I just got the 42" zero turn Ryobi and I actually love the joystick. I learned it pretty quick and it's great, love this mower!

Helpful charts. I believe the EGO with the reg lap bars is $1000 less than the same mower with the steering wheel. I’ll go with the bars.

I have a 2017 ego push mower model. I guess I will stick with it $6000 is outrageous but it looks like a sweet ride! I have two big lawns to cut here but summers the lawns die. $6000 riding mower will just be sitting for months. Right now in the winter I could use it. Grass is thick. For $6000 I better be using it all year long.

The biggest difference between these two is the Ego is IP4 waterproof and the Ryobi is only IP1 - NOT waterproof AT ALL! The Ego also has a water port on the top of the deck so you can flush the blades to clean them.

@jimbeam4111 IP4 means it is splash proof. So if you leave the Ego out in the rain it should be fine. The Ryobi will be fried! It's not waterproof at all.

I had a 54" Hustler Flip up ZT in our last home of over an acre and a half. The hydraulic flip up deck made it effortless to clean the deck and remove the blades to sharpen them. No reviews I've seen for these electrics mention how to clean the underside of the deck from built up grass clippings or how to remove and replace the blades. So what's the answers?

I would do Ryobi as I'm already in the ecosystem of batteries for 18v and 40v. My Toro Timemaster 30" is the only gas i have and won't swap it for Ryobi but more likely another Toro unit for quality mowers.

I heard Ryobi technicians will come to your home if your riding lawnmower has issues. I think you have to haul the Ego riding mower to a repair shop yourself. Not everyone owns a trailer/truck.

Maybe, but my neighbor just bought a Ryobi and sent it back the next day for a replacement. That’s really the biggest problem with any of these electric mowers. Nobody knows how to fix them. There’s probably half a dozen people within five miles that can fix my gas mower when it breaks.

at 67 yrs, for my parents, i spent a lot of time behind push mowers, gas mowers, and self propelled mowers as a kid. they all had one thing in common-i hated them. I don't care for the joystick but the steering wheel is right up my alley. as an adult, my home has small lawns. but the only way I would cut a huge lawn is with a riding mower or tractor!

I'm ready to pull the trigger on the EGO but my wife is concerned about "scalping" and uneven cutting that we experienced with a tractor style gas riding mower a few years back. Does the EGO cut evenly on uneven terrain?

How in the world did you figure the watt hours on the Ryobis? While the numbers for the EGO are spot on the Ryobis are off with over ten percent. And how did you calculate the horsepower equivalent?
@james2042

The hp equivalent is provided by manufacturer. Their wh calculations are spot on. The 40v batteries are actually 36 and the 80v are actually 72.

Um, guys, you forgot to mention that EGO was offering the 52” with all 6 twelve amp hour batteries for $5,999 as well (same price as the e-steer 42” with only 4 batteries). I noticed you did mention Ryobi’s 54” price even though you weren’t comparing that model physically either. Way to drop the ball . If you fully load out the batteries in the E-Steer, it has more watt hours than the fully loaded out 42” Ryobi. That ball is just rolling away.

Great review and looks like you had a blast,i would like to see the cut quality of the grass as thats paramount,never had a z turn mower but i have the ego lm2135 sp walk behind mower and i really like ego products so would lean that way,can the z turn give a nice even cut with such a wide deck especially over bumpy ground?i have a quarter acre garden and there's no slopes or anything but it is uneven or bumpy in places,reel mowers are ok but not everyone wants really short grass plus using the z turn just looks like fun

The joystick idea is baffling to me, why did Ryobi think that is a good idea? I can see how that would be useful for some people, but everyone I have talked to does not like the idea.
@walkerdb84

Just FYI, joysticks are used in a lot of heavy equipment such as dozers, graders, wheel loaders, and skid steers. When designed properly, they are very nice. However, this does not look like it was implemented properly. It needs to be mounted to the armrest and have a rather short throw to be comfortable and precise.

Sorry but the HP equivalence is total B.S.!! The Ryobi 42 has a 100A-70volt main fuse - If all 100 amps were used (main fuses are sized for 80% load) and we use max voltage of 80, 100x80=8,000. Now 746 watts is equal to 1 hp, so - 8,000/746 = 10.724 horse power! That is NOT REAL WORLD CONDITIONS - that is giving the MAXIMUM values in Ryobi's favor, real world would be around 8.5 horsepower - FAR CRY FROM 31 HP you are advertising. FACTS MATTER.
@bent1208

Sorry, but wattage output for a gas lawn mower with a hydraulic pump system or a geared transmission with belt driven blades comes no where near the efficiency of a direct drive electric motor with independent motors on the deck. An apples to apples comparison is only possible with measuring hp at the wheels and blade deck with a gas mower.

The absolute worst, worst, liver-worst way to cut grass is with a rotary mower, regardless of itz turning radius. ANYBODY who cares a whit for their lawn will use a reel mower -- never a "chopper" like this one!

But a reel mower have flaw. You can't used a reel mower with rocks and sticks or other stuff in your yard.
@ahastar1141

Also important to consider height of cut. At a taller height reel mowers don’t always perform their best and rotary’s shine.
