Laura, I ran all over town and nearby towns checking with my local garden centers, feed and seeds and farm supply stores (6 different establishments) and I was only able to find 1 variety of hardneck seed garlic at my local garden center. It seems to be soo rare to find the type of looses bulk seed like you all provide at Andrews seed. Would y’all ever be entertaining the idea of selling your excess cloves that you grow in your garden plot? Picture this! How wonderful would it be to have the luxury of watching your farmer ( you) buy her seed garlic from her family, watch her sew it and get updates on it through the season when she can and then watch her harvest it, and then purchase it and give back to her family for it?? Am I just dreaming too much here? Let me know your thoughts!

Every year I plan on planting garlic and every year I forget to do it. By the time I think of it everyone is out of garlic. Your cat playfully attacking your arm while you plant is so cute. That is something our cat does. She also likes to run into a bed that I just placed all the bulbs out on top of the soil to be planted, knock them all around, and then run out. She is so crazy.

I just put mine in the ground last Sunday. Upstate New York weather was crazy this fall! 70’s one day and 20’s the next. Last year, I planted Viola Francais and while the harvest was just okay with small bulbs (first time planting garlic), the flavor is amazing. This year, I planted Chesnock Red, and I’ll see how that goes. I used your method of mulched leaf top dress with a dose of blood meal. Thanks for the tips!

Do you find the Farmers Garden Almanac helpful when you plant and for gauging the seasons? My grandad followed bug and bird changes, along with the Almanac. He always had a beautiful garden and fed most of the neighborhood and family all my life. Until he died, he gardened. My grandmother did flowers and he did vegetables. Nice memories. Thank you for reminding me! I've been wanting to plant garlic for several years and I always forget to until it's too late! Maybe I will get that accomplished this year. I can't believe how similar your weather up there is to our wacky weather (I call it bi- polar) here in the Texas Panhandle. Stay warm or cool, depending on the day. Happy gardening to you and all of us on your channel!

Marian Kay Tx panhandle! Are you zone 5? I would think warmer than eastern Oregon. Weather is soooo weird this year. We have had snow since Sept. 29....(26 inches) here in central Montana....I would normally do what Laura is doing in Oct. NOT this year!
@mariankay6482
4 жыл бұрын
@@sarahr2498 Hi Sarah. Well, we are a zone 7b. I know they are a zone 5 but I was commenting about the way it goes back and forth from warm to cold. We have already had a snow and another round of a freezing mix with temps in the lower 20s. 3 days ago our high was 34 and yesterday and today it's been in the upper 70s! Tomorrow it starts to cool off again. We also don't get a lot of moisture and it's even less, normally, in the winter months. I saw where y'all got hammered early in October, wasn't it? See, almost everytime y'all have a cold front, they come down through Colo and come into the Texas Panhandle region. It all depends on the jet stream. Sometimes it holds north of us but usually we get what y'all get but less moisture and not quite as cold! We can get down to zero and below. We also get up over 100 normally in the summer. These are the comparisons I was making to the eastern Oregon area and ours. They are high desert, I think, and we are the high plains. Our elevation here is over 3750 so we absolutely have all 4 seasons and we get the down slope winds off the mountains in New Mexico and Colo. so it's really windy here. Windier than almost anywhere in the country! 15 to 20 mph is not uncommon and a day without any kind of a breeze is almost unheard of! Ha! There are not many trees here on the plains. It's mostly flat. It's great for cattle here and to the north and lots of farming to the south. We have some oil and several different industries that support other types of revenue for the area. Now, you know the basics of the Panhandle. Col. Charles Goodnight lived in the Panhandle down in Palo Duro Canyon. It's a pretty western area. The Prairie Dog Town Fork of the Red River that runs down through the canyon was the last tributary to be explored and mapped due to the Kwahadi Comanches that lived here. The cavalry couldn't remove them. They finally did a horrid thing and killed are their horses! That broke their spirit and Quanah Parker, the chief, finally gave up and went to the reservation in Oklahoma. Okay, now, you know even more! 😳😂
@sarahr2498

Marian Kay amazing! I’ve always wanted to visit TX! We are high also, about 3500 ft. Regularly blasted by 60 mph winds from the Rockies. Just north of Great Falls. Hard red winter wheat region. Snow again tonight, and below zero AGAIN! I
@mariankay6482
4 жыл бұрын
@@sarahr2498 Yep, the front just got here a little while ago. Our low was 34 and our high was 33 for today. It's just gonna get colder from here. The low tonight is supposed to be 15. No snow and the wind is blowing at 40 with gusts into the 60s. Nothing pretty to look at for all this misery! Not all of Texas is like this. Once you get south of here a few hours it all changes and then when you get down to the coast, it's like a whole other country! Texas is a big place and it's very different in each area. I hope you can make it down here, sometime. The WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo is starting this week. We almost always have cowboys from Montana here for it and visitors, as well. I have volunteered at the rodeo since it's inception almost 25 years ago. Due to some health issues, I haven't been able to help for the last couple of years. It's been tough to not be back helping get the food ready and serve all those folks. We serve the cowboys, their families, the ranch owners and sponsors and vendors free of charge. It's amazing food, too!!! There's also a big dance on Friday night. It's lots of fun! Maybe you should try anf make it for that one year. Then, you can head on south from there to see some of the rest of this state. Mg husband has been to Montana but that was before we were married. He says it's really amazing and beautiful and big sky is true and the mountains are beautiful! He's wanted to take me up there for years but the farthest I've made it is to northern Colo! Maybe one day we will get up there. Y'all stay warm and safe and dry!

I've been told that I can use garlic from the grocery store if it is organic. It doesn't have the sprout inhibitor. Our store doesn't sell organic garlic; so, I'd have to order it. I didn't realize there were so many different varieties until I looked at the garlic for sale online. I think the soil is still workable; but, most all of my gardening stuff has been put in storage. We haven't had snow yet; but, I don't imagine it is too far off. I quit watering the grass when we started having freezing temperatures overnight. If we're lucky, we still have daytime highs in the 50s; but, that will end soon.
