If a conference has this many strong teams, why is there a need to implode it? I hear everyone say the ACC sucks but almost the teams are either wanted by the big 2 or they at least think they are wanted.

@@GR-bn3xjyou are a rare commenter who understands this 👍. It’s not going to implode. Far too valuable to espn. The primary problem most people seem to have with understanding this is that they are conflating what espn is paying the conference with what the conference is worth. ESPN is paying what they are paying because the contract was negotiated before the college football media rights bubble. ESPN will renegotiate before they let the conference “implode”.

Assuming the BIG12 adds FSU & Clemson(Which is a very big IF), I would think Louisville, Vtech, UNC, & Duke would be the primary targets. Since BIG12 already has UCF & FSU, adding Miami may not offer much additional value in terms of expanding footprint. The BIG12 will only add programs that add value, programs that would immediately increase annual payouts to current members. FSU, Clemson, Louisville, UNC, Duke, VTech, NCState, Miami, would be primary targets. GTech & Syracuse would be secondary targets. Louisville is one of the higher revenue producers in the ACC so I def see them being one of the programs targeted. If the BIG12 doesnt add FSU & Clemson, I see the BIG12 adding Louisville, VTech, NCState, & Miami. Expanding the BIG12 footprint into Virginia, NC, Kentucky, & South Florida. Which from a footprint expansion perspective makes sense. If FSU & Clemson is added, I would be curious to know if the BIG12 would pursue Miami or not being they would already have FSU & UCF... Who knows at this point which programs end up in the BIG12, but one thing is certain and thats Brett Y will be aggressive in adding programs that increase value. So I can see the BIG12 adding at least 4 programs no matter what FSU & Clemson do... Maybe as many as 6.. People who think the top half ACC programs will just sit around and not explore their options after FSU & Clemson leave is not in tuned to the effects of human behavior in the world of business. Momentum, perception, fear, & panic are all very impactful factors at play, and once those two programs leave, I think top remaining ACC programs will also seek greener pastures. More future revenues, more stability, less risks. The good thing about parity is the value is more diversified. BIG12 is not a top heavy conference like the ACC. Its value is better diversified from top to bottom, & in many ways. Its also a superior basketball conference. So I can see this being attractive to UNC & Duke for that reason. OR... maybe the SEC wants to improve its basketball and adds UNC & Duke. However from a culture perspective UNC, Duke, UVA are much better fits in the BIG10. Its impossible to predict who will end up where, but change is certain, and the BIG12's aggressiveness is also certain. I do think a few other ACC programs also bolt when its obvious how their bargaining power and future revenues will be significantly impacted by losing those two programs. People who think its a lateral move are only looking at current data points. Which are not going to be what metrics are used for decision processes. FUTURE metrics & projections will be whats used for programs. Considering all Brett Y is doing to increase revenues, renaming the conference, fully monetizing basketball as an independent product line, etc, not to mention the increases by adding XYZ programs & higher CFP % splits, and the reduction of revenues on the ACC side, BIG12 is trending up and ACC is trending down and the future deviation will only widen and programs will seek to jump on the uptrend to secure more stability. Dont underestimate the power of fear, fomo, & panic... ACC as we know it could collapse much faster than what we think. One week it could just be FSU & Clemson leaving, and the week afterwards it could be 4-6 more ACC programs hitting the door.

This is very well said! Big 12 has incentive to expand regardless. FSU and Clemson have already got the no from Big Ten and SEC so they better figure out what they are going to do. It’s a no brainer for most of these teams to go Big 12. Great point about UNC Duke and UVA they are all much more fitting for big ten and honestly to round it out they would add Syracuse.

@thedailyhuddlesports maybe these schools should realize they are actually in a good conference, if so many teams are wanted, and work more on getting money for the conference instead if imploding it. Outside of FSU and Clemson, I think most schools.would be happy staying if they could get the money to compete. They spend apl.their energy on leaving instead of trying to fix the situation
@thedailyhuddlesports

That’s 100% accurate! Pac 12 is a good case though, the commissioner had opportunities to fix it but let it spiral out of control and didn’t take teams leaving serious enough. ACC needs to address it right now and make all parties happy as possible!

Imo foxespn will funnel teams into the XII for a cheaper rate and split the cost. They will give a pay increase but it will still be cheaper than moving teams to a P2 (Fox $25/espn $25 total about $50m per school) This gives fox access to the southeast and retains ACC teams with espn and increases content, increases customer base, etc... But the main issue, the GOR, remains intact and future revenue streams are protected. IF they funnel 8 teams for a total of 24 at $25m each thats only $600m for fox and $600m for espn.

Yeah, this is the networks maneuvering to save money I think. Why pay 4 when you can pay 3. It's a shame bc football is better with more conferences and traditions in my opinion. The health of the sport is better when half of the teams aren't disinterested, which is what would happen of they get their way and eliminate the G5 spot. The networks and big boys are do greedy and conceited they forget what made this sport so popular, and think they don't need everything that made it popular and can change it to what they want it to be. If they get their way, it won't happen overnight, but eventually it will start to decline in ratings and popularity. College fans aren't NBA fans. They don't just switch teams. When their team is out, they become a lot more disinterested. They still may watch every now and them, or kinda keep up with it, but not like they did. I think the networks are ignoring the overall health for money, and the Big 2 are going along with it bc they also get alot of money and think they don't need everyone else either.
