This is one of the coolest challenges I have ever seen. Being a car enthusiast and gravitating towards classics I love to see guys like this who are building cars that can compete with modern technology using classic cars as the base. Having a car that they can change around and do road courses and top speed challenges with the same car is just incredible.

For those who are pissed about not knowing which Camaro won, the new car's best time was a 1:36. Big Red's best was a 1:41 until the driver lost control and crashed it. The damage was nothing too severe, but it was enough to not be allowed back on the track. Such a shame.

As much as I absolutely always loved Big Red.....and friggin HATE the new Camaros......but it's very off comparison imo.....the new Z is passenger pump gas fully loaded street car....being compared against a tube chassis aftermarket everything all out purpose built tube chassis race car. If you're going to compare new vs old ( provided someone would be willing to bring a true blue real 69 z out ) is to compare real factory stock 69 z/28 out not a tube chassis race car and make out as if it's good comparison

Meh.. the diff between a 13 sec car and 10 sec car is only a few car lengths over a quarter mile. That's pathetic. Should be many car lengths just to 60... but turns out fast isn't very fucking fast after all. I doubt you'd even feel the difference in acceleration between a 10 sec car and 13 sec. Suspensions are so fucking good now that driving a high perf. car is nauseatingly boring. You feel absolutely NOTHING on breaking, accelerating, turning... the car remains perfectly flat and composed. Some say as it should, but it makes for a horrifically miserable driving experience. I want my neck snapped, and football linebacker brain damage when I put the pedal down... this shit is a yawner. To get that experience, you need a 10,000 hp dragster that hits 300mph in 6 sec. I hate how boring street cars are.

Handsom B Wonderful Ehhh, yeah, ok. A night and day difference for a few car lengths over a quarter mile. And considering I've driven M3's, C63's, Gaymaro SS 1LE's, and others and left very very unimpressed, I seriously doubt a few extra car lengths would have made the difference. Nice try though.
@ThePodpie

13 to 10 sec in the 1/4... takes like an additional 300hp or more... must not be any difference. clown.
@TasteMyStinkholeAndLikeIt

Handsom B Wonderful If you can FEEL the difference of a few car lengths over a quarter mile you must be a professional driver, clown. Most people driving their fast car to and from work aren't going to FEEL a difference that small in the seat of their pants. Add a 1,000 hp, and a 500 foot lead over a quarter mile... yeah, you'll feel that.
@05gtdriver
10 жыл бұрын
***** The difference between a 10 sec and 13 sec car in the 1/4m is like 20+ car lengths.... each 1/10th is about 3/4 to a full car length. 20+ car lengths is over 300ft, basically more than the length of a football field.....about 1/4th the length of a drag strip. That's s LOT of distance. Just saying that 3 seconds in a drag race is eternal, I understand you're saying that on the street most people won't feel the extra performance a car 3 seconds faster provides as you can only go so fast before you have to brake for traffic, etc. Not trying to incite anything. Cheers!

The new Z/28 was the under dog, if you ask me. Big Red has been the one to beat for some time. It's almost not fair putting a stock new car against something so modified. The result speaks volumes to the success of new handling technologies, and I applaud Chevy for it. I'm still an old school guy, and would choose Big Red every time. its not a stock 69 camaro at all and if your eyes and ability to assess the speed of an object are working you will be fully aware big red dominated this event quite effortlessly. the front tires on big red are wider than the rear tires on the new camaro,the stance and suspension of big red are designed to make child-splay out of courses like this,the engine is tuned to put down power in the rpm range of the gearing the car is set up with.the new camaro is more minivan/suv than performance car.

R+T did a comparison or Mark Donahue's old Trans-Am vs a new Camaro. They indicated that the new one was faster, but if you notice in the pictures they had the Trans-Am car fitted with old, hard Goodyear Blue Streaks. (You can tell they were hard by the way they had no "globbing" and the way the dirt was stuck to them.) An old Gen 1 Camaro can be lightened to 2800 lbs pretty easily. Put good shocks, low racing springs, swaybars in it and just 350HP in it and the new stuff cannot keep up. People forget that 700lbs difference is like adding 3 big guys as passengers. There is no way... These magazines are fun to read, but we know who pays their bills.
@moabman6803

I didn't really care for the article. Seems like they were on too little of a deadline throughout the testing. And honestly its not fare to have the race done on the track the new camaro had been driving and testing on for quite some time. Huge advantage for the new Camaro guy. But they probably knew that and set it up that way for advertising. The big corporate guys aren't dumb. Seems like they made a "set-up-to-win and hope no one notices type of scenario" it seems like to me.
