So great to see you two again, and what a treat to get a tour of your wonderfully productive place, after so long! Been following for several years and was sad when I thought you'd disappeared. Our place is far smaller and lower than yours (1/4 acre and at about 100' elevation), but we are trying to make it into a functional food-yard as well as ornamentals. For now we have producing bananas, avocados, peppers, and papayas. Hope to see more videos soon! 😀

How old are the trees? We did have that happen when the trees were very young but as they got older the beetles don’t seem to bother them. I’ve heard the beetles only fly sideways so you can protect them by surrounding them with plants or build cages with shade cloth

Surprised and happy to see you back. Looks like the time off YT really paid off. Hard to build a life while filming it. Now everything looks so well established. When I watched your earlier videos we were considering a move to the Big Island. Rising real estate prices on BI and high healthcare in US redirected us to the Silver Coast of Portugal. I just watched your last video in 2021. The issue of being a haole and the animosity towards them was a big factor. On the other hand, Portugal was promoting immigration with the D7 retirement visa. We fell in love with Portugal and the welcoming people. And there was one more interesting factor in our redirection…my wife is from the southern Philippines. She was never excited about moving to Hawaii. It was my adventure not hers. Her family lives off the land and sea in a rural area. My wife did that for 24 years. Then she surprised me when she said “What about Portugal?” 😃

Hello again, while you were looking a little nervous when the video first started as you were walking around your property I could see you becoming more calm and relaxed. Living in your own food forest will probably do that to you. A personal question, are you still vegetarians? Didn't know if the cow was part of your food future. Are you still using the same outdoor shower? Thanks for another glimpse into your little bit of paradise, cheers.
@OffGridHawaii
Жыл бұрын
Yeah it felt so foreign to film a video again! The intro to this video was the first time we had talked to a camera in like 3 years. We filmed the walking portion the next day. We are no longer vegan/vegetarian but that cow is our neighbor’s :) We do still use the outdoor shower but only if it’s really nice out.

Aloha! Happy your mature Mac nut trees are doing so well. We too found a dozen or so very mature trees when we bought our property six years ago. Currently we harvest maybe two bushels per season which is plenty for my wife and I. They are maybe 40 years old. Lots of ferns, heavy moss, and guava growing out of them. Would you recommend removing all moss, and heavy pruning? I’ve only fed ours grass mulch in the past around the drip line. What else would you recommend? 😊❤Mahalo.
@OffGridHawaii
6 ай бұрын
I would say cleaning them up would be a good place to start. cleaning the moss and everything off plus removing any dead wood and minor pruning. Also adding some woodier type of mulch along with the grass clippings should help.
