Because Better Call Saul, in my opinion, overall i think its better than The Wire and Sopranos and the first four seasons of GOTs, which are all generally considered three of the best written and produced TV shows of all time. And notice im not putting Breaking Bad on that list either, BB was maybe a tier below those, at best. When Manuel Varga says to Mike, "You gangsters and your "justice." You're all the same," it's important that he's saying it in Spanish. Mike had just said "I'm sorry, my Spanish ... justicia, justice," because he and Manuel really are speaking two different languages, not just the difference between Spanish and English, but more importantly that Manual is speaking of a way of living as an honorable, righteous, and decent human being that Mike just doesn't understand. Brilliant writing and I'm glad Manuel Varga is the counterpoint to all the terrible things we see happen in both BCS and BB. Manuel Varga is the hardworking immigrant who does the right thing and lives life the right way without shortcuts while all around him are people scamming each other and cutting corners. Manuel Varga may be the one behind the fence, but he's the only one who is truly free because he can actually sleep at night.

I don't think the scene with Kim and Howard's wife showed viewers who she "really was." I took it as showing to what terrible lengths she would go to protect Jimmy (including killing Gus.) Jimmy was getting uncharacteristically flustered under Howard's wife's questioning and Kim stepped in to shut it down. She's smarter than Jimmy & could possibly be an even better con than him if she followed that path. Deep down she IS a good and ethical person, which is why she gave up her law license and split from Jimmy. She was raised by a mother who was a female Jimmy. She was drawn to familiar dysfunction. Most attorneys don't take their oaths and ethical requirements seriously, sadly. Kim did and punished herself for violating them. Jimmy is in his core a grifter, which is why he didn't feel the shame and guilt that Kim did. Instead he leaned harder into being an unethical lawyer. He's fun to watch but ultimately not a good person.

@@sitori663 I don't agree at all. Kim isn't more ethical than jimmy, at least not in this season . Yes, the goodbye kiss in the parking garage where we first saw them together… beautiful. Now that we established in the last episode that they really do unequivocally, deeply love each other (Jimmy willing to die for Kim, Kim willing to kill for Jimmy), Kim realises she must leave, tearing Jimmy’s heart and soul out and taking them with her, and in response Jimmy snaps to full Saul. I can imagine him burying the pain of losing Kim in a flurry of furious activity. The Sandpiper money comes in and he immediately blows it on the mini-mansion, Cadillac, clothes, all the hideous furnishings. Fills his nights with sex workers (he wouldn’t ever go on a normal date, because no one could ever replace Kim) and his days with work, work, work.

@@AlexPenna55 yes there are loose ends to tie up there. There are a lot of people in Kim’s professional life who are going to be shocked by her behaviour. How did she explain away missing the meeting with Cliff Main about the pro-bono practice just before Howard apparently killed himself? And then a day or two after his memorial, she doesn’t just quit her job, but her entire profession, and leaves her marriage. I guess she could say she was having a mental health crisis following Howard’s suicide, and it triggered her to completely reassess her life, and that her feelings about law and her marriage had been brewing for a while.

That abrupt transition before we finally see Saul Goodman is probably my most favourite moment of the whole series! I was always scared to see how they handle that but my god that was perfect! Even though it was done so abruptly it felt absolutely earned! I feel like adding that transition helps a lot and adds more depth and tragedy to the character of Saul Goodman. Ofcourse a montage would have been good on how he became Saul Goodman it would have funny, cinematic and a lot of other things but never tragic. So adding that abrupt transition was the key for me, it's like we are not even starting to process their break up yet and *BOOM* there is this transition that fast forwards the timeline. Felt like a gut punch! When I started watching BCS I wanted Jimmy to become Saul by the end of Season 1 but now that we are finally here after 59 Amazing Episodes of Character development I miss Jimmy McGill! These writers man! Honest to god the absolute best in the business! (Also a side bar, Ms. Wexler will definitely return)

One of the most tragic things for me is how, on top of the wreckage Kim and Jimmy caused and the tragedy that ensued, the money for Sandpiper was not used to help the down-trodden. That mansion was paid for by the settlement. And Kim was lying to herself anyway. They already had that duffel bag full of cash from the Twins that she could've used to open her own law firm for the poor. They told themselves they were scamming Howard to get the Sandpiper money, but in the end, it really was just for the "fun" of it. As the title said, it's all fun and games until someone gets hurt.

