I've got a lot of ideas for fractal artwork (a thing made of the same things) and this is my first dabbling into that idea. The plan was to create the iconic box art of the Bicycle Playing Cards using the cards themselves.
After some initial testing it was obvious that I'd need pretty thick and sturdy card stock to act as my backer because the cards tended to warp and bend a lot when glued down.
If you plan on doing this yourself, get a big pack of Xacto blades, you'll dull them frequently by cutting through so much card stock. Don't break the bank getting the name brand ones; here's the ones I used:

I was going for a rustic/aged look for the final product so I used some reclaimed yellow pine as a backer, but I could definitely see this being really nice as-is on a clean, white backer board.
I kind of wish I hadn't tested the waters with the red-bordered one by making the spade logo a collage, but I was trying to see how many of the bits of cards I could incorporate into the design. I just don't have a matching pair now. Good reason to get rid of one and keep the other so they don't live together and look off balance!
As far as a sealer, I wasn't sure if polyurethane would seep into the card stock, so I went with a more mild acrylic sealer in many fine coats.
