I remember reading a theory years back stating that Japan was rapidly accelerating the use of internet and computers for the rising economy. As digital information bloomed in usage through Japan's fast Internet speeds, many bloggers and conspiracy theorists started dumping as much information and disinformation quickly to establish forums and chatrooms. The theory I read claimed that Kojima was aware of how much trash and nonsense flooding the Internet as it does now filled with half-truths and echo chambers. Instead of passing on valuable information or literature or art into the next generation, every moron now gets to spam the Internet and pass along to junk that doesn't deteriorate or become forgotten. Kojima must have seen pre-2000 era forums and chatrooms and scoped out the emerging digital landfill that GW was created for.

I played MGS2 in a very unique fashion: Compliance. When Raiden saw Snake turn on the elevator at the beginning of the Plant chapter: "That can't be Snake. He's dead. I have to take this observation and investigate further." When Raiden met Pliskin: "He shares his voice and appearance, but I still can't confirm anything. He seems to be on my side. I'll proceed accordingly." When Stillman proclaimed that Pliskin wasn't a SEAL: "Who is he to declare this? He's just a cop and bomb specialist. I'm just FOXHOUND. We can't say for sure." When Snake admits who he is: "Oh. Okay. Fair enough." When Ocelot kills the President and Raiden aims at him: "There must be some good reason Raiden's not pulling the trigger. Oh well." [the most embarassing one] When Campbell tells me to turn off the game: "Okay." [turn off] [turn back on] [load save] "Wait... that didn't work? I did what I was told!" I missed a lot of the minutiae by doing this, but a few years later, my reflections upon the whole experience had a delayed yet VERY dramatic impact. It made me question how much else of my life I had spent taking everyone's words - lies and truths and all between - for granted. How much had I been made the fool? How much might I still be made the fool? What do I change (and how) to secure myself against this manipulation in the future? This, and Snake himself, is what/who woke me up to reality and the victory of choosing one's own path, one's own end, one's own legacy. At 13-14 years old, Solid Snake - warrior poet that he is - came around and stayed around just in time to save my life in a way that's nigh impossible to fully explain.

A core theme of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty was trust into the digital age, or how it can easily be betrayed and why we should take things with a grain of salt as we seek out something to pass on to future generations. Strategically going out of their way to hide Raiden, the actual main character for most of the game, in the marketing and then springing him on us once we get to the Plant, actually subliminally prepared people for the inevitable post-modern head trip and shocking reveals that by the game's end, blows the scope of the Metal Gear universe wide open and revealed so much about the world and its rulers (The Patriots' AIs). I think it's for THIS reason why Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, its immediate successor, became regarded as the best Metal Gear by misaimed fans: Although Metal Gear Solid 1 was clearly a dark political thriller in a semi-cyberpunk setting with a traumatised lead who was rightfully cynical and downtrodden for most of the duration (Solid Snake), a very vocal chunk of people back then viewed it as pure power fantasy where you beat the bad guys, get the girl, and prevent armageddon. So when Kojima aimed Solid 2 to be a post-modern critique aimed squarely at that minority... What would you think happen? OF COURSE they'd declare Raiden as the antichrist and latch on to the more safe, lighter 1960s espionage-inspired prequel game and ignore its themes entirely!

But isn't "La-li-lu-le-lo" even more conspicuous? Especially if (Like Snake) you figure out that anyone who says that has been conditioned to be unable to say it? Even to the point that they don't KNOW that they're saying it? Cause I'm pretty sure when Meryl said it in 4, she's saying it as if "The Patriots" is in her mind, coming out of her mouth.

