Things I learned from this epic remix: 1. Female vocalist(s) at 2:24 2. Whisper track @ 3:41 3. Roland RE-201(?) tape echo @ 5:25 (remember 1982 was wayy before digital) 4: Producer Steve Lilywhite was a genius (he also did U2, Talking Heads, Peter Gabriel) 5. Nearly 40 years later, this is still the badassest song ever.

The original explosive remix, in the club in 1983-84 this was a dance floor magnet. The in your face drum track with the aggressive guitar sound was a real wake up call. One of the extended remix gem of the 80's

Apaganplace Damn! How lucky you are! I’m jealous. Always wanted to see them but as far as I know they didn’t come to my region of the states. Then to find out toward the sad end of his painfully short life, Stuart lived just 2 states away from me in the American South. Think he was giving country music a shot in Nashville. I didn’t even know that, sadly, until after the fact. I would have certainly done the short trip over to see and support him. Well, one consolation is in the Southland are many a folks with Scottish and Irish ancestors. Hopefully he found some solace in that to some degree.

If you enjoy the drum intro on this song, alternative mixes, such as Fields of Fire in particular as it is even more 'spectacular' than in this song, are WELL worth exploring as well! Two such remixes are available in the Big Country Singles Collection, Vol 1 The Mercury Years ('83-'84)

An truly amazing band in all respects. This is the band that should have made it instead of U2.
@gymnastix

Well, U2's axman David Howell Evans did get at least part of "The Edge" he has (with that bagpipes-sounding guitar style) from Big Country guitarist-vocalist Stuart Adamson's innovation of a petal device called a "pitch transposer," dating back to when Adamson and singer-songwriter Richard Jobson were in their amazing punk era band The Skids. But obvious influence aside, U2 did still write and record some great tunes, particularly on their first few albums, with songs such as "Out of Control" (still my favorite and their best), "I Will Follow," "A Celebration," "Gloria," "New Year's Day," "Seconds," "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." And also, the singing voice of Paul David Hewson (a.k.a. as "Bono") is certainly more distinctive than the Big Country vocalist or that of fellow Celtic Rocker Mike Peters of The Alarm (who, incidentally, briefly filled in as the lead vocalist of Big Country after Adamson's suicide), among whose best-known singles were "The Stand," "68 Guns," "Strength" and "Sold Me Down the River," as well a cover of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door." All this aside, though, The Undertones (with original lead singer Feargal Sharkey) are still my favorite Irish rock band. I prefer my music to be more fun and upbeat, and the songs to have greater brevity.
