I used to own a Yak 18T - 9 cylinder radial engine. Oil always tended to accumulate in the lower cylinders, so it smoked a bit on startup. It’s quite an exciting event starting a big radial!

Rest assured, that is a problem inherent in all radial engines. Just the nature of the beast, unfortunately. Glad your yak 18T engine was working! Don't know how many of those are left.

3:00 Ever notice how every one of the radials took anywhere from 4 to about 10 tries to start? But the Allison and the RR/Merlin V-12s both fired right up. No problem.

Hydro lock is a major issue with the radials. Worst case scenario is having to pull plugs to drain the residual oil in the bottom cylinders. Just imagine that happening when the aircraft is needed. A major shit show.

@@jjojo2004 I think your comment is factually incorrect, based on the Mosquitos record: it excelled in photo-recon, bomber, night fighter, fighter-bomber, anti shipping (rocket and cannon armed), weather recon, post-bombing recon, secret VIP high-speed transport, path finder and target marking roles - the P-38 NEVER achieved this versatility or excellence in such roles. Btw the Mosquito holds the record of the lowest loss rate for any front line combat aircraft in WWII. Sorry Jordan, but the facts prove that the P-38 simply isn't in the same class as the Mosquito. 👍

@@jjojo2004 really.....please tell why ?. If it was so crap, why did Germany envy it so much ?, why did they try to produce their own version in the Focke-Wulf Ta-154 Moskito ??. Another fact you may not be aware of.....if a part of the airframe was damaged...it could simply be cut out, and replaced (depending where it was) !!. As said elsewhere, the Mossie was very versatile.

I agree with the comment, but in all fairness to the video, it does say that the P-38 was _one_ of the most successful designs, not _the_ most successful.

Why all the smoke? I'm going to guess it's the engine design whereby oil leaks into the cylinders past the valve seals when it sits idle for any length of time. Makes me wonder why it doesn't cause plug fouling. I've had motorcycles that burned less oil but fouled the plugs often causing a no start situation.
@sonnysmall6182
3 жыл бұрын
Good guess. Usually when a radial engine cools down the oil that gets trapped in the lower cylinders will leak by the rings and pool in the jugs combustion chamber. That's why most people drag the engine through a few rounds by hand to make sure the engine isn't hydrolocked. Sometimes the plugs do foul but they do have two plugs per cylinder and the ability to lean out the fuel air mixture to burn some fouling off in the runup.
