The Lightning Temple (The Gerudo section in general) is my favorite part of the whole game. The bewilderment I felt when I saw Gerudo Town in complete disrepair with gibdos roaming the streets was something else. It wasn't difficult or anything just a giant "wtf" moment for me and figuring out a way to make it to safety underground was even more intriguing to me. The temple itself was also fun. I don't think it is as good as WW's earth temple, but it was a nice change of pace from the other dungeons that just felt like over bloated shrines. Riju actually feeling like her own person made the temple feel more real than a place like the Fire Temple, where Yunobo would just teleport to where you were. The Wind Temple is my favorite aesthetically. A giant ark in the middle of a cyclone that you actively make your way up towards surrounded by numerous little skyships was really awesome to me. It didn't matter that the dungeon was really simple, as long as I had fun, it was worthwhile to me. Also, Colgera was a really fun fight, I especially love the fact that in his second phase he just uppercuts you out of nowhere just to give you a bit of a shock. I have nothing to say about the Water or Fire Temples. Just..... they are temples.

That's simply because the game is open and based on the OG Zelda where the dungeons were labyrinths as opposed to linear puzzle solving. You can't make a linear dungeon based on an item like a hookshot in a game where you could literally skip any puzzle by climbing or ascending. The best you can ask is an in-between, which I think they accomplished in Totk. I'm not saying they're better than traditional dungeons but they're also not worse any any means. It's simply a different approach. Not being like Ocarina of Time is not a bad thing in itself. Wow, I had a very different reaction to the Water Temple (coming from the perpsective of a Zelda fan for 20+ years). It had some of my favorite music in a Zelda game, and while I didn't find the puzzles challenging, I also don't really find Zelda puzzles so much "challenging" in general, I just want them to be fun and satisfying to complete mechanically, which I felt these were. I also found it cool how design-wise, it resembled the Zora's domain itself, and how the concept of low-gravity subverted the usual swimming mechanics by having you effectively "swim" through the air. I dunno, I found it more creative and thought it had more of a vibe than quite a few of the dungeons in the series even if it was on the shorter side. It wasn't my favorite, but I wouldn't have singled it out as the weakest in the game or the series, and compared to past water dungeons, I thought it was one of the more pleasant ones.

I still think that there should've been a challenge like the one you use to acquire the main skyland paraglider, where [SPOILER] You meet that robot at the top of the Temple of Time, and he tells you you should light the three bonfires without touching the ground, and sure, you can accomplish it with a flying machine or whatever, but you can also swim up the tiny waterfall islands that appear. It would be so damn cool if you would have to activate some terminals, without touching the ground, because it was full of toxic sludge and you would die if you touched it, then after activating the terminals, only then, the low gravity would activate, which would, in turn, make the sludge partially go away, would have been a nice addition to it, and would make much more extensive use of the repaired Zora breastplate.

I just thought getting the special zonai armor and going to the sky and then to the depths was a really cool overall mission that encompassed almost every fun facet of Totk. Getting to the wind temple and the wind temple boss was amazing, but the dungeon itself really sucked. And water temple was kinda cool to get to and the anti grav was exciting for a short while but other than that it was really lame and the water temple boss was a pain in the ass. Cool design though! Nothing wrong with that but I don't get why people treat Ocarina of Time as the ORIGINAL Zelda. I love the game but again, got sick of every Zelda being OOT with a boat, OOT with a wold, OOT with a bird and so on. Zelda OOT is not the only Zelda that matters and I'm glad they went back to the origins and it's obvious that they're going to keep making classic 2D/3D Zelda games. I had no idea there was a temple up there. I had no idea how the dungeon system was going to be in this game, as this was my first dungeon. Unfortunately, it didn’t let me activate the terminal of the dungeon. So I had to go to Rito village and set up the whole quest thing. After that, I had to reclimb the whole thing up to the wind temple, because fast travelling to a nearby shrine did not make Tulin follow me. It was kind of frustrating that a game that allows this much freedom didn’t allow me to activate the temple after climbing all of that. @@natesamadhi33 That made the story through the "4 phenomenons" part an outright chore for me. Just because you can do them in any order doesn't mean you can't make them different from each other, like how the "tear" memories are different from each other. It was annoying knowing each story would be exactly the same, and it made each sage feel like a copy/paste and not a character. It's especially disappointing coming from other JRPGs like Tales where the story is the main dish and each character has like 15 hours of screen time to really get to know them. But I'm biased, because I love a good story more than good gameplay. Even good gameplay gets repetitive for me once I feel like I've mastered enough of it. I’ll preface this by saying this was a really interesting and well made video, and I do agree with most of your points. However, I do disagree with you on the idea that they weren’t quite large enough. Personally I think it’s reasonable to call the buildup to each dungeon a part of the Dungeon itself, complete with unique areas, sequences, and unique minibosses only fought then. Through that lense the actual “dungeon” part being so short makes a lot more sense, because you did a ton of Dungeoning already just getting there. Like, with the Water Temple not only is there the four puzzles at the Dungeon proper but there’s the section underneath the lake, and then the wellspring islands ascent which take a not insignificant amount of time and implement most of the mechanics you’ll find there. Basically the way I see, the Temples are just the second act of a much larger Dungeons that are spread across the open world itself, so judging those in a vacuum is a little unfair imo.

