 back too. but buddy, mummy on the orient express. flatline. HEAVEN SENT. bruh. WORLD ENOUGH AND TIME. the pilot is also great. Listen is also great, you don't NEED a monster, thought it was a little too concept heavy. if u seriously don't think any of these are in the top 5, buddy. listen, just... Listen. (i couldn't resist). Before the flood is also pretty great yeah, i love the flip cards bit. I wish the Doctor solved more situations or at least tried to with the Before the flood and A Christmas carol, go back in time strategy.

Interesting, we share most of our opinions on Doctor Who, Eccleston and Capaldi were great, series 8, 9 and 10 weren't as bad as people made them out to be, and Capaldi was amazing in the role especially with some of the material he had to work with having some big flaws in certain parts of his runs writing. I do disagree with your opinion on Kill The Moon though, the story had a tonne of potential and the story itself are really good, but holy crap was the attempt at scientific elements a complete failure... The moon is an egg? Uhh... The moon falling apart like that would have been catastrophic and you cannot tell me that a newborn creature birthed an egg that happened to be exactly the same mass as the one that just hatched... Not to mention the supposedly unicellular bacteria that looked suspiciously like space spiders, and were far too complex to be unicellular, especially at that size. Kill The Moon did great things for Clara as a character, but dear lord was it a failure of conveying the rest of that plot well. I'm also a tad unhappy with the amount of attempts they made in Capaldi's run to keep putting in really awkward comments on women. Time Lords are quite evidently not beyond concepts of gender, I'd have loved the line about gender that 12 said to Bill if it had been backed up in at least the last few times Gallifrey has been seen or referenced in New Who, but it just wasn't, in fact the scene where 12 shot the General (Because you know... the Doctor is known for taking guns and shooting people... right? Seriously, with Capaldi being such a fan of the series, I'm surprised he didn't try to get them to change that scene to remove the gun) the General makes comment about male ego... They directly contradicted themselves and both scenes suffered even more because of it. Bill sadly got the shaft (Not really her style, but details) which sucks, as it just makes it seem as though they don't understand how to handle sexuality when Moffat himself did it so well with Jack Harkness, I really enjoyed the scene where Bill is just having somewhat of a date with another woman, as they didn't make a point of having Bill explain her sexuality, it was a moment of genuine humanisation. And honestly, I was fine with her telling that other student in the episode Knock Knock that she didn't swing that way, as it made sense for the setting, sadly a lot of the other times it just felt forced. I also really wish they hadn't used the whole mysterious entity saves the companion from death and they go off to travel the universe together trope two seasons in a row, I wasn't big on it with Clara, though I did like the parallels to Donna with the memory wiping scene, and to have the same thing happen to Bill felt cheap. Moffat seems to have adopted this view that death doesn't fit with Doctor Who, and that's a shame as some of the best moments that previous Doctors have faced involve death as a primary element, I mean, Eccleston's series wasn't afraid to kill characters when it needed to, and the episode Dalek did a beautiful job at showing the Doctor's anger and fear when it came to seeing that Dalek, going to the extremes of saying horrific things that out of context would make him sound like a terrible person.

The character development and story concepts come first for me in science fantasy Who. I can overlook a lot I guess if the Doctor and the companion get to be as tested and expressive as they are in this story. Great post, nice to finally see some familiar opinions.