Good point. In fact throughout the majority of BCS they're pretty well to do on the cash front. I think there is a few times Jimmy had to struggle, but after bagman they were fairly well set. That was the perplexing thing to me, was all the opportunity that they had. The security that they had too. And they just seem to turn away from it at every step. Turning down incredible career potential for a con that could get them in a boatload of trouble. Normal people don't do this. Yes it's all fun and games. And in the end Kim realized this and took ownership rather than attempted to rationalize like so many other characters in this universe do.

A running theme of Better Call Saul is Jimmy's lack of self-reflection. Chuck, Howard warned him about who he really is. Now Kim has too, and she knows she is also bad. Now it's left for Jimmy to come to terms with who he is. Like Peter Gould said, is there any chance of redemption for Jimmy? We'll find out.

Not just his lack of self-reflection, but the fact his self-reflection doesn't even matter. He worked so hard to be an honest lawyer and earn Chuck's respect, only to have it confirmed he'd never be anything more than Slippin' Jimmy to his brother. Now with Kim he was doing a bad thing for, ultimately, the right reasons before Lalo really blew it up. Kim's self-reflection is that they're too dangerous to stay together. The two prominent times Jimmy has tried to do right (even if the Howard part was wrong) has blown up in his face spectacularly. Why bother, when going full Slippin' Jimmy is so much easier.

I think it shows their early influences as well. Jimmy always wanted the respect and love of his brother, who never saw him as anything but a con. Chuck was as honest and straight as they come. Jimmy leans into the truth with Howard's widow. Kim was the honest one in her youth with an emotionally neglectful scammer of a mother. Yeah. And there was no logic to what they were doing to Howard. He himself put it (right before he was murdered), that it was just something they got off on. I do desperately hope that one episode, the feds will find a tape of either Kim or Jimmy confessing about the whole prank they did on Howard, so at least his reputation can be repaired and not go out as some dude high on cocaine. Or at least they will find his body (which will still be buried under the now-burned superlab), which would vindicate the story that he did not get high and went into the ocean. I’ve been seeing some hate for the Gus wine scene but I loved it. It’s the first time in either show we get to see Gus be a normal person and not be playing some game or worrying about the Cartel. Jimmy telling Kim that one day they’ll wake up and realize they didn’t think of Howard all day was the theme of this episode. Every major character has had some moment they’ll never be able to go a whole day without thinking about. Mike can’t forget what happened to Nacho. Kim can’t forget Howard’s murder. Jimmy can’t forget Kim leaving. Gus can’t forget Max’s murder. I think this was the purpose of the Gus scene. Gus has never had that moment of realizing he hadn’t thought about Max all day, and I think he almost did in that scene. He was content and enjoying himself for a brief moment until he snapped back into reality and remembered he still had work to do. I think this makes Gus more of a tragic character than some realize. He spent his whole life fixated on revenge and never allowed real happiness or love to return to his life. That abrupt time jump at the end of the episode was masterfully done. I thought of it almost like a gunshot killing the character of Jimmy McGill. Comes out of nowhere and in an instant. It’s all Saul now. Loved this episode. No clue where the last 4 could go, all I know is this isn’t the last we’ll see of Kim.

They literally spent a good couple of minutes on the wine scene and I think its meaning is significant. Before in the episode, when visiting Don Eladio, Gus looks into the pool and remembers what has happen: to his (boy)friend Max. The wine scene definitely gave the proof that Gus is gay and increased the chance of Max being his boyfriend. His romantic interaction with the waiter did not hold for long, and in my opinion also because of the fact that Gus still wants to stay loyal to Max. Gus' loyalty is not restricted to avoiding extended romantic, it also involves on getting revenge on what the cartel did to Max. It's in this very wine scene where Gus already plans on how to hit Don Eladio - with a bottle of liquor. The waiter gave Gus a glass of wine from the open bottle as a gift and he drank it. It could be poisoned, but he did not lose a thought about it. When the waiter then said that Gus should wait for the other bottle which they cannot open but the mere view at that bottle would mesmerize him, he more and more valued a precious bottle of liquor as a present - and as a rather unnoticeable way to betray somebody. You can see it in his eyes before he decides to leave the bar: the thoughts on his past, the cartel, the wine itself, betrayal, trust, loyalty... And eventually also the brilliant idea on how to kill his enemy in Breaking Bad.

