The Big South Fork National River & Recreation area has so many unique and scenic sights and on a recent backpack I saw even more of them. With Amy and friends Cindy Spangler and Bruce & Cathy Henschen, on May 30-31, 2024, we did an overnight that was both quite difficult but absolutely filled with outstanding sights, including waterfalls, cliff overhangs, arches, views, and an unknown “rock house.” Early on the backpack were Devils Den, a very dark overhanging cliff, Jake’s Falls, a good waterfall with recent rains, and a rock house in a strange place with stacked rocks enclosing one end of two huge rocks, with the builder(s) unknown. We camped at a beautiful plateau-top site, which even has a picnic table in the middle of otherwise wilderness, and nearby is the O&W Overlook that provides what some people say is the one of the best overlooks of the Big South Fork River. From that camp we did a day hike on a terrible trail much abused by horses to the highlight of the trip, the Eye of the Needle, sometimes called Hole in the Ridge. It’s one of the very top sights in the Big South Fork as a long cave makes a huge dark slash below and all the way through a rock spur of Hurricane Ridge, at least 150 feet. The cave is coated in darkness except for the “keyhole” on one side of the cave. For photographs of the backpack see this link: theskeltonview.smugmug.com/20...
