I'll never forget driving across the country with big Walter and homesick James pulling the uHaul and sleeping in cheap hotels. Bradley P. Smith (bass) and I traveled as roommates. I was playing tenor sax. Rich Molina played guitar and ran the band. We had a blind drummer. Homesick traveled with one purple suit that he wore every night. Walter was mercurial, sometimes happy, often angry, usually drunk. I do think he was the giant of the blues harp. Little Walter was more of a jazz player. Big Walter was pure blues and had the greatest tone ever on the instrument.

Funny how perspective plays tricks - slim guy on a short-scale Gibson EB-0 bass, stocky guy playing a big old Gibson ES-5 jazz box, and because the slim guy is further back he almost looks like a kid playing a banjo!

The guitar is the same dimensions as an L-5 but it is actually an ES-5. It has three P-90 pickups and a laminated maple top and a different inlay on the headstock and a different tailpiece. T-Bone Walker played a blonde ES-5 from 1949 until it was stolen in Paris in 1968. It was recovered in Paris a few years ago, long after T-Bone died.

@@EricCirca That's a fascinating bit of history I didn't know - thanks for that!
