I love the workspace. I need a dedicated room. I’ve basically turned my house into a sprawled out studio. One permanent station and a large coffee table next to a mixer and PA so I can watch tv and mix casually and flip out gear on a whim. I only get away with this in my house because I’m single. When I was married it would never fly with the wife. 😂. I really like being able to change out gear frequently though when I want to. My space I mix in is definitely not optimized for uncolored mixing (flat response near fields, treated room, etc) but generally use multiple playback devices (headphones, pc speakers, large speakers, in my car, etc) to get a good mix across the board.

My current space is so crap haha I have Almost no room to work now. I miss the 22x18’ room I had, before moving to a city. Now everything is managed in a three-tier A-frame stand and a small 4-foot, folding Walmart table 😪 I’m really digging the streamlined feel of your room though, for sure !

The most difficult aspect of my studio is that its a bedroom studio and has to serve numerous functions, and it also has a huge radiator in the corner next to my desk. With my desk pulling double duty in such an awkward spot its hard to figure out where to fit a pair of monitors in. I tempted to just get a nice pair of open back earcups until i get into a bigger space.

Looks good, your studio went bigger , and more « smarter »/clever , and grew up in the same way as your channel and quality of your videos! I got some stupid yet maybe interesting question: with all the gears you have now, with such powerful tools, what is the synth/machine/vst etc you use the MOST? In my tiny home studio i realize that i got my matrixbrute, like you sitting on his throne, that i love but that i don’t use so much, some elektron machines etc etc but fact is, the gear i use the most is my dreadbox hades and my kog monologue and few eurorack modules (erica synths black wavetable/ mutable clouds / varigate4 and voltage block). i may replace the monologue with a circuit mono station since the new update adds « p locks « a new sequencer and some clever « preset patch per step. So my main tools are some gear i really like but not the one i like the most, they just more « intuitive » and easy? Guess i’m a lazy guy lol

I think the first thing is to decide what music to make, then decide on the gear. The rev 2 is a very pleasant synth. Great feel. For pure bass the Sub 37 surely is better, but with the mother 32’s that would be redundant.

Because of you I’ve got heavy G.A.S - must stop watching your channel ;-) BTW. iam before the decision to separate my studio, groove boxes and synth like you didt it. But, I love the idea of a harmonic allinone workflow at the same working space. Because of the acoustic symmetry. Find it not desirable to always turn the head to get a realistic impression what I’ve doing.... further many devices are working sometimes together, that makes me nervous especially when I find some sweet spots ... I would like to know if somebody has solved this in my allinone vision

Hey! what im wondering is how do you actually manage to have time for everything!? you have a channel with lots of quality contents, you have a shit load of gear so i suppose you must find time to use them... if not why bother buying gear right? I'm a family man like you, with a wife and 2 young kids. I don't have a KZitem channel, although i'd like to start one... this must take up quite some time, filming, video editing... So for there is music making and work, but my wife is always complaining on how i spend too much time on the computer and my synths!?!? that I need to spend more time with the kids and her. (I do try) So if I had 48-hour days, i would probably be fine :) but in our present 24 hour-day universe, even if i don't sleep (I sleep about 3-4 hours per night) i will probably never have enough time for music production, and/or any youtube channel, and spending ENOUGH time with my family. oh... I forgot time for friends in all this. How could I?!? maybe you can let me know on your secret on "How to have 48 Hours in a day"?
@BoBeats

Well I focus on my videos (see a recent community post where I link to a text about this). Music is secondary. A large setup is cool but takes more time for sure. I’d say its best to stick with 3-6 pieces, not more. But I also have this as a part time job: so I spend between 2-4 days a week in the studio.

Nice video. I like how you got it set up to bring gear on and off of the different surface areas in your studio. The biggest issue I have with my home studio is that the more gear I get the more I learn about how I want to produce music. So I have been constantly buying in selling gear for a while and not sticking with one piece long enough to get proficient. I think I finally found some good gear that I am going to keep for a while though. So now I get to learn it and start producing!

