If you ever take a book that is written originally in French and read both the English and French versions, I would be very interested to hear your opinion on whether nuances are lost in the translation. I've often wondered if translations ever subtly change our experience of a story.

Teresa I’ve tried this with English books translated in Greek and imo,something is definitely lost in translation.
@gracie9658

Honestly I think it depends on the translator and the job they do. I read The Hunger Games in French and then in English, and it's basically the same. I just spotted a few details that didn't make it to the translation Perhaps classics are more different, because YA is quite generic and the writing style isn't that complicated.

When you were talking about how Emma felt stretched-out to 600 pages, that made me think of Nathan Garrison's "Veiled Empire". That book was 543 pages long excluding the Glossary, but its paperback edition was way too small and there were only like 260 words per page on its wordiest pages, so it was more like reading a 400-page book rather than 543.

I've read Le Comte de Monte-Cristo this year inspired by you! I was supposed to read it back in high school like 10 years ago but didn't do it. I was thinking about picking it up for quite a while but once I saw it in your challenge I've just went for it. I've read both parts, took me almost two months but it was soooo worth it! Just like you said the beginning of the first one is so captivating and then it becomes a bit slower. I almost dnf-ed at that point but I pushed through it and it gets so much better! I love big books! I'm not so much intimated with them, but I tend to "save" them to read when I have more time in my schedule. I hate it when it takes me longer than a week to read a book. Sometimes I'll start them and then set them aside, but I do try to finish. I've been reading It by Stephen King for over a year now! I just finished A Game of Thrones, took me about 6 months, but I did it! I really enjoyed it too. I do the Tome Topple readathon, that's usually about twice a year, and those weeks I really concentrate on reading as much as I can out of my books. This year I'm going to try to finish 20 big books. Over 500 pages is what counts for me as well. I'm actually reading one right now, and didn't realize it--Crazy Rich Asians is about 550 pages! Who knew? And its a pretty quick read so far, so I almost feel like I'm cheating, but I'm going to count it!

While I’m not sure if you’d love the rest of Ryria, I think you should give the rest of the series a shot. While it’s still a male dominated book, the princess (forget her name) and another female character become more important later on and are really great characters. And one of Sullivan’s best strengths as a writer is that he writes the full series before publishing and it really pays off. Edit: I also highly recommend the audio version, the narrator is one of my favorites :)

I think my personal reading challenge for 2019 will to be to finish series that I already own. I've read most of the first books and have the rest of the series and even if I like them I get distracted by the new shiny thing that comes out lol! So I really need to make an effort because I start to forget what the first book is about! Maybe every second book I read should be a continuation of a series. That might be going a little far but I'll count new books that come out as a part of a series when I've read the first one in there too. Maybe... lol I don't like to commit lol. Then I get stressed and don't read at all so it'll probably just be something for me to keep on my radar.

I did read a bunch of 500 plus page ones so I didn't fail on reading big ones in general just need to get into my epic books and give myself the time who knows I might get hooked right away. Classics can be hard to read fast - totally agree. And the second half of count of montre cristo is so good you just need to push through the first part and it starts to build and get amazing again. Philip Pullman actually wrote His Dark Materials with no target audience in mind, and I think it shows a lot. I read the first book when I was younger, didn't like it, and I tried again recently, this time in English, and DNF'd it. First I thought that I was just too young the first time around, but it was... suffocating? yeah, that's the world I would use, when I was reading it this month. I found it too "dark" as someone who loves dark fantasy (heck, American Gods is amongst my all time favourites and it's not exactly glitters and unicorns). And I can recognise the worth and the appael of the series, the writing and the story, so it was only me not connecting the proper way with the book, or the time was just not right with me (I will try again eventually, probably a few years later because I really want to know what happens). We say that's it's middle-grade or YA because it was marketed as YA, but in essence it isn't. And that's something I think we should be aware of, and take note, when talking about these books.

Test to know if you will read a book or not: Usually with books I'll read around 40 pages. If after that you feel the book or writing style isn't for you, then just drop it regardless of how many pages it has. If, on the contrary, you are enjoying it then you'll have no hurry and finish it, even if it's quite long.

I’m planning to do a Big Books challenge this year, I’ve got seven older TBR books ready and waiting. I then saw a Game of Thrones readalong and I’m like yeah I can do that as well! Ever hopeful!! 😂

I wouldn't say I'm *scared* of big books, but I do tend to pass them over in favor of shorter books that I can fly through. The fact that the only book on my shelves that I'm intimidated by is massive is a complete coincidence.

You might just encourage me to read the Philip Pullman trilogy again :) It's easier for me to read big books if they are on my phone/e-book reader. I don't feel the weight, they're easier to read and I'm not constantly reminded how freaking huge they are :P

I love big books. I just finished the third game of thrones book. I have also read The Stand. Like you, I liked the first part way better than the second part. I think it took me two months to read it. When I reread it I am going to read the shorter version.

I LOVE thick books and I'm so SCARED of reading books that only have a hundred of pages.. and if I'm gonna read book that have few pages I'm gonna have to get the entire series..maybe that just me having fear for being cliffhanged or not read enough detail.

I agree with you so much on Riyria. It did get better a LOT with each installment though, but the first two (especially the first) books were urgh... cringe, boring, and cheesy.

The reason big books are better (if they're mass market published in modern times) is bc it costs the publisher incrementally more to publish them and they don't recoup those costs. That's why the publishing standards are so much higher. Instinctively, you'll realize this if you think back on the truly 'garbage' books you've read, aka publisher cash grabs, which are usually skinny books with half the word counts of these big books you showed in this vid, and often part of a 'trilogy' which could've been told in 1 book

Québécoise power! Im gonna write in french for monte cristo hope you don’t mine. The stand is one of my favorite book and so is pullman’s trilogy. Read at 10 years old
