I personally choose the uni for my undergrad from how I felt when I visited. The vibe, the accommodations, the environment are as important as the quality of the course. It’s helpful and gets me through tough times. I’ve been really comfortable with being myself, not having to worry about my racial and gender identity all the time.

If you are thinking about starting your grad program at a different university, try your best to check if the campus of the university has a good environment for graduate students. I just looked at the research interest of the potential supervisor (who is my current supervisor) and the reputation but didn't look at anything else. The happiness of getting accepted was only momentarily. The environment in the campus building where I do my PhD now is so bad that so many experiments and other valuable works couldn't be done properly: so many power outages (once a month at least), temperature control failure (many of the samples were melted), unnecessary construction that blocks the entire plan of the building for two years which force some of the grad students to move to somewhere else, and not enough space for grad students in the lab that we can't even find the place to put our backpacks often, so many old equipments that need to be replaced but being delayed to be done without any reason, so on... The worse thing is that the univ seems to care less and it even made the profs and staff normalize all these issues. It was hard for me to know about all these before my PhD program since I'm an international student and I couldn't really travel to visit and the students in the lab at that time only tried to talk about nice things when I emailed them to ask how the grad program was. But, try your best to see the campus is a good environment. Visit the campus and the labs if you can and keep asking the current members from the lab that you are interested in how good or bad the grad program is.

I was pretty concerned about this for a while because my undergrad uni was a top one in the country with the prestige blah blah but didn’t have the phd program I wanted. But now I realise I much prefer my PhD uni because the educational environment is less suffocating/toxic/elitist so you can actually be creative in your ideas and I don’t regret at all, not to mention my PhD program is specifically tailored for my future career plans as well. So i guess i learnt prestige isn’t everything On a side note, Andy have you done videos on PhD activities such as poster presentations etc? Would love to have a basic breakdown on those sort of things for my PhD

If you go to a truly good school for undergrad, almost any program will be Top 10 or 20. There are no wrong moves. If you don't get in right out of HS, go to Comm College, transfer in and get a scholarship/grant.

My Bachelor's university was picked based on lifestyle. However, in the last millennium, all UK universities had a good reputation so that was less of an issue. The education explosion has changed that situation

what is the education explosion?

It is very helpful listening to you for about a year now. Would you talk about doing a Ph.D. in an American seminary (Luther Seminary, MN, USA)? I appreciate your advice!

Hey Andy, another great vid and they're very informative especially because I'm not in the process of applying to PhD. I heard people many people say, when it comes to PhD, school reputation doesn't matter as much and it's all about who your supervisor is and how standout his/her research is. After giving it a thought I somehow think this is a paradox - outstanding academics only go to reputable universities since they offer more resources and broader connections. What do you think?

Outstanding academics go wherever they can get a job, and there aren't many jobs in academia. It's possible to get a strong research reputation by just bringing in lots of Chinese/Indian students and ruthlessly exploiting them, yet such a place probably isn't where you would want to study.

I have been following your channel, which has help me get accepted into a PhD program! If I may request a topic, I would like your take on finding your research interest(s). For myself it is bit a of struggle, as I have interdisciplinary background, plus I do not want to make myself too niche.

No PhD billionaire in my country yet so if I managed IVY I'd be first and only. As for where people end up I seem to end up around the same self employed gig entrepreneurs etc there's only bullshit jobs anyways no good jobs ever even call

In the US, a university/college in the top 100 qualifies as reputable. Probably even top 200 is still good. Think about it: 100 out of 3000 colleges/universities is still in the top 3%.

My undergrad was selected on the degree on offer and the convenience. Although great, it wasn't flexible for full-time workers, and there was no faculty interest in the areas I was researching at the time. Oddly now they are pumping out PhDs working on my earlier interests. I had never really considered getting work in the field of my degree, it was simply a life long interest, but from first year I was getting asked to join projects, and supervise fieldwork...

Hi Andy, thanks for the video. Been struggling to choose a country/uni for Phd. This helps me a lot!

Another big reason or determining factor... cost/tuition!! This applies for most of us here in the United States :)

I have chosen my current university for a master's degree mainly because of the flexible study and considerable scholarship they have offered and my ambition to join academia. I wonder what you would say about the online learning mode.

That is a great opportunity if you are genuinely interested in being innovative. Bad place for coasting through though!
