If you are looking for a beautiful beach in Maui, you NEED to check out Makena Beach, also known as Big Beach! This beautiful beach features white sand stretching for nearly 2/3 of a mile and crystal-clear water.
Makena Beach is located south of Wailea, about a 10-minute drive from the resort area. The beach access is off of Makena Road, between two black lava outcroppings. There is a parking lot with a fee of $10 per car and $5 per person. Alternatively, you can park along the road for free and walk in.
The beach itself is stunning, with soft sand and turquoise water. The views of the islands of Molokini and Kahoʻolawe are amazing, especially at sunset. The beach is divided into two sections: Big Beach and Little Beach. Big Beach is the main area, where most people hang out, swim, snorkel, or surf. Little Beach is a smaller cove on the north end of Big Beach, where clothing is optional (lot legal) and nudity is common. There is no lifeguard or amenities at Little Beach, so be prepared if you decide to go there.
One thing to note about Makena Beach is that the waves and currents can be very strong and dangerous. There are signs warning about the risk of spinal cord injuries and drownings, and the lifeguards are constantly on alert. The slogan on the sign and often repeated by the lifeguards is “If in doubt, don’t go out”. I recommend staying close to the shore and following the lifeguard’s instructions. If you are not an experienced swimmer or surfer, you might want to avoid going into the water when the surf is high.
At the very least, a walk down big beach is a MUST on your next visit to Maui!
