Ben: Good point. Hallmarks of prior generations were humility and modesty. Most of the true Golden Age stars didn't come from a pampered upbringing - they are endured and I think were appreciative of any good breaks that came their way: Bette, Joan Crawford, Cary Grant, Charlie Chaplin, Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, Ginger Rogers, etc.
@benkleschinsky
2 жыл бұрын
@@AstralPixie I think it speaks volumes she wanted to raise her kids in the same modest environment she was raised in. You can tell she really appreciated hard work and putting in the effort for her kids to have a normal and rather strict upbringing. That generation was raised to believe you have to put in hard work, and if you do you will get rewarded. In the Golden Age of Hollywood you showed up, and if you put in the effort you would be a star. It was where dreams were made. That is not really as true anymore to the same extent. The celebrities in our culture increasingly come from more privileged and less modest backgrounds.

This is one of the most honest of her interviews that I've seen. She doesn't pull any punches nor sugar coat the facts of her life and her attitudes. I grew up with the wrong impression of her. Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte was my first film. She was old and took different "crazy old lady" roles then. Good films for what they were. Saw her on talk shows and thought she was just a tough old actress who's time had passed. Well, I was dead wrong. Finally got around to watching her classic old films, like All About Eve and Old Acquaintance, and so many more. Incredible. Saw an interview where she said she fought Hollywood for scripts and roles that only she would approve...that respected her independence, and women in general, as smart and having a brain, contrary to the stereotypes of Hollywood back then. That shows in her films. She's right up there with Katharine Hepburn. Bottom line, has so many excellent films, and was such an amazing and powerful actress. One of the all time greats!

Bette Davis was one of the greats. My favorite picture of hers was "Now, Voyager" with the handsome Paul Henreid, "Dark Victory" and one where she really shined in compassion and great love story with Charles Boyer in "All This And Heaven Too" ~ if you haven't seen that one I'd highly recommend it. It's lovely.

Who's John Crawford? A basement actor that we don't know of?

“Sharper than a tigers tooth is to have a thankless child!” Bette gave her so much, a beautiful wedding, even though she thought BD was to young at 17 years old. Bette Davis was an excellent, beautiful actress! RIP

@@susanmulvey6311 This surprises me so much that a stubborn and strong Bette would cave to the whim of a 16 year old marrying a dirty old man!

LOVE Bette Davis - what a strong spirit of a lady! And this was back when we had real journalism. Gone are THOSE days!
