Warranties on ANY electronics (not just phones mentioned here). When the sales staff kept pushing a warranty on me I responded "Do you believe this product is well made? If it's good quality and people give it a good rating, why should I want to buy a warranty? Do you not have faith in what you sell?" They're left speechless.😂😂
@exidy-yt

Muze, to be fair, 95% of electronics sales staff agree 100% with you and wouldn't ever push that crap on you except for one problem. Their hours, their pay, bonuses, even their very JOB are often tied to selling extended warranties by most electronics stores. It's one of the most disgraceful tactics of electronics retailers for growing the bottom line: the warranties are around 90% pure profit. Less then 1 in 50 extended warranty owners will make a claim, and a high percentage of those are rejected anyway. It's the easiest gravy trains in all of retail, so next time don't take it out on the poor schlub trying to sell you on it, and commiserate with them instead. I can guarentee he/she hates trying to sell it as you do being sold it.

Sometimes it's not about the overall quality of the product but the clumsiness of the buyer. My wife tends to drop her phone a lot. But the real answer is to be more careful instead of wasting money on warranties.

I agree with you to an extent. if you can research the warranty service. If its Square trade and what you are buying is under $200 do it. spend $10 and in 6 months call them say your item is damaged. Diamonds are scam that everybody knows are a scam, but ignores it anyway. Diamonds are not rare. Instead, their supply is heavily controlled. Debeers had the monopoly and controlled the diamonds. They started the whole scam advertisement campaign to make diamond rings part of the marriage process. Back in those days, divorce was kind of rare. What better way to sell high priced useless shit to people who won't ever try to resale them and find out how worthless they really are? They paid celebs to wear diamonds and everything else. People fell for it. Diamond rings and marriage has been solidified ever since. As of about 6 years ago or so, Debeers no longer has the monopoly on diamonds. The market now controls prices, but people are still controlled by the bullshit idea that diamonds are rare and are actually worth lots of money. It will slowly end with time. Takes a long time to do away with stupid useless traditions.

Having worked in retail for a few years, be careful of the word "sale". It is a very powerful word that gets nearly anyone to pay for things they wouldn't have gotten otherwise. Favorite example, strawberries don't last long. First week, they were $1 per container, second week, they started getting juice everywhere etc. so we marked up the price to $2, and did a half off sale...Same price, strawberries most normally would've passed over. We still sold out despite the fact I had to clean the register after each sale.

A couple of helpful considerations: I purchased a reverse osmosis system for home and I've been refilling the same bottles from a cheap case of bottled water I bought a year ago. I re-wash the bottles (an inconvenience but necessary) and just keep refilling with very pure water. For my disposable razor - I bought a Harry's brand razor at Walmart (around $9 I think) and I use a spray bottle with rubbing alcohol to clean the blades. This cleans off the junk that reduces the blade effectiveness and cuts down on rust, etc. If you take the razor and run it in the opposite direction on your skin (reverse of normal stroke you use to cut the hair) this helps to hone the blades and restore the sharpness. I've been using a good disposable razor for weeks now. I don't recommend a cheap, cheap disposable razor but one that's constructed a little better so it holds up. Harry's provides two heads in their starter pack and I still haven't used the second one yet. The water is very healthy and tastes great. The razor does the job. Hope this helps. A reverse osmosis system does use 2 gallons of water for every gallon it produces but when you actually drink the stuff I think healthy water is worth the cost.

Some major ripoffs: Insurance premiums, doctor's bills, hospital bills, epi pens, and medical tests. The formula to calculate what insurance companies charge for premiums (what they need to charge to not go belly up) does *not* take in to consideration the $ that they have in banks & they operate at huge profits & even get premium hikes approved while still rolling in profits. Insurance regulators are not allowed to include figures for the bank $ when approving or denying requests to raise premiums. Your premiums can go up because other people in your state filed claims. Doctors will charge hundreds of $ to look at a chart- even one that never actually sees or speaks with you. Sometimes if a doctor says "Hi" to you in a hospital, they charge you for it. Then there are fees for handing you medicine. Or fees for the nurses holding a baby before handing it to the mother. Charges for being handed a tissue. etc. They will also try to sneak in charges for things you didn't get-- like saying they gave you more meds than they really did. If you go to an ER at night and they make you stay until after midnight, they can charge you for 2 days- even if you got there at 11:55PM. The prices are also arbitrary & inconsistent.

