That's insightful. I think it applies to all of us. We each live somewhere on a continuum of risk taking, and how bold we appear depends on the present company. I could never say where on the continuum someone will find the most happiness, but I can say that we should always question where we are and consider a change.

Thanks. I've head now about several additives, but I checked with a couple of the paint manufacturers and they advise no adding anything. Just wipe it dry. They are now designing paints specifically for applying over wet blasted steel. They are thin to pass through the flash rust and can be applied to damp surfaces. I was also advised to simply thin our current epoxy primer with Xylene and that has worked very well so far.

I know this is an old video and you probably no longer check comments but I wanted to have a quick say because I enjoy your work so much. I get what you are saying about safety and I agree almost 100%. I never stop doing something for that reason. But let me tell you, as a lifetime metal worker with tinnitus, wear hearing protection when you can. I was sure I was fine and couldn't be hurt. But all of a sudden it just hit me that I heard ringing one day, it was loud and it has not stopped since that day. Hearing damage cannot be repaired and take it from me, life is a lot less enjoyable when you hear that ringing all the time and the quieter it gets the louder it rings. Sleeping, relaxing, reading, all activities are lessened. Now, I never wore protection and I am not saying always wear it religiously or stop what you are doing if you lack hearing protection, but it is a very small matter to grab a set in the morning and have them nearby because cumulative damage catches up eventually. It is your hearing and I will love these videos no matter what you choose(chose?) to do, but unless you have the ringing you cannot accurately judge your risk/reward factor. So all I am doing is trying to give you some perspective for when you make that choice. You may have noticed that metal shavings curl due to heat distortion. You will only have to have a doctor pull out a metal sliver that is fish hooked through your eyeball once before you hang some safety glasses around your neck. I use them with the same perspective as hearing protection. I am not religious about it, but if they are nearby I will grab them and put them on. Sometimes it is more pleasant to work free of encumbrance and I totally get that, but it can be an easy thing to just keep them handy and make it a habit. I don't think about society when I say this, just the damage that I (and I am sure you and a lot of us) have suffered and continue to suffer from. That being said, you do you, and thanks for the great content.

1.My opinion is that the problem starts at the beginning: Get the top sand screen smaller then 1/4 "(6mm) gap. Get it half that size 1/8" (3mm) maximum size grain. Filter the sand separately to another place not directly on top. Had the same problem too and I had to be really obsessive about the sand. It's more work but it will give you a steady flow of sand and no clogs! 2 Like mentioned in a comment below running wet sand trough the system is not such a good idea. Let the sand go dry and let it mix with water only at the end nozzle. Great inspiring video!! That gun is a monster!! :D

If you are going to blast with dry sand, that sounds like a great idea. I can have kiln dried sand delivered but it cost more that twice what plain sand cost. When I was using dry sand, I feed air to the pot from my 5 hp compressor and passed it through an air dryer. The air from the big compressor is loaded with water.

I asked a couple of paint manufacturers and they recommended using no additives. With the growth in hydro blasting there are now paints available that work on damp surfaces and with light flash rust. Cool, you have very good neighbours, mine are from a different planet. Riding my Ducati Monster down the street, not very loud at all, only a set of Staintune Pipes, so it's not much louder than stock and with only doing 30km/h I had 2 neighbours run out to show their discontent. 1 lady is waving her arms, so I pulled up and she tells me to stop racing... I was like what?? who's racing?? Apparently warming up the bike with a few revs from 3 houses up the street was enough to send her into a rage. Another neighbour on the other side of the block ran out and was snapping pictures of me riding past. These neighbours would not like me if I was bending pipe, grinding, etc. So when I start welding, I've got to make sure that I've got my garage closed up and I'll be building an enclosure inside my garage with sound insulation. It's basically a retirement village, anything outside a lawn mower or gardening equipment is seen as the end of the world. I do like that Harley Davidson pipe by the way, nice touch. Can you now see why I'm so envious of your building?!!

Those quick connects are called glad hands.Usually used in the trucking industry. If you would like to make sure you have clean sand and not have to work so hard. Take an old dryer that has lost its heating coil and mount up High enough to put a wheel barrow under neath take off the door and bypass the door switch so it doesn't stop without the door Cut out the drum between the fining and mount in screening heavy to hold the weight up into fine mesh to remove all large objects start it up with a barrow underneath and shovel into the drum as it is turning and when it gets full of debris either have a chute to fit inside that will catch the debris while it is turning during the clean out stage or if you want you can make a door in the drum that you can open without the barrow under neath. Just a suggestion. M

Hey i know this is another old video im commenting on but jus wanted to add that if you put phosphoric acid either in your water tank(if you use one when blasting) or just spray some on after and wash it off with wax and grease remover or laqcer thinner it will inhibit rust and prevent rust from forming in the poors of the metal and when water blasting its essential or it will haunt you in 5-10 years another option is self etching primer (has phosphoric acid in it) before you paint. im probably adding useless comments lol but i love the videos and work you guys are doin cause i love working with metal anyway good luck and have fun!

also forgot to add that POR15 is a great kinda pricey paint that is made to be used with phosphoric acid and is hard as nails and very crack resistant even with thick heavy coats only downfall is its not UV protected but is made to be painted on once dry the company actually makes a top coat for it that is UV protected
@SVSeeker

SV Seeker since your going to take a closer look i gotta mention the factory recomendations say to use there "metal ready" which is there own mixture of acid and "marine clean" which is just a cleaning solvent so we order Purple Power (31020P) De-Ruster which is a lot cheaper especially direct thru the company then just use lacquer thinner or wax and grease remover to clean the surface after, i know thats a long ass process for such a massive project but ive found you can cheat quite a bit, the main thing is to get most of the acid wiped off and then the POR will stick and last just fine but you could always try a few different methods on test pieces and leave them in salt water and c wat happens

SV Seeker POR15...man...awesome stuff when applied correctly(all in the etching!). Used that stuff on many car build floorpans! I like what you have done. Seems like you could save yourself a lot of headache by using a screen smaller then 1/4"... and when the screen separates the things out of the sand too big to go through, catch those and remove them from the area.. I have a few suggestions you may consider, Reduce clogs almost completely. 1. The 1" to 1/2" bushing to reduce too your clear hose.. How about instead using a 1" NPT too 5/8" Barb and slide clear hose onto that... Clear a Clog easily. 2a. Add down at the nozzle end of your wand, on the water/sand hose. maybe a T and valve and quick connect coupler. 2b. Make the water bypass hose a quick connect, to quickly uncouple at the water/sand injection 1" T at the bottom of the chamber. 2c. **Clear Clogs** Move water bypass to quick connect on Wand, and open full REVERSE flow of water to push clogged rocks back up and out the now open connection at the 1" T on the water bypass side.... should flow right out... That bass nipple thing might hinder clearing... Just my .02 *Thumbs Up to Ya *
