Buddha’s teachings were passed down through oral recitation throughout the decades until the first century BCE and subject to debates. There is no way mistakes could have occurred just like we ordinary people passing on information that we hear like you said. Ananda is known for his highly developed memory and often praised by Buddha for it. He attained enlightenment just before the The First Buddhist Council, after Buddha’s passing into nirvana, and he recited the suttas during the first council. Buddha did not teach any Ahbidhamma sutta and is was not among the suttas recited by Ananada. Ahbidhamma sutta in the Mahayana tradition is not the original Buddha’s teachings and was written only during King Ashoka’s time. That said, it is however a useful compilation and commentary that has become to be included in the Tripitaka. By this, it is also not meant that Ananda remembered the Buddha's words verbatim - this would have been neither possible nor necessary, as understanding the Dharma is not dependent on the arrangement of words and sentences but on the comprehension of the meaning of the words. Rather, Ananda remembered the gist of what the Buddha had said, to whom he said it, particularly important or prominent phrases, similes or parables that were used and also the sequence in which all the ideas were presented. Ananda would repeat what he had heard and remembered to others and gradually a large body of oral teachings developed. Please note that The First Buddhist Council was attended by 500 Arahants who have agreed that the Vinayas and suttas recited during the council as true and correct as was laid down and spoken by Buddha. While schisms already occurred during the 2nd Buddhist Councils as different schools have emerged, historians with no religious biases have established that Pali Canon contains Buddha’s original teachings. 佛陀所教的佛法没有大乘, 小乘,金刚乘之分. Even Mahayana tradition adopt the Theravada Vinaya. It is therefore not right to disparage Theravada as 小乘. A lot of Mahayana teachings are influenced by the Chinese culture. The core teachings of Mahayana however does not differ from Theravada teachings or Buddha’s original teachings.
