Excellent video and great shot. You may already know this, but the .30-40 Krag was a favorite rifle of Larry Koller, author of the deer hunting classic "Shots at Whitetails, " first published in 1948. Your video shows why he was so fond of that rifle. Thanks also for being respectful of the game and an ethical hunter.

Beautiful buck man, and to take it with such a historic gun. You just don't see the old 30/40s any more. I haven't taken a buck since 2006. He was my best to date, a nice 8 point with the bow. Hopefully I'll have a chance with the flintlock. Never took a buck with it yet, so I won't be so picky in muzzleloader season! Best of luck, shoot straight!!

It just so happened the camera was leveled in the right spot so all I had to do was zoom just a tad and lift my gun up over the tripod and aim. The second I pulled my gun up is when I bleated. I think you can hear the safety go off in the video. Thanks! Its kinda odd seeing myself so excited lol.

I hope all the hunters here take note of how quickly you bolted another round in! That was PROFESSIONAL level response, man. If you'd hesitated, this buck would still be haunting you! Did you by chance have his jaw aged? I really believe you underestimated his age. I think he's 4.5. And to anyone who hasn't ever tried hitting something the size of a deer's vitals 100 yards with open sights...TRY IT! lol. It's REALLY hard, especially with a gun you haven't shot a lot. You usually don't see deer stay put after you shoot. You were fortunate they didn't know where the shot came from. That buck was yours 100% man! I hunt near the clearfield county area. Seen you pass up a lot of respectable bucks that wouldn't be passed up in my area. A lot of younger hunters are eager to pull the trigger and you can't blame them. When I'm a little older I'm gonna purchase a nice chunk of land to have plots and such on so we can manage the bucks and make sure the only time we harvest is when they are mature and ready to go. This is my favorite video of yours. Great buck man

I told the gun store owner about this video, and ironically he knows of this video and knows the channel owner and his family personally, both through hunting up there and coming from that area. We're from SW PA here, got my gun from Jeff at Mohney's Firearms, if anyone in the area wants to check it out, great place. Looking forward to getting the gun, too bad it will be after deer season, but at least I have good guns I can hunt with anyway and plenty of deer tags to fill.

Outstanding deer, the old Krag in .30-40 is a rifle I have used in my hunting for the past 55 years, it's still an old friend, packed one on the last two wild boar I killed using 220-grain ammo. It's still a viable choice in the woods. Action is super smooth all hand fitted, just a joy to carry. If you find a nice example with a good bore grab it up people, you will be happy you did.

That's a nice 5×5 buck you shot. I think it's aroung a 4.5 yr old deer and definetely mature. I couldn't believe it only weighed 155lbs. I shot a 4×4 with a 17" spread that same season and it weighed 205lbs, but it only scored 108 3/8 antler wise. I a whitetail bucks average size body is bigger in Washington State. That's even sweeter that you got him with the Ol 30-40 Krag. Too cool man, I digg your guys hunting videos. Thats one of the best videos I've seen all year. Congrats John you deserved it. I love how it all played out with the miles of travel and months of trail cam pictures. And all came to an end when you were doe hunting with an old gun. I love it...gonna be hard to top that one.

Love all of your videos. I can't get back into the woods like I used to. Age and heart problems . They bring back good memories of the times I would catch rattlers and hunt the mountains of northern Cli ton and Potter counties.
