We completely agree with the Venerable's translation. We call it collected and not concentrated. There are two types of Jhana - One from concentration and another from a true samadhi state as referred in the video. This is the state that leads to Nibbana.

Ordinary Jhana is projective onto external phenomena but the special Jhana or Samadhi is Self-reflexive...the awareness is turned back in on itself. The Self is no longer dispersed throughout this existence but is said to be "gathered up in the realm of immortality (amataya dhataya) it is the anamnesis/recollection talked about by Plato...the reconstitution of the body of Osiris spoken of by the egyptians mysteries. Its perennial wisdom.

Bhante’s re-translating of key concepts makes the Buddha’s peerless teachings much, much easier to implement. Concentration is tension-building in the mind. The goal is to unify through a deepening calmness of the mind. That was the Buddha’s intent. Thank you Bhante 🙏

I verified the corrections of the translation with a sanskrit teacher. Who said they were all correct!! Not only that, bhantes corrections in . translation have made a tremendous progress in my own meditation. Sadu sadu sadu

Collected attention is more in keeping with what is being practiced. Scattered attention is collected

Perfect translation. All Samadhana (calmness - Kannada and several other local Indian languages) had been destroyed by the misunderstood translations of Samadhi by various translators. Bhante Punnaji has done great service by going deep into Buddha's words and bringing out their intended meanings through his translations. Such a critical word - Samadhi. His explanations, all of them, including the Paticca Samuppada, are exceptional and exude clarity. Thank you so much.

To place the mind in one place IS called concentration and with concentration comes unification.

Someone who practises meditation will understand what "samadhi" means in his/hers own experience. What do you call bringing mind in to a single point, collecting your mind in to a single poin? Concentration. People are so obsessed with words and all they have to do is to sit down and meditate and experience it. There is no need to explain it. If you just want to learn words, go to study dictionary. If you want to learn your mind, go inside.

You have to put it in the context of the sutta. If you read the sutta in question (Ānāpānasati) you will see that concentration makes no sense. A meditator truly feels the change and improvement with the right understanding of the word/the right translation. "“Breathing in long, he understands: ‘I breathe in long’; or breathing out long, he understands: ‘I breathe out long.’ Breathing in short, he understands: ‘I breathe in short’; or breathing out short, he understands: ‘I breathe out short.’ He trains thus: ‘I shall breathe in experiencing the whole body of breath’; he trains thus: ‘I shall breathe out experiencing the whole body of breath.’ He trains thus: ‘I shall breathe in tranquillising the bodily formation’; he trains thus: ‘I shall breathe out tranquillising the bodily formation.’" Do you see anywhere "concentrate on the nose?"

When in this video did bhante say “to place the mind in one place”? Maybe you’re saying what you want to hear and not actually listening to what he’s saying. The stead of equality is a state of mind that is not the same as a concentrated mind. It isn’t as simple as just sit and meditate, otherwise what’s so special about what the Buddha taught? Maybe there’s a little more to the picture here.
