South-east of Perth, in an area isolated by the River Earn to the south and the River Tay to the north, sits Moncreiffe Hill, the small hamlet of Rhynd, and Elcho Castle. There are a few steadings and houses too, but essentially that is it.
Today's wander takes us out of the fair city of Perth in the direction of Moncreiffe Hill. We follow a forest track on the southern edge of the hill, a track that bristles with flowers of the forest, but is almost impassable in places. The presence of a path or track on your map does not always mean you can follow that route.
Just before Rhynd we head downhill towards Elcho Castle and its fine doocot. There, in an orchard that gives apples and pears in Autumn, not far from the castle and the River Tay, we stop for a pie: a mutton pie topped with mashed potatoes and beans from Bayne's the bakers in South Street, Perth.
While picking beans from our hair, we pause to consider the drone of traffic on the M90 motorway, its tendrils almost cutting off the western section of this colourful stretch of land that at times feels like a flower-filled paradise.
From there we try to follow a footpath and track, but our map is out of date and we end up following tractor-tyre tracks through a field of yellow rape before eventually reaching tarmac and the way back to Perth.
An enjoyable walk that ends with a beer in The Ship in Perth.
Oh, and did I mention George?