Great video as always, Bo. I'm always struggling with trying to not have a mess of cables, but still having all my outboard gear hooked up and ready to go. Definitely need another preamp or two, plus probably another mIO10. Or I need to stop buying gear (ha!) I like that you have the synthesizer desk. I have a space in the studio that's just an empty area that I'll toss a stand up when I want to work on a particular piece, and it also doubles for rehearsal space for when one of my acts is playing a show. I call it the "workshop". Anyway, thanks again for sharing your space and making such awesome videos. Keep up the good work!

I also have 3 stations. Sort of. I'll explain. First is my DAW/controller computer rig. I use it for composition and video editing, as well as broadcast. I also do a production stream/storytelling show from this rig. The computer is a custom built machine, but it's hitting the 3 year mark this November and is due for an upgrade. Second, I have my jam rig. This is used for streams and for jams, and is my collection of actively used hardware. At minimum this gets used for my weekly 2 hours stream. As electronic musicians, it sometimes seems like we don't practice as much as traditional musicians, but on this rig, I practice stuff. This is all hardware, but connects to my computer for broadcast. I also have it built "DJ booth" style, because it allows me to get a camera angle that is direct, and pleasing. My 3rd station is akin to your 90 degree rig. I actually have just replaced the tripod with an articulating mic stand and can now get any camera angle I want (with the tripod I found I was slightly behind, and could not get a pleasing direct or slight frontal angle). This open table gets reconfigured every single time it gets used. I use it to highlight gear, do unique combos, and it will be where I rehearse for other things like location shoots (TINY RIG!) or actual in person live performance. Everything interconnects. If I want to get a piece of hardware into a composition with my DAW, it doesn't move, just gets patched. Why 3, sort of? I have a 4th-ish workstation, and that's TINY RIG, which is a portable location shoot battery operated rig. I practice it on station 3, but really it goes in a bag and goes with me on hikes.

Unapologetic gear porn. Bring it. I would love to see more Matrix Brute action. Also, are you familiar with Sonarworks Reference software? It takes all the guesswork out of monitor calibration and is especially useful at balancing a sub with monitors. Plus the EQ curves can give you a lot more bottom end if you don't have a sub (I call it black magic). I don't represent them or work for them. I just love the software. They're nice guys and would probably give you a free copy if you did a review.

gosh..... my "studio" is a plastic toy from a CrackerJacks box, compared to yours..... Yours is Quite Impressive, and tidy :) i have mine divided into 3 areas also: M-Audio Venom, Arturia MicroBrute, Korg Kaosillator Pro+, Behringer Neutron(on preorder) - keys area 4 Stratocasters and 1 Telecaster, Orange Rocker15 Terror amp head, Randall 2x12 cab, Roland VG-8ex, Roland GR-30 - guitars Mac Mini i5 8gb RAM, Glyph 1tb ext, JBL 4311 monitors, MBox2, PT8LE, Peavey Deca724 amp, Mackie ProFX12 - recording all this sits in my bedroom, as i live in a 3 room flat in Jackson Mississippi(kitchen, bath, bedroom)..... i have Meniere's Disease, and no longer work.... my love of music is my refuge..... i create "odd" music, and find it satisfying. Korg SQ-1 is my next possible purchase.... then Volca Beats...... or opposite..... hahahaha(Circuit Monostation looks cool too !) i want to try and create a solo "synth and space-guitar" set for coffee shop and planetarium shows.... yes there is a planetarium here..... i LOVE sciences, especially Astronomy and Physics...... ollilab(BURG) is my biggest "current" synth influence..... Question : i LOVE the feel of the Arturia MicroBrute Pitch and Mod wheels, IS there a midi/cv "keyboard controller" that has nice wheels like the MicroBrute ??????

Thanks Bo for this video. It's always interesting to see how other people set up their stuff. I have spent ages planning out the wiring (MIDI and audio) for my music room, and quite a long time wiring it all in. Job done. Wicked. It doesn't work how I thought it would...damn it. Needs a rethink. Pull it all out and start again...What fun. Where's that spreadsheet with the MIDI routing..? Where did I get it wrong? Why does the arp on my SuperNover always start playing when I press "play" on the electribe? Oh that'll be MIDI start/stop commands....how do I get rid of that...It's a pain in the bum, but fascinating at the same time. Love the look of the Eurorack/MiniBrute set up. I'm envious of that. I have got to start making something with what I have before I can justify that expense. One day... One day...