Yeah I pretty much agree with all the points you made. The water temple feels extremely rushed compared to the other 3, both in design and length, it's short, doesnt really make good use of low gravity or the sludge / water, and feels the least connected to the world as a real place instead of just random 4 floating islands.
@BowlerSSF2

That being said, I honestly really enjoyed the other 3 dungeons. I understand why people felt the puzzles weren't as challenging, and I think part of it is that due to the nature of the game giving you so much freedom, making more complex puzzles seems to be more about restricting what the player can do. Big part of why they dont even allow zonai stuff to be spawned in shrines, the freedom kidna breaks a lot of the puzzle aspects of dungeons, which I dont mind as much.

Same here. My biggest gripe with the water temple is that they could’ve easily swapped the locations where the Sky Island section could be the lead up and the Ancient Zora WaterWork would be the actual dungeon. At the very least it would be much more aesthetically pleasing

I think the focus here is core game mechanics. The core emphasis is player choice in botw and totk. It's more Sandbox like and because of this the dungeons have to be built around these mechanics. This is in direct contrast to the more linear/restrained core mechanics of previous 3d Zelda games. You said it yourself. You brute forced your way through the fire dungeon. And that is perfectly valid because the game is built around that. But you won't see something like that in any of the other Zelda games with the exceptions of a few puzzles here and there. The past 3d Zelda games can go wild with their dungeons because each of them are built around unique mechanics that are found only in those dungeons. Not that one is better than the other but I agree with you that I preferred the old Zelda Dungeon design, even though I haven't played totk yet. I'm pretty sure I left a similar comment on your video about Zelda moving on from its past 3d game design. This is partially why even though I like the new direction of Zelda I hope they don't completely abandon the old design. Great Video 👍

You are right. Link needs a limiting factor inside dungeons so it could be closer to traditional dungeons. The problem is in fact the complete freedom. Which is why it is hard to design a dungeon when there is no concrete path to take. Interestingly the game already has spaces that limit links abilities and that is the shrines. These spaces are separate from the overworld, there is no use for freedom since it is an enclosed space. I think that is why the thunder temple is also the best temple. It is more confined and separates link from the outside world. The Zelda team knows that they need to limit link sometimes, they should apply it to dungeons and create a better balance between open world and linearity.

But that freedom is exactly what most people (not all) who played BotW and TotK want. That's the big appeal of the games. People LOVE that they can tackle the puzzles in their own unique way. The one thing I disagree with is that these dungeons are worse than every dugeon in the rest of the franchise. I agree that this isn't zelda at it's best, but there are a lot of clasic zelda dungeons that are tedious, like oracle jabu jabu, and oot jabu jabu, are bland like twilight princess's forest temple, or are braindead like honestly most of wind waker's dungeons(still love the aestetics, but we've got a lot of that here).

