This is outstanding forethought and engineering. As for the leveling issue, just build in two small shuttle levels, perpendicular to each other, and add leveling feet (screw knobs)

Agree. Kickstarter would be a great place to get investment in a new start-up for these things. UK: we *really* need this very much too! UK has a gazillion British English books circulated over the years, with some of the largest libraries in the world, over 300 book festivals annually, and a hell of a lot of book readers/collectors accordingly.

Neat! How about a pro version with automated lifting and page turning? I know you wanted to keep it simple lol. But seriously, can't the motion of lifting the book somehow when it makes contact with the glass trigger the two cameras?

Awesome. You should consider putting this as a project on kickstarter. com I keep travelling and would love to digitize all my books and then give the physical copies away.

I just had an idea for something to help with the leveling issue you mentioned around 11:30 ... If there were a position lock mechanism that, when the book is lifted toward the glass, it released, it would solve that problem! When you bring the book back down the rollers would once again be breaked. If someone needs to manually re-position the cradle, there could be a manual break release for adjusting the position.

Wow, this looks great. One thing though, if you were to actually build it, can you make a video from start to finish on how you made it. I am not a mechanical guy, but I would build one because I actually want it and I know no stores would sell it. I would really like to have the ability to scan books though. Thanks!

Daniel Reetz / the DIYBookScanner site is, i think its $475 USD plus your cameras (they dont need to be fancy. While this sounds pricey, Reetz and that forum seems to have done a ton for this scene, so its a good way to support the likely thousands of hours of free work people have put into this.

Would be good if you can get someone making these in Australia. The postage sounds like it would be prohibitive. Thanks very much for your website.

Did you check to see what resolution is necessary for accurate OCR? I'd be tempted to use an HD webcam instead of the real camera because you'd get each page at 1080x1920 and not need the higher priced camera.

+UK distribution please. Good stuff u r doing here. NEEDED PRONTO: important for poor countries with their civil docs decaying away each year! + peeps really need to digitise our own reading matter. Best I have is a £350 Fujitsu S1500M doc scanner: best affordable machine on the market. But it's highly limited to A4/US legal size (it can do folded A3, but not always well, and too slow), and also bound items (books/mags) have to be destroyed in the process, which most of us don't want to do.

OK, I know I am late to the party, and having jumped from website to site and seen many fascinating things, are there any detailed open source plans available that one can use to build one of these? Pardon what may seem like a simplistic question, but aside from references to others building them & a kit that was available, i have been unable to find any dimensioned drawings/diagrams/ CNC programs or any other details sufficient to construct one. Any help would be Most appreciated.

Yes, it's possible to do it with 2 cameras but it takes extra time to interpolate the images. I work with OLD books that can BARELY be opened to 90°, and I've been using a similar setup. So for OCR purposes a CAMERA is quite adequate. The DYBOOKSCANNER looks like a great project, but a SCANNER it isn't. A SCANNER is a MULTI-EYED device, and each EYE records a pixel-width of a scanned image, so it takes a uniform view of any part of an image, which no SINGLE-EYE CAMERA can possibly do. :-(

Hi Keith, I've kept diybookscanner.org up and running for about 7 years now. I've personally retired from the project, but there's another guy who's selling kits and running the forum. No kickstarter required. Feel free to check it out.

This is very good and all however it requires a person that knows how to build stuff and that has tools. That leaves people without skills and poor people in underdeveloped countries out of luck. The Homer Book Scan project is a much better idea.