With the interface and patchbays, do you monitor off the computer? I currently have an interface that works as a mixer when not plugged in to the computer do I can play with the computer turned off- the trouble is when I only have one or two things on, the switched off equipment seems to put noise into the interface, and as there are no trim/gain knobs on it, the noise gets fed into the monitors. When I'm recording it's fine as only the channels I want pads audio to the computer, but it's annoying for jamming on stuff. Have you experienced this? Thanks!

Sweet setup, Great synth playroom , I mean , studio:-) I'm finally gone and made the switch to use more analog/hardware as I recently got the minilogue with polara reverb. I'm considering getting the Infinity Looper to use with this setup and more... But before I proceed with buying new stuff, I'm wondering if I need to get a better audio interface? So far I record into logic via Roland SH201's )build in audio interface. I'm wondering if this changes the quality of the signal of the minilogue/polara when recording (as in I want to keep the most high quality/analog sound as much as possible) !!! so, I'm wondering if I need/should get a smallish mixer another USB interface? (Decent and not too expensive) I hear the Elektron RYTM has analog valves/warmth which can record audio into and sounds ideal but it's pretty expensive, are there any alternatives? Ideally I would want something which combines multiple features like usb interface/inputs/analog engine etc. Apologies for writing so much but I'm just confused about what steps to take next etc. So Any help or advice is 'warmly' appreciated ... Hey Bo! Like the hair down look...you could have been in Denmark's Eurovision band! They looked great but the song was pants - they should have done a Rammstein cover or something. And as for Sweden's entry...oh dear what a load of s..t (Oh heck - you didn't write the song, did you???? I'm sure you didn't write that song - your music is way more interesting!).

Neither do I - normally. I sat down in my favourite IKEA Poäng armchair with my evening meal on Saturday, switched on the TV and Eurovison had just started, I thought...oh why not while I eat. And I watched the whole thing from beginning to end and loved every minute! Oh my lord, I have changed! I'll be going to work in sequins soon! (And you know what? The surprising thing for me was that the music was not awful - in fact quite a lot of it was really good - I was amazed)

Having gone down the desktop hardware route this is my situation too. Everything needs power and audio cables and maybe MIDI as well. So it's all a bit of a mess. My room is small and while the desk was fine when I was working in the box, it feels a bit too big now. And a little low as I'd rather stand while noodling on hardware. I'm thinking of getting a keyboard stand to setup my main boxes on.

OK, I've got the most boring question, why the big ceeform power sockets under the MatrixBrute? What needs those?!
@BoBeats
6 жыл бұрын
They are regular power sockets. And its nice because I have gear on that desk sometimes :)

Ah cool, I need some of those on my desk, much easier than grubbing around for extension leads!

Bo, I have been following you not particularly long. You definitely influenced some of my purchases into my foray of music production. Currently I have a circuit, circuit mono station, bastl kastle 1.5, Korg monotron delay, a mackie profx8v2, 5 pocket operators, and Behringer Studio 50usb monitors. I have been slowly trying to integrate everything together with ableton but still need to work some kinks out. I’m interested in getting the OPZ, behringer neutron and the Volca sample or fm next. I’m on the fence since the OPZ and neutron aren’t out yet. I just got your coffee and beats 2 for my circuit and I’m enjoying it quite a bit so far!

Glad to hear it mate! I would actually wait with the op-z and think about what you really need in your workflow. The op-z will be another device that is hard to integratw

BoBeats honestly I have been having my eye on the digitakt for quite some time. The digitone would be cool but I feel as if I already have enough synthesizers for now. I like the Roland 8s and borrowed it from a buddy but I have heard so many good things about elektron.

Ah yes I see. Does that do enough to tame your room for mixing? Are they DIY or did you buy them, if so where did you get them and what do you think?
@BoBeats

I designed and made them myself. It does help a lot. They are made out of wood and got Knauf "glassfibre" inside of them. Pretty thick. Two layers on the side absorders and three layers for the corner traps. makes a hell of a difference for my room.

Haha yeah, I didn't show EVERYTHING. I have a bunch of stuff stashed away. Most of my gear is for review, and doesn't get that much love every single week.