Having played all the 3d Zeldas except Skyward sword, They were all braindead easy anyway. The only dungeons that were "Hard" in my opinion, and that took a while, was majoras mask. (They actually get you to use previous dungeon items too, in some cases) That game definitely didn't hold your hand! and it's why it was my favourite Zelda game before TOTK :D __ TP is probably the biggest offender here, it had the best looking dungeons and bosses. but it was braindead easy, and midna solved a lot of puzzles for you. (From what i've watched, Fi does the same thing in Skyward) gameplay wise, i just don't enjoy them that much. i think it really is just nostalgia mostly. ___ The TOTK ones, they nailed the theme of it. While the pollution of the Zora is a great hook...you spend your whole first few missions running around uncovering the "mystery" of how to get to the temple, which felt more like busy work to me. (Especially since a certain 5th temple does this mystery lead up way better.) Going up to the low gravity islands is super cool, especially if its your first time, but can swiftly get soured when you're trying to figure out these puzzles and you're jumping too high or too far. Nothing about the dungeon feels exceptional in comparison to the others either. Its not an actual trap filled temple like gerudo. It wasn't this cool lead up like the Rito, and not in the depth like the Gorons. And it's boss...isn't bad, but is absolutely lesser than the others. I don't mind the old sages telling the Imprisoning War story too much, but I feel like they could've done a lot more with their perspectives of the war to make us actually care about them as characters instead of just one-off plot devices. In BoTW we at least get to experience memories with the champions and get a glimpse at their personalities, so it'd be cool if we saw something like that with the sages that reflects the main characters' dilemmas throughout ToTK's story. This is sorta what I came up with while I was playing the game: Wind Sage: Ganondorf's army kills his family post Demon King-ification, and in a fit of rage he attacks Ganondorf on his own during the final showdown instead of cooperating with his fellow sages. Looking back at how they all almost died, he sees the error in his recklessness and encourages Tulin to be wiser before giving him his secret stone. Lightning Sage: Before she became a sage, she led a rebellion against Ganondorf because of his tyrannical chokehold over the Gerudo. This fails because Ganondorf is Ganondorf, and it's only through finding sanctuary in Rauru's mercy that she survives her injuries. When she faces Ganon again with the sages, he mocks her for being a coward/traitor and takes advantage of her resulting anger and self-doubt. Lightning Sage later assures Riju that her courage in fighting alongside Link actually led the Gerudo towards a better future, and tells her she's proud that the tribe is now in good hands before giving her the stone. Fire Sage: Though his position as a sage made him much wiser than the rest of his kind, he couldn't get over his culturally-ingrained need to become the strongest to honor his ancestors' memory. This leads to him trying to overwhelm Ganondorf with might alone, his attempts at doing so becoming sloppier the more desperate he became. Reflecting on the experience made him realize the innate strength of strategy and wit, which he relays to Yunobo before giving him the stone. Water Sage: Kind of a repeat of Wind Sage's backstory with the dead family, except her fighting spirit dwindles the more Ganondorf uses her grief as a distraction. She later tells Sidon that while grief is natural in the face of death's inevitability, it's the decision to accept that loss and move on towards a brighter future that matters most. Before giving him the stone, she tells Sidon that she (and Mipha) are proud of him. I pretty much came up with these on the spot, so sorry if they sound like cheesy fanfiction lmao

The thing is with these dungeons is they had far more of the focus on the quests themselves then the dungeon. The Water temple is painfully short but it didn’t bother me simply because having to solve several mysteries and slowly piecing together what I have to do was done perfectly for that quest, so I wasn’t overly bothered when the dungeon was just short. The Thunder Temple did disappoint me but it was more because it was the first dungeon I did so I expected more. The storyline around was amazing, I remember walking into Gerudo town and seeing that it’s destroyed and nobodies there filling me with such dread and it had me invested in trying to kill the Gibdoes. The Wind Temple I kinda fucked over for myself because I found it before I got to Rito Village. I accidentally stumbled into it(funny thing is the same thing happened with the Spirit Temple, I randomly found it on my travels far before the game actually tells you). The Fire Temple though, I fucking loved the Fire Temple in this game. It’s design is amazing, the puzzles are fun, and it doesn’t just feel like it’s entirely just “do the terminals”, it has an emphasis on how you move in the dungeon with the mine cart system. I loved piecing together which track connects into one another and figuring out where exactly I need to go. It took advantage over the one thing BOTW and TOTK have over other Zelda’s, options in terms of where you can leave and enter the dungeon and different perspectives in said dungeon. Overall I thought they were average, the wind and thunder temples didn’t make much of an impression, the water temple sucked but the quest to get there was amazing, and the fire temple was peak.

Yeah nah, Water temple sucked complete dogass. Fire temple had so much potential, but ultimately fell short in my opinion. Wind temple was just fine, and it's a no-brainer that the Lightning temple is the best. But tbh Spirit temple (construct factory) was badass as well, the only temple that even made me consider dethroning lightning. Idk why you choose to not count it as a dungeon.

They are just okay for me. I still think Twilight Princess has some of the best dungeon designs ever, but Stone Tower from Majoras Mask is my favorite dungeon ever.

