I came across your video and started watching just to see what you’re about. I grew up sewing all my clothes, but I don’t usually watch videos over an hour long. Your manner of instruction, clean professional videography, pleasant background music and clear voice drew me in and I grabbed a cup of coffee to watch it all. Excellent teaching! And oh how you took me back to my sewing days with my mom 50 years ago. Thank you so much. I’m inspired to get back to garment sewing. Perhaps a granddaughter will wear this lovely dress!

I have no interest in skirt making and I'm sure I'll never make one, but you somehow ended up in my feed. I saw a video on another channel but thought I'd come here to mention how great of a teacher you are! You explain things so clearly and give so many little bonus tidbits of relevant info. In spite of never having sewn anything, I don't feel like I would need to google any extra vocabulary to do this project. You seem so comforting and welcoming as well. What a beautiful tutorial! I hope I come across this way to my students as well. 👏❤

I had a tough time with my first sewing project, and then I moved into a house that has smaller rooms and I can't say I've been inclined to pull out my machine again. But I love your videos, because it feels like I could follow along one day if I had the motivation.

Ok, wow. This dress is what fantasies are made of. I think I will have to make a visual diary of my progress when I make this dress! The sheer volume of fabric alone should make for some funny pictures! My little sewing room will be overflowing, 🪡🥰Hope I don't lose my dog Ruby under all of it. Lol! Gertie, I wouldn't even attempt this dress without this video. Thank you, thank you.

The construction of this dress was so fascinating to watch. It was suspenseful because I had no prior understanding of how everything came together to create the middle section and bubble skirt. The end result is stunning! Congratulations! You created such a beautiful and interesting sewing pattern.

47:56 if you’re having difficulty with the gathers, use a heavy duty upholstery thread (I like Coats and Clark) just in the bobbin. Pulls the gathers extremely easily without breaking and the fabric usually slides right along almost like it’s greased! Hippie side note - If I ever pull long threads out entirely, before I throw the thread away I wrap it around my fingers and cut it so there’s no risk an animal will get tangled in it somehow. I do this especially with heavyweight thread - if you’ve never found a bird caught in fishing line it changes the way you look at discarded trash 🌎

Way above my skill level for now. Something to shoot for. This is an iconic dress and knowing how a bubble hem works is very useful, I should think.

Gertie!!! My mother really likes your work! We are from Europe and would love to know where we can buy these specific kinds of fabric. We are visiting NYC in october this year and i've heard that you had a pop up in walmart. Are there any more fabric stores we should keep in mind? Like e.g. garment area on Manhattan?

Do you hand stich the top of the cummerbund to the bodice or do you just leave it free?
