these engines have an inertia starter system where either someone winds up or an electric motor starts spinning a wheel which then releases and the engine starts up from the inertia created from the spinning gear best way i can explain it

The first one is a Antonov AN-2. I already flew with one. The 9-cylinder radial engine (ASH-62) is started per inertia starter as you can probably hear. By the way, the antonov is the biggest biplane in the world. The second plane you mentioned is a 1935 Waco YKC. It has a 7-cylinder radial engine (R-775).

Anybody know why radial engines always have odd number of cylinders? To eliminate bad vibration issues... Firing order is in constant rotation.
@grahamjohnson7412
2 жыл бұрын
The multi-row Cyclone and Wasp radials had an overall even number of cylinders. Each row was an odd rumber.
@rescue270
9 ай бұрын
With an even number of cylinders arranged radially and operating on a four-stroke cycle, there would always be two adjacent cylinders firing one after the other. This would be a case of unbalanced power pulses, resulting in excessive vibration.

My A&P instructor was a fabric man. He spent years restoring a Staggerwing. I remember that he mentioned he couldn't find parts for the expando tube brakes. When the airplane was finally finished, he ran down the runway, locked up one brake and looped it, destroying years of work.

Do these engines even have any efficiency?. And also they should produces as much less pollution
@Reaper_03-01

Efficiency goes out the window when you're designing engines for aircraft going to war.
@matthewstorm5188
3 жыл бұрын
These engines are in most ways just large versions of the common gasoline automotive engine. And as such, efficiency is about the same - around 25-30%. Maybe a little bit more since larger engines often have a higher thermal efficiency than smaller ones. Efficiency may not be GREAT, but it is not horrible, either. At least when compared to other gasoline reciprocating engines. Pollution is a whole other issue, though. The smoke you see is actually normal for startup with a radial. Since the bottom cylinders are upside down, oil makes its way past the piston rings into the combustion chambers when the engine is sitting. This oil burns off when the engine first starts, creating a large cloud of smoke. But this smoke clears after the engine has run a few seconds. Of course, unlike modern automotive engines, these engines have no electronic fuel injection, oxygen sensors, or catalytic converters. They therefore create a good deal higher emissions than a typical modern car. But the same is also true for other engines of the time, including ordinary automotive engines. These engines also create fairly high lead emissions due to their need for high octane leaded fuel. Currently, aircraft piston engines still burn leaded fuel. So there have not really been any improvements in this area when it comes to aircraft reciprocating engines.