#14 is incorrect. As an Engineer All cables are not created equal. Shielding is different and hence the suseptability to noise and crosstalk. EMI, EMC Static discharge all can cause issues. Now Standard use cables for home use, for the most part this is correct but, there are many commercial and industrial uses in which you definately need a higher quality, better shielded cable or it severly affects performance. The main thing about gold plated cables...Gold is not suseptable to oxidation. Only outdoor cables will need someway to keep the connections from corroding. Indoor equipment generally is not exposed to the elements and unless you have a "rats nest" of cables on your system where lots of crosstalk between wires can happen, you don't need the high end cable on your inhome systems.

As you can tell from my pic, I'm a musician and I've been doing it for 35 years since I was 15. One thing to watch for is the price of guitars. Especially young/new players or their parents buying that first guitar. This requires a little knowledge and can't be expected of everybody, so do some research and DON'T be tempted to go by brand name alone. There was a time when that might have meant something, but these days you can get a quality instrument by looking into the "lower tier" of certain brands. Fender offers a line called Squire, and for God's sake don't spend $2000 on a Gibson when Epiphone makes damn fine Les Pauls. In the case of Epiphone, they aren't a cheaper subsidiary of Gibson, but another company with the legal rights to produce the Les Paul. Don't buy anything sight unseen no matter how good it looks online, unless you are experienced and familiar with companies, models and generally know what to expect. Go to a music shop and play around with the ones you're thinking of getting. Know what kind of music you're going to play and ask questions. You don't want to buy a Telecaster if you're in a metal band. If you are in a metal or rock band, Ibanez makes very affordable guitars of great quality. Just don't be tempted to spend unreal amounts of money just for a name.

Watch out for quick oil change businesses. Several years ago, I bought a used 4WD 4Runner. Went to a convenient oil change service to have them check my 3 drive case oil levels. They said the gear oil needed changing. cost about $220. I stood in front my SUV while the guy in the pit was “changing” my oils. I couldn’t believe what I thought I saw: the tech just removed the top plugs from the gear cases and topped up the oil. The manager stopped eating his lunch, came out, and made me get out of the service area. I had the job inspected by the Toyota dealership and the mechanic gave me a report that said that the oils had not been changed and also they seldom need changing at my mileage. After a long argument with the district manager, he refunded my money. The outlet closed a year later.

That's true of the Red Cross and a lot of the big ones. But I believe Samaritan's Purse, founded and run by the son of the late Billy Graham, puts virtually 100% of your donations to the cause you donated for, unless they have to use some of it for travel to the disaster areas, but I believe that they are all volunteers and might even pay their own transportation, but I wouldn't begrudge them that particular concession. But I know only about 10% of Red Cross donations go to the cause, and the CEO rakes in over a million dollars a year. So when there's a disaster like an earthquake in Haiti or a fire or some large scale cataclysmic event, I give to Samaritan's Purse.

Legally speaking there are ONLY two differences between a company and a "non profit". As the name implies obviously charities are really not reporting a profit but the lesser known fact is that there are no share holders either. That's it so that is why CEO, COO, etc etc can legally make so much money out of these. As long as it reported as an expense (salary, pay etc etc etc) then your very well could just be mostly supporting those people lifestyles than the causes you were intending to support in the first place.

On the topic of saving money on razor blades, you can make razor blades last *much* longer by using rubbing alcohol after use. You can either leave the blade in a container with rubbing alcohol when not in use, or just give it a quick alcohol rinse. This sanitizes it by keeping bacteria from forming on the blade (reducing razor burn), and the alcohol displaces any water on the blade, keeping it from oxidizing. This keeps the blade sharp much longer, as the main reason razor blades go dull is from oxidization on the edge. If the blade has one of those moisture strips on it, the alcohol will pretty much destroy that strip, but that's OK because if you're using shaving cream and the blade is sharp (which it will be) you don't need that moisture strip anyway.
@playlistiphone8743

I agree that in general, razor blades are over-priced but they don't deserve to be on the list because he makes it sound like all razor blades are created equal and that's just completely false. Everyone's skin reacts different to certain blades and it's no coincidence that the more expensive seem to cooperate with most people's needs. It's more of a health thing than a price thing.