I think that he will allow himself to be with other men when max is revenged. jimmy says earlier In the episode; at some point you'll wake up and not think about "it". but gus doesn't allow himself to stop thinking about it until max is revenged. but he forgot it. for a couple minutes he talks romantically to this guy and he doesn't think about max. until the waiter says that the wine has a bloody taste. this reminds him of max death.

Catch 22 for Jimmy... Kim said they would have broke up if they didn't do the Howard scheme and they broke up because they did the Howard scheme. It is a lot easier to see how Jimmy becomes Saul after hearing something like that. It didn't matter what he did to try and make Kim happy, she would have left in the end. What a helpless feeling that would sit with any person for years, and maybe the rest of their life.

This episode felt like it was the ending of BCS, and now that we finally got to the breaking bad timeline we can see how brilliant the writting of this show really is and how watching BB again will never be the same. Kim maybe, because she gets out of the game, but I'm not entirely sure Jimmy deserves it. He's in this mess because unlike her, he refused to acknowledge how his choices impact people, continued on with the Saul persona, and willingly got into bed with a meth kingpin. Plus we see on numerous occasions him exploiting horrific tragedies so he can sue companies, not to put families at peace, but to make money. The worst part about this is, I too still wish they could get back together. The two shows have this way of making us wish for the best, for the worst of characters.

As much as we have always seen Jimmy as 'the bad guy' -- Kim's story this season has been showing us WHY she loves him -- they are more alike than even Jimmy knows. Kim's dark childhood life with her mother -- the meaning of her neckless and earrings... all stuff we learned but Jimmy did not. Kim did not love Jimmy despite his bad behaviour -- she loved him because of it and it freed her to embrace her own darker impulses. By loving him, Kim came to hate herself and her own hypocrisy. Having gone through a similar breakup in the past myself, I can fully understand why Jimmy decided to double down and become Saul Goodman completely. Saul Goodman is Jimmy's coping mechanism, as Saul, he does not have to face the sadness, despair and loneliness he had felt after losing everyone who was ever close to him. I do hope Jimmy gets at least a neutral ending if not a good one. He had done terrible things, true, but the years he had spent living as Saul Goodman, and subsequently Gene, in my opinion, had already served as his personal purgatory and prison sentence. I hope he can find peace of mind one day.

The time jump was devastatingly effective. It showed that without Kim, nothing matters. That we leapt into such a garish and hollow life served to underscore just how lost Jimmy is without her. That’s one way to watch it. I chose to see it as an incredible scene Designed to present a character action that we would never suspect. As far as talking to the waiter, that’s clearly adds sexual tension to the deal, Allowing him to remember Max, just as he did at Don Eladio’s when he stood above the water at the spot where Max had died. These writers are truly skilled representing their story on many levels simultaneously. For example, many fans react solely to the continuation of the story, the “errors” the “gotchas” they can accumulate. So they have to provide a gripping story for them. Yet, they also are creating art. The incredible use of lighting, music, character development, pop-culture allusions and montage is without compare in television writing (just shy some of the other work from the show producers another series). It has been said that one of the great abilities of the Uber-actor is their ability to create something that we see, yet don’t think that we’re looking at the actor, but rather see the particular character they play.

It reminded me of when Casper tells Mike that Werner was worth 50 of him (or whatever the number was) - it cut to the quick. Mike's smart enough to know it too. That's the worst place to be - someone smart enough to realise that they're a hypocrite. Kim realised it too but was smart enough to get out of there. We all wanted a happy ending for Kim but the sad reality of the Gilliverse is that by this point this is the best outcome available to her. I'm sure we'll see her again.

This episode depressed me. 😂 It was amazing as usual. The scene with Howard’s wife at the wake was brutal.

Can I just say what a great job Pete does with breaking this show down to its essential elements, then backs up and shows the broader view of what everything means and relates to in the overall scheme of the BB story. Excellent job, Pete.

Brilliant episode and another brilliant recap, Pete. One thing I also loved was the matchup of Giancarlo Esposito as Gus and Reed Diamond as the sommelier, as both actors were in the great 1990s series Homicide: Life on the Street, a precursor to The Wire. I'm not sure if they had any episodes together (Reed Diamond may have left before Esposito joined), but it's nice to see them both here, feels like a nod to those of us old enough to have been around for that earlier legendary and treasured show.

So glad someone else noticed this. I think they may have crossed over briefly in the episode Kellerman PI but I might be wrong. The ghost of Yaphet Kotto was watching over them both in that great wine scene :)
