In some og the rivers, that would definitely be a good idea here in Norway as well - like in Gaula and Nidelva, where they catch a lot of really big salmon. In this particular river (Storelva) the fishing starts a mere 15 feet from the waterfall and only fly fishing is allowed.

Congratulations on catching such a stunning fish, and for being such a skillful fisherman! I love to catch and eat wild fish (I would rather not eat a farmed one). When I catch a very big fish, I usually eat it; I have eaten lots of salmon almost as big as this one. When fish of many (not all) species reach a certain size, they are so old that they are not going to live very much longer anyway. This is especially true of a large salmon running up the river from the sea; they are there to spawn and will then die straight away. I never have qualms about killing a fish, or any other game. If there are not many of them, I would not fish or hunt them. And a lot of released fish do end up dying shortly after anyway, due to being handled. In general, even though I love to fish, if I am not going to eat them, I will leave them alone. That has always been my policy; although I do sometimes release fish for various reasons.
@BushCampingTools
Жыл бұрын
That's my policy too. Unless I'm going to eat it I don't fish or hunt. I do both but only to eat and or tan skins and eat. Personally, I don't like catch and release because in reality many fish do die due to poor handling and or infections from hook wounds/breaks in scale covering and or excess removal of slime.

A gravid female fish, stuffed with thousands of eggs headed up river to spawn. In my experience big salmon don't taste near so fine as a grilse, and having eaten of a couple of big ones years ago I have never killed one. @@BushCampingTools that's not true. Research confirms that 90% of catch and release salmon return on their way to spawn. If you don't release them they have no chance at all. If most fish die after being released then how do coarse fisheries keep in business? Once the salmon are gone they are gone forever.
@BushCampingTools
Жыл бұрын
@@truthteller8567 Once a Salmon has spawned it dies, they do not return anywhere, (ok most not all but only about 10% will come back if they survive-although I am yet to find an independent scientific (university based study) reference to that "10%" figure) it is a one way trip but if one catches them on their way to spawning then they (dependent upon where and how far they are from spawning grounds) may never get there. I'd be interested (I'm a biologist) for some references about the catch and release for salmon. I don't doubt about fishing in enclosed systems, a completely different story, since the fish are not navigating anywhere via chemical queues etc. to spawning grounds A completely different environment.

Firstly beautiful fish. To those oh release the fish only anglers, next time you tie or buy a salmon fly ask what is it tied from, slaughtered birds and/or killed animals and then say save the fish, gets on my tits. I catch and release only cause were i live stocks are low. If numbers rise il make my decision then. Netters, trawlers etc etc were i live have our rivers destroyed not the angler. All rivers world wide have different stocks of salmon coming in from the sea. Well done from me.

You just killed your breeding stock You killed the goose that lays the golden egg. Beautiful creature and you just snuffed it out for the sake of a meal. They're much more use to me back in the river.

Shame, what an awesome specimen to allow to reproduce. Congratulations but you just made a big dent in the gene pool, at least it wasn’t a hen fish 😬!! The big ones aren’t trophies anymore, take a pic and let it go. If you want one for the table take a small one, it would do us all good!! #AtlanticSalmonFederation

The fish should be managed by a knowledgeable fish and game department. If it is legal to take, then take it if you want it. The salmon is probably in the river to spawn and die anyway. There are usually stations in Salmon territory that will collect the fish roe, if it is necessary to restock. You know nothing about nature, obviously.
@adamshaw247

@@gabell727 But it hasn’t had the chance to spawn though has it, which was my glaringly obvious point!! Less of the confrontation and pipe down, if it’s legal to take a fish and the fish stocks are healthy then take a lesser specimen. Why do you think fish over a certain size are returned in pretty much every river throughout Europe and Iceland where the fish stocks are very healthy and I do much of my fishing. I obviously know nothing about nature, you laughable human being. The more fish that are allowed to spawn the bigger them number of par produced ergo the bigger number of smolts produced to try and make it back out to sea, less than 10% return and that it declining all the time so it would be sensible to allow as many salmon to spawn as possible. Now back in your box and go annoy someone else.

It's a 'game' fish, Adam, not a coarse fish. They are called game fish for a reason. You want to torture fish for fun, and effectively be a coarse fisherman? That's up to you. Enough of this absurd Catch and Release virtue signaling. It is the drift net fishermen you need to whine at for damaging fish stocks....not salmon rod anglers, who have always been conservation minded long before the C&R virtue signaling arrived here from America.

Sorry but of course you are allowed to catch and release in Norway. You are strongly encouraged to do so. Like in any wild salmon water, like 99% of sport fishers do. Of course you can choose not to. Like you did. But please stop messing about

Remember your sport and what you enjoyed and your children will, cant keep taking and not put back, fishing is a amazing sport when you have that take whether a fly or spinner or bait, enjoy the fishing but dont be greedy like some fishermen, take for what you eat not to sell and make money , bad sportsmanship and this message is to all fishing men , enjoy your sport but releasing a salmon or a good fish should be the best part of your day when you have done your duty 👍👍👍

Why did you kill it? It's not as if you and your family really need to eat it! Conservation has to be the priority now right? I think it was ignorant and irresponsible for you to kill that fish.
