Important Notes About This Video: I talk about not being able to turn off the cabsim with the Origin Effects BassRig. That's not entirely accurate, and I should have clarified what I meant. You can turn off the cab sim, but only when the pedal is bypassed. So it's possible to get a completely clean DI signal (something I failed to do in the "clean" portion of the video) by switching the toggle to "FX" and bypassing the pedal. My basic point still stands though: It would be even more of a killer pedal if you could use the EQ and the rest of the pedal without the cabsim on. People have commented that you can turn it off on the 1/4 inch output, but then we're not talking about it being a DI. I'm sure this list of corrections will grow... I'll update as and when things come up.

I love my Aguilar Tonehammer and my Caveman BP1-C and for pure DIs you can’t go wrong with the Rupert Neve DI (RNDI) and the Khan VTDI (tube DI). Would love to try the Sushi Box and perhaps the Noble - but it’s hard to justify the price and waiting time. Loved the interviews! Thank you Janek!

A lot of his tones with the band were incredibly bland (the Tech 21 in the beginning for example, he didn't even have any blend to let the tube sound come through). I guess thats fine if you clicked on the vid to see exclusively a DI box and nothing more, but the demos in the band context its like he purposefully just showed how they sounded without letting any of the DI's character come through.

A masterful addition to the foundational archives. Not reamping a single cut through each pedal and actively responding to each DI individually speaks to your dedication. I recently watched Conrad's DI shootout and I think his higer gain settings on the Colourbox did a disservice. Finding a similar character profile in each DI is fair competition. Well done Janek.

Based on your previous excellent video recommendations I’m currently using the Caveman BP1 Compact, a Miura M2, HX Stomp, a BugCrusher, MXR mini Octaver and a Gojira Tremolo pedal. I actually use a JHS buffer rather than the EP Booster only because it was a steal. I was impressed with DG Microtubes X I wasn’t expecting it to be so clean. I had a Capo but I couldn’t be bothered with all the knobs. Had a U5 which was great but a pain to move around. I would definitely use Phil Mann’s Sushi Box Finally love the warmth. The MXR really is a great piece of engineering. I did some of my shootouts and it was actually very similar to the Sadowsky preamp. It has the exact same EQ points in the bass and treble, with the sweepable mids. It's very transparent and great for dialing in the sound as needed with all those features. It's perfect for my upright, and I use it tame the piezo pickup and give the extra output it needs. I often use both the XLR and 1/4" outs with great results.

JDI is a classic. I would point out the origin effects super vintage cab sim is only on the xlr out. You can use it without the cab sim using the 1/4” out. They also have the 64 black panel and dcx bass the cab sim is designed so you can run any other pre amp into the super vintages cab sim. Video got me curious about the JHS. I’ll might have to get one. I kind of wrote it off because in the few demos I saw with the bass it was dirty sounding in a way I didn’t care for.

I totally get that you can use it without the cab sim on the 1/4 inch output, and I should have made that distinction in the video, but since this is an XLR/DI specific video, that was the parameter I was judging it on. It’s really a head scratcher as to why you can’t turn it off on the XLR. It would take the unit to a while other level.

My take on high quality passive DIs with a passive bass is they're really great, maybe even the best, given one of two conditions. The advantage of a passive DI lies in its absolute simplicity, with absolutely minimal circuitry added to the signal chain. What makes for a truly great passive unit is simply the quality of the transformer, because there's nothing else being added to the signal chain. The wonderful simplicity of a passive DI brings with it one important limitation. That is that there's no audio transformer that will reflect a high 1M ohm impedance back to the pickup. The lower impedance that the pickup will see when connected straight into the transformer will load the its serial inductance such that the connection will be filtering out high frequencies to some degree. So that brings up the first condition in which that passive box may be the best choice; that is if the bass tone doesn't require those frequencies. For example, most of James Jamerson's Motown recordings were famously made with his P bass plugged straight into the board through a passive DI. Here's the second condition where a really good passive unit is the best choice; that is where the bass signal has already been buffered by circuitry ahead of the DI. That buffer could be simply the circuitry built into an active bass, or it could be any active circuit that's between the bass and the DI, whether that's in the form of a stand alone external buffer, preamp, pedals with active circuitry, or just the amp itself. In all those situations the input circuit of an active DI is redundant, and while that circuitry might not add any noticeable amount of noise, band limitation or distortion to the signal, it's an unneeded complication.

