I think this is the correct episode where I heard that Rick had changed his guns over to red dots and they were holosun. I’m curious to which holosun model red dot he was using, I may have the name wrong. Thanks guys

Great podcast guys! The Nicolet Chequamegon National Forest covers more than 1.5 million acres. The Ottawa National Forest in the UP of Michigan is even larger. 🦌🦌

In Northern Wisconsin we've always worn wools and a wool jacket. Only an orange vest and hat is required. The Wolves starting repopulating up here since about 1990 and now are completely out of control. He's right when he said the age structure has changed and Deer numbers per square mile are a fraction of what it once was. Quite a shame, but if your willing to get on a big track you can still kill some slammers. For good snow you want to be in that Northern tier adjacent to Lake Superior.

The plaid and wool is still worn, but only by those that are older and traditional...unfortunately that generation is almost gone.

We did wake up to 2” of snow on the last day of the 9 day rifle season here in Wisconsin . Which was a blast to get out on and do a little tracking. Many years we never see any or very little snow during rifle season here. I think very few people have the tenacity to walk the distance and work through the grind that tracking requires. Breaking free of family hunting tradition can be difficult as well. We tend to hunt as our dads did. And it sometimes seems expected by our dads to do such. My hunting group thinks hunting together means everyone on the same 80 acres, to me hunting together means we are in the same 5 square miles. My stepfather grumbles about lack of deer sightings and wolves, etc. I am convinced that “He who walks the most, sees the most”, along with that brings shot opportunities. Thank you guys for all the inspiration and stories to help all of us get out there and enjoy the Big Woods.

Todd ain’t the only one who tracks deer. But, I no longer have a party to hunt with. My family who makes up my former hunting party hunt a 500 acre chunk of woods only. I’ve tried getting friends into my style of still hunting and tracking, but no interest that I’ve found. So now, I hunt by myself. Todd is 100% correct about wolves in MN. The DNR(Department of Natural Resources) in MN, I believe, misrepresent the wolf impact on whitetail populations.

Most “trackers” hunt alone as a rule! Occasionally a double team, but not often! I hunt 5 states in new England and most seasons hunt 5-6 weeks alone!

Maybe I didn’t explain well enough. Since I hunt over many 100s of miles. I camp by myself, and have no one to share in the success or failures of my hunts. Even my the friends I do have that hunt, they do t understand why I hunt t the way I do.

@@ryananderson3760 I’m telling you that you’re not alone. It’s a solo game. Hunt it yourself, drag it yourself! There is no more pure way to hunt! The hunt is yours and appreciate as such. A true tracker does it for the love of the outdoors and the challenge. I drove 4000 miles in November/december, hiked between 250-300 miles. Had company for 9 of those days! Next fall I will do it again!

Unfortunately northern Wisconsin has more wolves than deer. You can hunt blocks of timber and swamps that are literally 16 mile blocks and you may see zero deer tracks... but you may see a giant....once every 5yrs lol

Do you bait a hook 🪝 fishing ???? Or what’s different hunting over a corn 🌽 field or potato farm in southern Maine. Ps you will never shoot an old mature trophy 🏆 Deer over bait they only visit at night and need to get lucky that the deer slips up and comes In 5 minutes early. But it’s ok to bait bears ?? This dude made it sound like baiting started yesterday it’s been going on 40 plus years.

I had a lot of fun tracking in Sawyer county, WI back in the early 2000's. Had some of the most memorable hunts of my life. Connected with a couple smaller ones but the really big ones managed to give me the slip. The wolves naturally dispersed in from MN and MI and right about that time the wolf population skyrocketed. By the time I quit hunting up there I would see more wolf tracks than deer. That and my kids got old enough to hunt. Plus we rarely get snow for tracking during gun season anymore. I think wolves are an important part of the ecosystem but I really wish we would be able control the population.