Or you could look into a safety razor -- like an adjustable Parker 'Variant' or Rockwell 6C for around $50-$60 (but consider this as a lifetime investment) -- though you could get an 'Assured Double-Edge Safety Razor with 5 Blades' for $1 at Dollar Tree (but don't base the shaving experience on this cheap safety razor). The Parker and Rockwell adjustable safety razors will provide a mild to moderately aggressive shave, based on your experience or needs. One huge benefit of this is razor blade costs: you can get 100 Astra 'Superior Platinum', 'Voskhod', Gillette 'Silver Blue' or 'Nacet', Polsilver 'Super Iridium' or Feather 'Hi-Stainless' razor blades for $10-$30 on eBay that will easily last a year (and most likely more, but this depends upon how frequently you shave and/or need to replace the blade). Many shaving soap, shaving brush, aftershave and other options available (in a wide variety of prices) that will provide better shaving results and experience. Plus, (if you find a need) you can easily shave off a beard with one -- /watch?v=JB4GislfVgw I can make additional suggestions, if you wish.

Well paid media content in any form is almost pure rip-off. Cable internet is at least preferable to DSL; unfortunately most users get only a tiny fraction of the speeds such a coaxial cable could potentially carry. Fiber internet is pretty much just higher tiered service on a different conductor just for the sake of marketing; there _are_ advantages, but most of the speed increase seen by consumers is just because their provider is throttling them less than providers of other internet service types. There is not yet _nearly_ enough backhaul capacity to accommodate all users getting high speed up & downlink at the same time. Same story with 3G\4G\5G cellular: 3G mobile devices have enough _potential_ speed to support almost any typical broadband usage; It's the access points & backbones which get overcrowded.

Funerals are among the worst ripoffs there are and among the most expensive. The industry is increasingly owned by only a few mega companies, regardless of the name or the "local owner" advertising. They literally write the actual laws and regulations that keep them and their interests the only "go to " solution for handling your departed loved ones , and setting the prices . They won't let you do it yourself in most states ...some "good" reasons perhaps.... but even these are questionable. They will let corporations pollute the water and air , but don't you dare bury a corpse either on your own property or any where for that matter because of potential for water pollution. It's all designed by these companies with the assistance of bought off politicians that will have you spending mucho dinero for something people used to do for themselves. Now not everyone can or would want to do this but wouldn't it be nice to have a choice? As for me , I tell 'em to just throw me into a dumpster with the other garbage and save being ripped off !!

I will only accept sky burial, where my corpse is consumed by carrion eaters. It's the only ecologically sound way to go. Unfortunately for Zoroastrians, white-tailed vultures are endangered nearly to extinction, due in large part to organ failure resulting from the consumption of cattle treated with medications the birds cannot tolerate. Fortunately, for me, any buzzard will do. It takes a huge amount of energy to incinerate a human body, and the resulting waste is not great either. Embalming is a particularly harmful process, ecologically speaking. Burial is almost totally impractical as population density increases. Sky burial (putting the body on an elevated platform where only carrion eaters can reach it) is totally the way to go.

Well, there are more additives in Premium gas as well. There IS a difference other than octane. I have worked in the industry, so I know that's a fact. Also, I have done real world testing. One example being my sisters old car when it was a year old developed loud lifters/valves. One tank of premium gas with the extra detergents cleaned off the gunk and the engine was silent again. Other than for certain engines though, it really is not needed. Other than the rare cases like my sister that must have gotten shitty gas from somewhere that cause the ticking.
@pietrayday9915
5 жыл бұрын
I did used to buy premium gas regularly, but the gas station next door had one day a week that they lowered the price to the same as their "plus" grade gas, which cost only a few cents more than the regular gas, so I decided, "why not?" and chose that one day a week as my regular day of the week to fill-'er-up. I'm lucky enough to have gotten a home-office job since then; as a single recluse with a work-at-home job, I just don't drive enough anymore to bother with even the once-a-week fill-up with expensive gas, and just top everything off with regular once a month or so anymore, and really, I've noticed absolutely no difference in my car's performance, gas mileage, or anything else.