I agree with everything in this video, though I have to mention my biggest disappointment in this game (apart from that I love everything) when I stumbled across that.. other one, I got so hyped and felt really blueballed afterwards

I wouldn't go so far as to say the best dungeon in TotK is still worse than the worst dungeon in any pre-BotW games, because there have been a few _pretty bad_ dungeons over the course of the series history. Temple of the Ocean King and City in the Sky immediately jump to mind. It also goes without saying that the dungeons in Zelda 1 are even more simplistic than the Divine Beasts (can't really fault it because of the hardware, but still). That said, they definitely didn't live up to the series' pedigree. That's not to say they're bad (they're actually pretty good), but that the series' pedigree is so damn high. Majora's Mask and Skyward Sword particularly have some of the greatest level design and puzzle-solving of all time. Personally, I'd place TotK's dungeon at about the same level as ALttP's; fun overall, but nothing spectacular.

i agree that these temples are better but not on the level of previous games. but i think in puzzle design these dungeons have best puzzles probably some puzzle box dungeon can outrun them like water temple from ocarina but still their moment to moment puzzles are still not on this level. now, i know some people will say these dungeon's puzzle are not that great and complex but the truth is zelda dungeons rely on atmosphere and feelings. infact most of dungeons in 3d games handguided to make you go certain path with even kind of zero puzzle (they are just things to do without any thinking). that's not a bad thing. totk puzzles are not complex but you had to think little bit to solve them though. that's enough to make them good puzzles.

That’s why I got the venn diagram at the beginning. There’s overlap, but for the most part they’re different camps. I have friends who love the botw style and aren’t fond of other Zelda games and I have friends who love Zelda but hate the botw style

I wished they incorporated the low gravity mechanic or sidon's ability more into the Water temple, like there could be a switch behind bars that you can't shoot or hit with your weapons, but Sidon's ability can travel through it and hit it, or you could reverse the gravity to make the waters travel faster and make something move idk. The other temples suffer from underutilizing the companions too, but the Water temple stands out as the worst one.

Now I've only completed the lightning and water temples, and yes I too really enjoyed the lightning temple, it felt like I was doing the spirit temple from OoT, before going to the water temple I attempted to try and fight Ganondorf and ended up fighting the other 3 bosses, they were nowhere as enjoyable and difficult as Queen Gibdo, although he's right about the water temple, it's kinda disappointing because it's so quick and easy, there's no interesting puzzles to it and I was done with it in like 20-30 minutes

You're rating the water temple as a standalone level but from the developer's standpoint the buildup to it is part of it and the temple itself the climax. If you spent any more time with Zora-related content it might've seemed like it's dragging on or that it's getting special treatment over the other races.

I honestly like this new direction of dungeons now, it was bad in botw because it was just kinda samey, only criticism for future games is to make them a bit longer and throw in a mini boss.

I basically said this in the last video. I should’ve waited a min and commented that on this video lol. Anyway banger vid EDIT: I remember I had this funny moment in the fire temple. I put a cart incorrectly on the rail and it end up flying off when I activated the fan. And on your note of how things could just brute forces thru, used the camera function and walked on the rail beams lol.

I think The Spirit Temple/Construct Factory should totally be counted as a dungeon. Sure, the Construct Factory isn’t officially a Temple, and it doesn’t have a map, but the Spirit Temple that follows it is JUST the boss, and the Construct Factory has the exact same structure as all of the other temples; Start the dungeon at a central location, be told what 4/5 things you need to activate to progress, and go off and do puzzles in order to collect those things.

I might sound stupid saying this. But I enjoyed the Divine Beasts as “dungeons”. Since they all had the same methods to the boss, it wasn’t as annoying as learning the layout of a whole new dungeon map. The Blight battles also helped cement how powerful and massive a threat Calamity Ganon is compared to “hide in his cave” TotK Ganon They can be seen as parts of himself, meaning he effortlessly took down the Champions BY HIMSELF. The boss fights in TotK feel reused in one way or another. I legit believed the Fire Temple boss was going to be the one eyed scorpion thing. Also, why are Gibdo suddenly acting/treated like a hive mind of sand moths??

To be fair to Nintendo merging the new open world style and philosophy with traditional style dungeons is going to take some trial and error.

Surprised you were more middling on the Fire Temple considering it did the Wind Waker thing with its companion that you wished the Lightning Temple did. Just navigating the temple requires use of Yunobo to change mine cart tracks and figuring out proper angles or ramps to get him to break open new areas. The most you use a companion in their temple in the game.

I liked the Gohma bossfight the most because it was so open to how you wanted to defeat it, plus you could use most of your abilities in the fight. I really wish the Ganondorf fight made use of your hand abilities somehow.

They really need to ditch the sprawling open world or at least design it with more limitations and bottlenecking in mind.
