The reason for this is of course that I like those better, plus I never trusted that the hype for the newer models would last, and I was right. So don’t just assume that ALL Rolex is overpriced.

Quality wise, any Grand Seiko would be much better than a Rolex. Functionality wise, a G-Shock would beat it hands down. But in terms of prestige, maybe only a Cartier Tank or an Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch could match it in the lower end (think Oyster Perpetual, Datejust, stainless steel Submariner). In the higher end, only Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, Vacheron Constantin, A. Lange & Sohne, Jaeger Le-Coultre, or F.P. Journe could exceed a Rolex in terms of prestige and brand recognition.

Well, I do think it's probably objectively competitive with a Longines with an L888, for example. I see what you mean about it being well finished, but it's not precise and finished on the level of an Omega, and debatably on the level of a Longines. My eyes kept being drawn to how the end links mate up approximately with the case. Most importantly though, a Longines with equivalent specs is going to ask that amount retail and often sell for less, even with it's brand recognition. In this case, I'd look hard at it if it were half that price, with a retail of 3/4 that price. In that price range (on sale), i'm currently eyeballing this Orient RE-AY0005A00B, but I don't see any good reviews of it.

I've noticed that many watches running $2k to $5k+ use the exact same movements as watches running $500 to $1,500 - the base SW-200 or the NH-35. All other features being the same. It's because the big conglomerates that own multiple name watches maintain artificial "price points" over the watch lines they own. Think Baume et Mercier, Hamilton, Longines, Bell&Ross, etc. Compare with numerous lower priced watch brands that are just as good - Vaer, Venezianico, Traska, Pitzmann, etc, too many to name. I realize that consolidation saved mechanical watches from extinction during the quartz crisis, but it has soured me on much of the lower end of the industry. You're supposed to shell out a lot more for, essentially, the name. Of course, once you get to the very low end of the luxury market (Rolex) and on up, this does not generally apply.