And, like it or not, the stuff you 're stealing from work ultimately comes out of your paycheck, one way or another, anyway - you can bet your employers aren't looking at theft and waste and trying to think of ways to cut their own salaries to pay for it.... If you're going to outsource your printing, why not take it to a local office/print shop (in the U.S., places like Office Depot, Kinkos, Staples, etc.) and pay them to print it for you? Sure, it costs more than freeloading off your workplace, school, church, or mom and dad or whatever, but it's still cheaper than buying a printer and ink cartridges, and you're helping to support a local business. If you have some philosophical issue against paying the evil capitalists your local office/print shop, there's also the option in many places of printing it at your local public library, which will probably charge you a nominal fee for the service to cover their costs of ink, paper, and wear-and-tear and maintenance on the printer, with a little left over to keep the library running in a world where public libraries and paper books are struggling to survive in a cellular world where your weird local paper-book-thing-building has become eccentric relic of the dimly-remembered pre-internet past.

Sometimes. In some cities a community pays part of that money to the police dept to have an officer report TO THE COMMUNITY instead of HQ downtown, and the officer's main duties are TO THAT community mostly. A guy in a suburb of Houston who had observed and stopped a suspicious guy in a panel van a few months earlier ended up preventing the death of a kidnapped 6 year old girl by a paedo who had killed all his previous victims. The info he had enabled the other officers to have an address to go to in a couple of hours instead of finding her body days later. That officer would not have been in that neighborhood where he saw the guy earlier were it not for the HOA paying the department to have him there. The community on the other side of the highway has lower HOA fees, higher crime, and no officer assigned. And yes, the area is too big for that officer to effectively cover both communities, even though the officer tries.

I used to work at a movie theatre and the price for popcorn was always sky high. I felt guilty serving it knowing it was so overpriced. People would buy it anyway. They would sometimes even complain about the price and for a while I would feel sorry for them. Later on I stopped feeling that way because they should have known movie theatre food was going to be expensive. Just rent a movie and make your own popcorn.
@playlistiphone8743

There is a good reason why concessions are sky high at the theater because the profits in the ticket price share are not big enough to sustain the business operation. And yes, everyone should know by now that it's expensive to buy popcorn and all the other goodies. But one thing is for sure, the movie-going experience is not going anywhere. You can not enjoy a movie the same way on your tv at home the way you can on a giant screen in the theater along with much better sound. So for at least the new releases that you want to see, it's movie theaters all the way!

I wouldn't necessarily call movie popcorn a rip-off. There is no deception or manipulation going on like you find with electronics warranties and funeral services. I will take exception to the "Starbucks" segment. We own a coffee shop - we have to charge $2.50 for a cup of coffee that costs us a nickel to brew. Why? To serve piping hot coffee, we have to brew often, which means dumping a fair amount down the drain. We also have to pay for utilities, rent, employees, cups, lids, etc. Believe me, no mom-and-pop coffee shop is making anyone rich. You're basically paying for convenience.

Hi Mike! While generic medication have the exact same active ingredient, they sometimes fail to use quality inert ingredients - the " fillers" that give the medication enough bulk to be shaped into a pill or fill a capsule. This can sometimes lead to problems with bioavailability - or how well the medication can be absorbed by the body. Just thought you should know that! I love y'alls lists!
@AdleisioCefnforDolphin
5 жыл бұрын
The only issue with this is that, when things do go generic they have to be tested for efficacy, especially for anything that is prescription only. Now, some people do have more sensitivities to generics, but it is extremely rare. And you also have some doctors that will write things as a DAW1 because of their own biases, but for all intents and purposes generic medications have to tested for equivalence and shown to be just as effective. Also a lot of the time the company that makes the brand also makes the generic. And example of this is Cialis which just went generic, the brand and generic medication look identical, except for the imprint that is stamped into the tablet. Also I work in a pharmacy.
@DFX2KX
5 жыл бұрын
@@AdleisioCefnforDolphin I've had one generic that didn't agree with me. But when the pharmacy changed to a different provider of the same med? It was fine. Though I've noticed some generics have pills that seem to use the nastiest bitter filler as of late (like two different store-brand asprins and one of my BP meds) but even those work fine.
@AdleisioCefnforDolphin
5 жыл бұрын
And that does happen, I have had it happen with Levothyroxine, but it could easily just be that the fillers themselves caused a bad reaction, not the medication, but i have definitely had people who are allergic to certain fillers. Also it seems that certain medications are more likely to need specific manufactures for certain people, more common medications like Aspirin will work regardless, but i have people's whose metabolisms are so sensitive that they cannot get their meds from a mail order pharmacy, because of the temperature fluctuations it goes through, and again, Levothyroxine is one of these and that is because it is a medication that will bind to everything and not be absorbed. But for all intents and purposes, drugs have to be tested for equivalent effectiveness.

