Fun fact: Betty Boop was based on a black woman. Her name was Esther Jones. I believe took Paramount to court for stealing her character. She was unable to prove she first preformed “boop boop a-doop” on stage and seeing that baby-talk was relatively common for stage girls, and the claims going against her stating that Helen Kane (the recorded voice of Betty boop) preformed the Betty boop songs before Esther (which was false), Esther lost the lawsuit. She continued to play the character on stage but she made no money from the profits paramount made on Betty boop.

I'm so happy Betty is finally being recognized. When i was little, I lived in the ghetto and was too poor to afford cartoons. I lived on Durdin Drive, Silsbee Texas. I don't live there anymore luckily lol. But yeah, Betty boop and Popeye were the only cartoons I had. I was literally raised on her. I'm glad she's being recognized. Edit: I know she's been popular for a while, but not as popular as she is now. When i was growing up, not many people knew of her, but this also could be the fact that I was living in a ghetto town where old fashioned cartoons were not focused on. Also, I know it wasn't necessarily a "good" cartoon due to the racism and sexism. That's not what I was talking about, please don't focus on the negative right now. Let's just focus on the fact that it's an iconic vintage cartoon, k?

@@jennyro6789 No. Helen Kane was the voice actor. Baby Ester was a singer who did in fact inspire Helen Kanes interpretation of Betty Boop, in terms of the "boop boop ba doop". Helen used inspiration of Clara Bow for the look. Also its important to not that Baby Ester is not the first one to say "boop boop ba doop" in the scat style, that award of innovation goes to Gertrude Sanders. Additionally, I don't believe it was "stolen" because scar singing was a musical style / genre of its own. Helen Kane didnt come up with the style and the "boop ba doop" and neither did Baby Ester, instead an older singer Gertrude did. Would that make Baby Ester a thief? No, I don't believe it would. It merely means that Gertrude Sanders may have started a really popular style

to anyone who is confused why it says gay: the original meaning of gay was ‘happy’ so in old audios or old tv shows from the 1900’s some of them might say gay because they didn’t refer to it as two men together in a couple it was to the meaning happy so remember this ❤ edit: I started war- edit: .. 1.2k??? I was just giving a definition 1.5K?????

Fun fact : the original Betty boop was based on a black woman who sang. Her name was Esther Jones. It's sad that they made her white, just to be more acceptable socially at the time. And Esther actually did sing "boop-boop-a-doop" in some songs. I wish more people knew about this!!
