Great tips Sam, thank you. I have my own question though, regarding video om the A9... I shoot dogs & I have started doing some basic video stuff. What would be the best focus settings to maintain AF when the dogs are running towards the camera? Also... when i activate back button focus, the stabilisation kicks in but it's like the AF stops tracking, which is useless for me. So basically, if you had a bird flying at you at speed in video on the a9, how would you nail focus in video? I feel like i'm doing something wrong? Surely i can have the image stabilisation when the camera is tracking the subject? At the moment, I dont press anything, the camera picks up focus as soon as I hit record but its like it struggles to keep up with focusing in video for subjects coming at me at speed
@SamRino
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much appreciate it😊🙏 I don't think you are doing too much wrong, tracking a fast moving subject coming straight at you is very tough especially in video, but here is a few things you can try. Check your tracking sensitivity and try taking it off responsive and more towards locked on. It will grab focus slower but it will stick to target better. Make sure your focus limiter is set like I talked about in video, that also applies to video. Last thing also I rarely hit my focus button when tracking a subject in video( i let the camera autofocus ) unless its not finding the target at all , every-time you hit that button the system tries to reacquire the target and might lose focus . For focus mode I would try wide or zone . Hope those help, tracking a subject coming straight at you fast is tough in photography, it's even tougher in video.

@@SamRino thank you very much Sam, it's greatly appreciated. I wonder what the performance difference in tracking in video coming at the camera is between the A9 & A1. Yes I pretty much set up how you've described, I'll just keep in mind it can be difficult, especially as I like a shallow a DOF. Maybe i'll also find it easier to really close down my aperture to say f8-f10. I am just trying to accurately nail the dogs in slow motion with solid AF running at me I am. Thank you & keep up the quality content

Thanks for the tips, it's really too bad there isn't a way to program shutting off IS with a custom function set or having the camera disable it automagically at higher shutters. Seems that could be done with these computer/cameras. I do a lot of mixed shooting and always wind up shooting BIF with it in mode 1 when walking around taking perched bird settings when someone comes flying by and surprises me.

Hi Sam good video and good tips thanks. I use a nikon d850 and am thinking about switching to sony a9II. What's your opinion on the sony a9II for wildlife photography. Thanks
@SamRino
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Joao 😊🙏 I switched from Nikon to Sony about 5 years ago and I been extremely happy with my decision.. I was shooting the D850 and D500. The Sony A9ii is a fantastic camera for wildlife, if the A1 was not out I would be shooting my A9 primarily . One thing to keep in mind though is you will not be able to crop as much as the d850 . The A9 taught me to get closer to my subjects . I love the A9, one of my favorite all time camera :)

I had been considering swapping my D850 for most of last year - I typically used it with the Nikkor 200-500. I was unsure whether to go Cannon R5 or Sony A7R4 but, when the A1 was announced, I knew that was the camera for me. Coupled with Sony’s 200-600 (as used by Sam) the results I’ve obtained have been light years ahead of those I achieved with my Nikon gear. Absolutely no regrets, the Sony system is awesome.

Great shots and video as always Sam 🙏🏻😊. How do you maintain low ISO levels (or perhaps less noise) at those very high shutter speeds (perhaps 1/3200 and above) unless you are always shooting in bright sun light ??
@SamRino
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much Adi !!! ISO is really not that low but I am usually shooting in decent light . I deal with the extra iso noise by using Topaz Ai, great program , it is fantastic for dealing with noise but still retaining detail .
@adiapte9575
3 жыл бұрын
@@SamRino Actually I have a A9 along with 200-600 and I also have 100-400 lens. Both these combination work great and noise levels are low. However I miss the high resolution at times, so I had recently bought A7R4, but for some reason, I think the camera that I got had some issue. I was getting soft and grainy images most of the time even at high shutter speeds for both moving and stationary birds. Few sharp images which I got on A7R4 came out grainy due to ISO (even at -round 3000 iso). Eventually I returned it since I thought it had some kind of issue perhaps on IBIS or sensor. Don’t know. I think the problem with high res cameras is noise levels get exponentially higher with increase in ISO. Does A1 have noticeable noise on ISO 2000 and above ??
@SamRino
3 жыл бұрын
@@adiapte9575 Yes for sure A1 has noticeable noise at 2000 iso its the nature of high res cameras . Its definitely not as noisy as the A7r4 but thats also understandable since its 50 megapixels vs 61. But also the high megapixels can stand up to noise reduction and still give you amazing images especially using something like Topaz Denoise, I think its a must if shooting a high megapixel camera. it is a lifesaver. I also think the A7r4 is a very tough camera to shoot wildlife action with unless you are using the 600 F4 . It took me a lot of experimenting and trial and error to get good results using that camera with the 200-600. That camera will really expose any mistake , shake or motion blur. so to answer your question the A1 does have noticeable noise at iso 2000 but its certainly not as severe. I also think besides having less megapixels than the A7r4, it processes noise much better and is very easy to deal with using noise reduction. Hope that helps. Sorry about the long answer lol 😂

3:20 - 5:30 was absolutely show stopping especially your image at 3:41, along with the video of the eagle and your choices of music in sync with your images makes your video the kind of video you can’t watch just once. And yes I’ve heard it before about shutting off image stabilization but was reluctant to do it because when I asked about that at different camera stores I was told to leave it on and only recently did I shut it off and noticed improvements. Thank you again for your tips, keep up the great work.

Thank you so much Gerry really appreciate it and thank you for the great feedback 😊🙏 I experimented a lot with stabilization. It started out at first that I turned it off because it was easier to leave on mode 1 and just turn it on and off when switching between video and stills. But then I noticed I was getting more keepers with it off, so I started really testing between mode 2, 3 and off, for me I find I get better results with it off at high shutter speed. So now I only use it for video or when I am shooting stills at low shutter speeds .

Usable, practical tips as usual, thank you. Were you mostly at 600mm? When using the "tracking wide" mode, if I start tracking a bird in clear sky and it flies towards am obstacle, the tracking does well even after the bird emerges from behind the obstacle. It works less well when there are obstacles in the frame to start with. The alpha wants to jump to the object closest by. Any recommendations on what focus mode to use then?
@SamRino
3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much appreciate that Turgay !!! Zone will work better in that case, once the bird gets in the clear you can still use zone or switch to tracking. I have Tracking wide assigned as a registered focus area on one of my buttons so i can switch back and forth on the fly .