Bottled water - Mike, you do realize that most people buy it for convenience, don't you? The biggest problem is that when the plastic bottles get too hot (too hot is no hotter than about the temperature of your average hot water dishwashing sink), the plastic molecules leech into the water (and those bottles aren't shipped in cooled trucks or kept in cooled warehouses) - and when ingested (by drinking the water IN the bottles), they bind to the estrogen receptors in the human body. That is silly, of course, but many of the computer scams, IRS collector scams, and other scare scams and threats DO come from India, So. America, and Africa. But those scammers are at the bottom of the pay barrel, they do what they are told and get a very small cut of the profit. American criminals often scam about IRS forms and payment (the IRS NEVER calls on the phone, they send notices). Today, it seems no one has a conscience about what they do, many will do anything for money. Easy money, they think, but they are part of a crime! Also, if you think because you have caller ID that you can report their number or call them back, you're wrong, because they use "spoofing" techniques to hide their number. It's terrible today, how many criminals there are out there, hacking and persuading you to let go of your hard-earned money! RESEARCH for yourself, learn from authentic resources (check out the resource) and don't be "taken" by all the fraud that is out there today!

Scammers in America will go the tax fraud route, because they know a little about audits and tax fines, but the IRS will NEVER call or e-mail you, they send all notices through the U.S. Mail ONLY. I disagree with the lottery ticket. I used to feel the same way, but someone is going to win - and that someone will not be you if you don't enter. The key is to not buy more than one ticket. And if $100 a YEAR for a weekly ticket will break you, then you need to get a real job.

Not a scam? When the WAshington lottery started, one of the guys at work got people together to buy a block of tickets, just like the stores do. They needed just one more guy. A block was $400.00, so they needed a tenth person to chip in forty. He pointed out the Lottery GUARANTEED 180 winners in a block. We got the tickets. We scratched the tickets. We got 180 winners. All were $1.00 each. That meant, using the winnings from the first round, we could buy the $400.00 block of tickets for $220.00. We did. We got our tickets back and had...........180 winners. Again, all $1.00 each. All those decades ago, that told me most of what I needed to know about the lottery. For example, the "house" knows, exactly, how many winners there will be and what their pay out will be. They know they will make a fortune, and pay out a fraction of it. They know the only "chance" in the game is, which one of the who's buying tickets will get the preestablished wins.
@SurfsideRick
5 жыл бұрын
@@kellyvcraig Kelly..of course the owners of the game knows (or should know) how to make money. It's like a church raffle: everyone buys a chance to win a prize and the church keeps the rest for profit. Not sure I understand your point that such a practice is a "scam." Did you see the 60 Minutes report on the group of people that found the flaw in the lottery and made millions until the lottery folks changed the rules? Who got "scammed" in that case? The particular game you played may have been scammy (pay a $1 and win another $1 and the game keeps the balance) but you and your friends bought, even after being told that there would be 180 "winners" (which it sounds like there was).

I found this to be the case at multiple stores with multiple manufactures. I contacted the stores and manufactures but got no reply. I guess they assume that people won't notice or take the time to do the math.

Many of these are obvious, but for instance, if you have a real job and need to shave, you'll have to put up with razor blades. If you get to stay home all day, don't have a phone, don't travel, don't eat, etc., you can avoid most ot these. And of course, whatever you do, don't die. For example, people join gyms to meet people. College is a racket if you aren't on a scholarship anyway, and many professors require you buy the book to pass the class, he may even get a cut. Americans are obsessed with both credit ratings and identity issues, which happens far less than thought. Select a printer brand based on sources of cheaper refill or generic ink, some have more than others.
