The guy in the canoe with the Senetor's Hockey Team Flag as a sail was one on the owners of the Pond Motel on the edge of Carleton Place. For the last 3 years of the Pond's existence that canoe sat out loose on the frozen pond over winter, often with a Canadian flag on it. Last year the Department of Transport bought the Pond Motel for demolition as it sat too close to the expansion of Hwy 7 to four lanes which should be finished by fall of this year, 2011.

For you American listeners, the Mississippi River mentioned in the song is not THAT Mississippi. There is another Mississippi River in Ontario. I have a picture of it.

He wasn't inspired from anybody. He really existed. He was a kind of national hero at a time when ethic rivalries between the Irish, the English and the French-Canadians often led to street fights. The sad thing is that our didactic material tells only few things about this great man...

Funny thing, real history kinda said he stood up to a tavern full of English soldiers who we using abusing language towards Quebecois. He gave them the challenge to fight or sign the ceiling. Either way they did.

Big Joe Mufferaw was inspired for Paul Bunyan of America's folklore. Some real persons are inspired for folklores' fictional heroes. The Canadian tall tale of Big Joe Mufferaw are kind alike of the American tall tales of real persons like Davy Crockett, Johnny Appleseed, Jim Bowie, Daniel Boone, Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hickok, and Casey Jones.

He sounds very much like my Crazy Uncle Bob. If you heard of his escapades you'd agree. Like the time he was working high-steel in the arctic and dared the five toughest fuckers to take turns driving him in the face and try to knock him of a stool. If one of them could make him hit the floor, he would buy them all drinks, if they couldn't, they bought him drinks all night. Man was he fucking liquored and swollen that night. The men called him "The Crane".

Joseph Montferrand, or Big Joe Mufferaw, was a logger. His life is the base story of Paul Bunyan...in fact, he makes Paul Bunyan look like a pansy. During a boxing match in the Champ de Mars, Montreal, the organizers had asked the crowd if anyone would like to challenge the champion of Canada. Joe accepted and fell the Champ with one punch. He was said to have fought 100 Irish street thugs (known as Shiners). He IS Mr. Canada. R.I.P Tom

Not shabby, but was ticked off when I passed thru Mattawa 1 time and they had no Big Joe, or Josepth collectables. By the way, there was never Paul Bunion in real history, all borrowed of big Joe who was a character. He was big, he was tough and could kick his boot print into the ceiling if a pub.
