This was written by the writer of The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai (1984), supposedly as a sequel to that film. It did poorly at the box office so it was apparently rewritten. Oddly enough, this film was also not a hit. Like Banzai, this became a revered cult movie. Btw Buckaroo Banzai is another film like this.. a cult movie with a crazy good cast, crazy weird plot. Starring Peter Weller (Robocop), John Lithgow (Dexter, 3rd Rock from the Sun), Chris Lloyd (Back to the Future) and Jeff Goldblum (Jurassic Park).

@pinkyperky3506
3 жыл бұрын
That's not quite true. He kills the armoured soldier with his knife and is then pinned under him, he also kills some guys with his gun after forgetting to take the safety off first. He even remarks that its not the first time he has killed a guy (though is probably lying)
@RalphBednarski
3 жыл бұрын
@@pinkyperky3506 the Armoured guard has nothing in it(it's a reanimated suit of armour)...when Jack stabs it, it breaks the enchantment and is another foil for Jack to be detained(part of the on going gag-Jack getting tied up or knocked out while everyone else is fighting-he even missed the majority of the fight cause he was knocked out)....and Jack randomly "pray & spray" absolutely don't count. Basically, this is why Jack is the sidekick and not the hero.
@pinkyperky3506
3 жыл бұрын
@@RalphBednarski I agree that Jack is the sidekick and not the hero, I'm just pointing out that lo pan is not the first person jack kills in the movie. Shooting the guys dead with his gun absolutely does count as killing someone, even though it is played for laughs. He literally points his gun at them, pulls the triggers, realises the safety is on, then does it again this time killing them with the full intention of doing so and specifically references killing them immediately afterwards. "First time you ever plugged a guy?" "No....of course not!" As for the armour being reanimated , I'm not sure what you base that on or how a pocket knife would "break the curse". The armour would fall apart afterwards of that was the case, but he is pinned down by the weight of the person inside. Good chat, I love this movie!
@RalphBednarski
3 жыл бұрын
@@pinkyperky3506 They showed at one point, that the Armoured guard(s) were just suites of Armour standing against the wall and they were reanimated...as for the knife and all weapons were "blessed" by Eggchen before Jack and the guys drank the special drink/liquor and went into the elevator. Jack is a natural idiot and exaggerates stories to add to his ego...the only skill Jack has is fast reflexes(and they show this several times throughout the movie).

Carpenter writes or co-writes the music for most of his movies. He also wrote the famous Halloween theme himself. When asked about his film scores, he said he's not the best composer out there, but he is cheapest composer he knows. Synthwave and Darkwave fans (music styles inspired by late 70's, early 80's synth based film scores) keep Carpenter in high regard. Carpenter was also hired to make the music for PlayStation 1 game Sentinel Returns (sequel to a weird, surreal, Sci-Fi themed 3-D puzzle game "Sentinel"). I had that on PS (the original I played on C-64) and sometimes I would just put the disk on a CD player and listen to the level soundtrack, which was recorded on the disk as regular CD music tracks.

"How did they market this back in the 80's?" Poorly. Despite greenlighting the script pretty much as it was shot, the studio didn't really understand it. "The Thing" also bombed and wasn't really appreciated until like a decade later.

"That sound like a problem for the Ghostbusters!" Same VFX crew. This was their very next project. "What inspired John Carpenter to make this film?" The script was originally a Western. It was based on The Tong Wars, an actual bloody conflict between Chinese criminal organizations in San Francisco's Chinatown in the 1880's. The Cinemax/HBO show "Warrior" is set during these events. Jack Burton was originally a cowboy and the whole thing was about getting his horse back instead of his truck. Carpenter was inspired to make this movie after seeing the Hong Kong movie "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain" by Tsui Hark, which is even more gonzo crazypants than this movie. Tsui Hark was inspired to make Zu after seeing Star Wars. He hired some of the Star Wars VFX crew to make it.

Watch this movie at least once a year; definitely one of my favorite movies. It drives people nuts how much me and my buddy quote it.

Brother introduced me when I was like 12-15 or something. I showed it to my son (15) a couple weeks ago and he thought it was great!

There's a brilliant directors commentary to this film, just Kurt and John Carpenter. It's like listening to two old mates at the bar, real mutual love and respect. And self-deprecation!

Suzee Pai, the girl with green eyes, lived on my street when I was a kid. the early 80's. I used to play with her brothers. I have a vivid memory of seeing her walk down the street. Even as a little boy I was hypnotized.

You're right about the action sequence with the wing kong and chang sings at that funeral scene. One of the baddest fight scenes I've ever watched in my childhood. Brutal.

If you rewatch this, Jackie Chan is one of the extras during the funeral fight scene.He's one of the guys wearing white.

The pacing and editing is brilliant. saying an adjective to indicate an action. "FAST!" Saw this with the other luckiest SOB's inthe theater when I was 6! This movie works so well because it is a Western in essence, but told with an Eastern spin. Kurt Russells character was the Cowboy who rolls into town and doesnt leave until he gets his horse(truck) back. He even carries a Saddle bag over is shoulder.

I was a kid in the 80s when I first saw this film, and it's still a guilty-pleasure watch for me. It's corny, but fun. I'm also a fan of "The Golden Child" and "The Shadow."

The music for this movie was actually written and performed by John Carpenter's band, The Coupe Devilles. In fact, one of the band members is the actor he used to play Michael Myers in the Halloween movies.

I saw this film in the 80s, and it's one of my favorite movies! Yes, the old guy (Victor Wong) was in 3 Ninjas. He was also in "Tremors" AND in "Golden Child" but was not in Karate Kid.

That movie scared shit out of me when I watched it for the first time as a 3y.o. Wasn't able to sleep for a couple of nights, screamed at nights. Was definitely traumatizing for a kid like me. But now it's just a comedy... In between that movie and the Golden Child I would definitely prefer Golden Child. It's so much deeper and joyful at the same time, and no bad impression for me back then, except for the last fight with that demon :) .

For some reason, the timing of "Hollow?" "Hollow" "Fuck it." cracked all of us up at home when we watch this movie. I think it's Jack Burton's 'Bull-in-a-china-shop' approach to everything. The whole inside joke of Burton being an almost completely useless hero is what keeps us coming back to this movie. I was really impressed by Denis Dunn and expected to see much more of him in movies. I only remember him being in Carpenter's Prince of Darkness.
