I need your help and opinion. I'm doing my very first bathroom remodel. My house is older and the bathroom appears to be framed with 2x2 so Im limited on space in the wall cavity. Should I go with a 250 foam board, 2" thick which will only give me a R value of 10 or should I go with mineral or fiberglass and add to the framing to give the wall a modern 2x4 space? I live in Indiana and this wall was poorly insulated anyways. I think anything I do will be an upgrade.

Sounds like the old sears home kits. I bought a house like that once for a flip. Was totally shocked that the walls were that thin. I ended up framing in places like the kitchen and bathroom and used rock wool. Then everywhere else I just used the pink stuff. Used 1/2” foam outside too since I added new siding too. It would probably be best to just frame out all walls so you can get better insulation value. Foam is expensive and doesn’t add much

@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher it's very strange. I bought the house off family and it house estimated for double so I wasn't going to pass. I looked around my town prior to buying and all the houses, even worse than mine were 200k plus. It's about 2000 ft w 2 car attached garage. I believe it was built in the late 60s or early 70s so not sure what's up with this exterior wall

Do you add any plastic/vapor barrier over the mineral wool or do you drywall right over top. Great tips!!

That’s a good question. And a tough one to answer. I personally do not install plastic vapor barriers around here in Pittsburgh. I see more issues with them than not. Just like the paper face insulation molding. Most of the time the exterior of house is wrapped with tyveck or foam board is installed and sealed at seams.this causes a vapor lock between plastic barrier if you install one.

@BathroomRemodelingTeacher how is it a vapor lock, house wrap is water permeable allowing water vapor to pass through.

Would I be able to install cement boards on top? Or would I need to add plastic wrap before?

I typically do not do vapor barriers inside since most of the time there is one on the outside of house (Tyvek or foam board) and a vapor barrier inside just locks vapor in wall cavity and can cause moisture problems. And if you are using cement board, I highly recommend adding a liquid waterproofing to it (hydroban , aqua defense) 👍
