I enjoyed the Cal era. UK was the most relevant school in CBB, loaded with talent, he was a renegade. But, now that the bandaid has been pulled off.....MY GOD DO I FEEL FREED. The program has been returned to the fans, not have the program held over our head with 'if you dont like what we're doing, enjoy life without NBA allstars and Drake' mindset. Well that will be missed, but how exciting is it to have a coach that is considered and X's & O's guy, uses Analytics, will bring in coaches who are experts at putting together a modern scouting report, Instead of selling the NBA dream, he can mentor his players with stories about his days in the NBA. The dude played for Larry Bird, set screens for guys like Ray Allen, Reggie Miller, Glenn Robinson. Pope will be present on Campus during those June-August vital workouts. Cal lived in New Jersey during the off season and only flew into Lexington when needed and left the summer stuff 90% to the assistants who werent the most motivated and hungry guys in college basketball. Cal marketed 'players first' but Pope will be more player friendly when it's actually analyzed.

I enjoyed the Cal era for years, but it went sour. It reminds me of watching a TV show. As long as it's episodes you haven's seen, it feels great, but when the re-runs start, it's less fun, and by the time you hear the same thing for the fourth or fifth time, you just want to find another show.

Maybe it's because of all the craziness in college basketball, but all the traditional Blue Bloods except Kansas now have legacy hires as HC. I find that interesting. I see it as circling the wagons to protect their culture and traditions in an era when those are being threatened by change. In UK's case specifically, it was about renewal to bring back in the tens of thousands of disgruntled fans who stopped watching because of Cal hijacking the program for his own purposes. Some of the disgruntled were former players, too. That was the purpose for having them on Pope's bus. It was to bring them home again.

Assuming Cal gets all of the Key UK guys available , BigZ, Wagner, Fland & Quaintance they will definity be talented. Will Theiro follow? He was in the portal before Cal quit. They will have to find shooting cause that core might not clear 30% from three. BigZ has a beautiful jumper, Fland can shoot but he's a freshman, so those are two pieces but Knox, Richmond are typical Cal players who cant shoot, arent really skilled but are long an athletic. Will they be Hamidou Diallo/ Chris Livingstons that you'll forget when they bolt for the G league in a year or will the Chicken internment camp guy be able to pay them enough to stick around 3-4 years to develop from athletes into skilled basketball players. That was alway an issue with Cal. Wasting 12 months on a 1&D that was a developmental player. It worked great when it was AD, Wall, KAT, Sheppard, but not so good for so many others.

Acting like a coach who has never won a tournament game knows roster construction better than a HoF coach is silly. There is zero doubt Arkansas is better than UK this year. I don’t expect a second weekend this year. I expect this will get ugly within 2-3 years. Passion isn’t going to get the best players. If Kentucky was more talent rich it might be different.