Amazing analysis! Another theme tragically overlooked when thinking about this series is the GENERATIONAL GAP! How do you recapture your original fan base, reel in new players, love them all...but know in your heart that their relative perspectives and time with the series is disjointed? Answer: be fully transparent and make the Snake/Raiden dynamic confusing. Sure, Snake and Raiden are both part of the same quilt but cut from different cloth. So their story arcs aren't supposed to line up perfectly. Kojima knew this and ran with that idea flawlessly

Not only did it piss me off as a kid that MGS2 was mainly from the perspective of Raiden, but then Hideo Trolljima and Konami announce MGS2: Substance, which once again tricks us into thinking we're going to get to play an entire game from Snake's perspective. I went and bought substance the day it came out, basically ran home from school and played the tanker mission so quickly. Just as the plant mission was loading I thought this is it, this is the moment we get to play as Snake..... no wait its Raiden again Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

This is a really great video. The recent batch of video games with purposefully misleading marketing (Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity) had me thinking back to MGS2, and ruminating on why its misleading marketing has been posthumously accepted as an artistic strongpoint, whereas these previous two games still generate a lot of controversy. And I think you are exactly right, in that it is because the sleight of hand was done to empower and consolidate the themes of the narrative. Looking back to forum posts around the time of MGS2's release, we can see that there certainly were legions of fans who were upset with the change, but as we look back on it, and realize that this "annoying blonde kid" we were forced to play as was a literal player insert, it just reads as a masterstroke. I think FF7R clumsily tries something similar and may eventually be looked back on in a somewhat similar way as MGS2, whereas with Age of Calamity it felt like the misleading was simply for the sake of a plot twist, and thus will never feel earned in the same way, no matter how much hindsight we have. Sorry for the long comment, but it was a very thought-provoking video!
@mrdanrennie
Жыл бұрын
In a similar vein, people have mentioned TLOU2 as an example of purposefully misleading marketing- but I don’t think last of us 2 mislead people for artistic reasons, but it was avoiding a huge spoiler to the games narrative. Remakes like FF7 have an additional layer of baked in expectations. If you start as a “shot for shot” remake you could do a lot of creative narrative things if executed well

Making the player feel what protagonist feel is what are the first steps of making a masterpiece, immersive experience. Recently, games that does this well are Kane and Lynch 2 and EDF4(with a different style). K&L2 is actually its objective to make the 2 players feel what the protagonists go through. There is digetic music, proper music is only heard through stereos. What you feel is undescribable. EDF4(and EDF2017) manages with a very subtle style. Through getting stronger each mission, you experience how the war goes on through radio talk. But the most important aspect of making it immersive is the collection of the mission design and allies barter. Each mission has an introduction to a certain enemy, others have a combination that are deadly when with each other and so on. However, the final 10 missions(online mode) are designed to tire you. They take you lot more to complete and you get surrounded almost every time. Pure joy on these games when designed to connect the player with the protagonist. Even Jade empire manages it in some aspects.

Honestly? Konami and Kojima should've been sued for false advertising. I remember the fake screenshots showing Snake in the latter half of the game. I cannot put into words how disappointed I was when I found out that wasn't in the final game. It honestly killed the franchise for me. I played the hell out of the NES version of Metal Gear and Snake's Revenge. Metal Gear Solid 1 is one of my favorite PS1 games. But MGS 2 not only felt like a betrayal, but it also went from feeling like an 80's action film to being overly goofy. And the series just got goofier from there. I like the VR missions in the Substance version, but other than that, I can't stand the game. Never bothered playing 3, 4, or 5. Because this game ruined the series. The only reason I ever owned a copy of 4 is because it came with my PS3. ...I promptly sold it. I don't have time for 4hr long cutscenes between 2 minutes of gameplay.

Yeah well that's pathetic lmao; all of it; melodramatic, and very up-your-own-ass about it too- if you don't understand or appreciate art, don't comment on it. You've gotten all your opinons from second hand back handed comments meant by people who never would have liked these games anyway.

I played this game in the late 2000s, and I have to admit, I never really liked it as much as the other games. Although, I think I was too young to really get what was going on at the time. I think I'll replay this when it gets remastered soon.