@janekgwizdala
4 ай бұрын
I'm going to do a shootout between the Noble and the HX stomp version of it soon on the channel, so you'll get a chance to hear that one at least. Besides that, they are just completely different animals. There's no substitute for the components, the tubes, the engineering... and the stomp doesn't have an XLR so it can't be considered a DI. For me the analogue pedal will almost always win out in the end, but I understand that price is an issue for people and the Stomp gets very close in a lot of cases.

It’s an almost impossible to task to ever just pick one thing and go with it when I do so many different things musically. The Colour Box feels like such a useful tool to bridge a lot of situations I find myself in, and most importantly gave me some options for my clean sound in a relatively “small” pedal. To me it’s the advantage of not just being a utility thing like the JDI or MXR, having so much control over EQ and saturation, and not being in the $1k+ price range with tubes I have to worry about on the road. The Simone was amazing. I will totally own one at some point to keep in the studio when I can justify the cost of adding such a unique piece to the setup.

1. All these products are extremely different, and with some products there’s an incredibly broad range of results (Coulor Box etc). DI vs a Pre + EQ + DI. To compare one recording of each is helpful but simplistic, so take all shootouts on YT with a grain of salt. 2. Just because some players don’t hear a difference doesn’t mean there isn’t a difference. Personal taste is the most important thing: pick the tool that works for your sound. Everything is subjective: if you love the least expensive option and it works for you great! I often use inexpensive gear, in fact try to. But to claim the choice of pre/DI doesn’t matter and you can buy anything is ridiculous. Imo. Honestly when it comes to the bass frequencies and the highest highs, expensive gear unfortunately can have a very positive effect. 3. Another thing to keep in mind: are you a hobbyist or a professional? Pretty much anything will sound acceptable these days! Perfectly fine for people who aren’t releasing recordings to purchase only inexpensive gear. It’s when you get into making a recording that could be listened to in 200 years that it becomes a better idea to invest in the best possible tools. But you will pay sometimes an additional 100% or more in addition, for maybe only an additional 10-20% increase in tone quality. If this isn’t worth it for you, buy the solid budget option! 4. I love the Colourbox on not just bass… also guitar and keys. It’s so great for getting your sonic character how you like it. Beck’s touring band all have one, for good reason.

@@janekgwizdalaWe just have different views on what fundamental bass is. Usually those parts are much lower down the neck.

Radial JDI consistently sounds among the best to me.

The Origin effect, you can turn of the cab sim when the pedal is not engaged. It's de switch on the lower left corner. PLus if you use the signal from the "amp out" instead of the DI Out, there is no cab simulation applied to that one.

I just pinned a comment addressing this at the top of the comments section. I should have been clearer in the video. My main issue was that you can't actually use the pedal's features without the cabsim engaged. And if you do use the 1/4 inch out, it's not an XLR/DI situation anymore, and isn't applicable for this video.

The DI that stood out for me was the JHS Color box. It had a certain character that just was different in the mix. Maybe it was because you were most happy with it tho. Owning the Classic Sansamp, the Aguilar and a radial DI. Love them for different reasons! :) Anyway, thanks for the shootout. Helped a lot. :)

I bought the Colour Box v2 a year ago because it’s an amazing shaper for any sound, not just bass. I love it. I’m glad i invested in it, i put it on keyboards, guitar, anything. I’m not surprised that most members of Beck’s touring band have one.

To my ears the Reddi and JDI were the best sounding... Which suggests the bass itself (in your hands at least) is already awesome sounding!

Initial impression: Sushi Box Finally had the best tube sound, and I am partial to the Caveman, it's on my own board 😁

The VT-Bass by Tech21 has the B-15 sound too. That’s what the character knob is all about: B-15 tot SVT. And..., you can turn the cab sim on and of too.

Standouts for me were; Capo, Reddi, Darkglass in that order. There were two that I really did not like, but no need to call them out here.

Epic work! Thanks Janek 🤘 I listened to this driving home so couldn't see the pedals. I totally agree with you that they all sound great, you cannot go wrong. I liked the sansamp distorted tone the most so would go with that for me🤘😃👍😎

Thanks, man. You have put a lot of effort for this, I appreciate it. Was looking into DIs and preamps for some time now, this is extremely helpful. Great idea to have input of other professionals, gives a good view on what is needed where and why, really great job you have made.
